  • See this stunning rare 1949 Packard Custom 8 Limousine sold by Sunset Classics: www.sunsetclass...
It is reported that fewer than 50 of these sleek Packard limousines were manufactured. These custom limousines were only built for special customers and Harry Truman is said to have had one of these eloquent automobiles.
This beauty of a classic Packard limo for sale from Sunset Classics is number 2250-2005 which means it was the fifth limo built, and by one Packard aficionado it is the earliest known Custom Eight Limo. Cars number 2250-2001 and 2250-2002 were sent to the White House for Presidential motor cars. As a mater of fact, late in 1949 five more 2250 limos went to White House service so this may have been one of them!
Enjoy the many photos and videos we have of this fine classic at the link above.
Thanks for looking and enjoy the show!

The limousines, 8 passenger sedans without division window & hearses bodies were built by Henny Body Company. They built the long wheel base & commercial models for Packard thru 1954. This is a Custom Super 8 and it had a 356 cubic inch displacement motor with 9 main bearings. The engine on this car sounds like it has some valve tappet noise. The one I had was dead quiet when it was running and if you walked up to the car, you could barely hear it at idle. Mine had a 3 speed manual with overdrive and at 75 mph it was just getting it's legs!! Had it up to 110 once and it was quite a thrill!! It had more to go but I lost my courage running biased tires! ALso, this is a 22nd series 1949 model. Packard didn't really go by model years like the rest of the industry but by series. They came out with a 23rd series in mid 1949 which looked the same as the 23rd series of 1950. Magnificent cars!!

The low volume, long wheelbase Packards, as you say went to Henny. Starting in 1941, Packard outsourced most of its bodies to Briggs Manufacturing Company, which was bought by Chrysler in 1953. In 1954 they leased the former Briggs factory on Conner Ave from Chrysler to build the 1954-1956 Packards. The 1957 and 1958 Packards were just rebadged Studebakers built in South Bend.

I'm amazed at how short is the gap between panels. Just this detail can give us an idea how high the quality of this car it is, and we're talking about a 1940s car!!

Elegant cars Packards are. But this particular series, most especially the limos, were derided as "pregnant elephants," or "upside down bathtubs." They did tack a lot of extra tin on in the name of style change. The best Packards, imo, were the sleek envelope bodies of 1951-1954.

  • @rick0e295

First family car I remember is a 1950 Nash AMBASSADOR so similar in appearance to this Packard. Recall the Nashs called upside down bath tubs and Packards called pregnant elephants! TRUE but both were fine automobiles with slick surface styling well ahead of its time. George Mason (head of Nash) saw problems ahead for independents in the early 50s and proposed that he would buy Hudson and James Nance (head of Packard) would buy Studebaker. They would then merge into one company with Studebaker Hudson, Nash, and Packard covering all levels. Plan worked to a point. Nance and Mason each bought respective targets, but Mason died, and Romney took over with no interest in going further. Over at Packard , acquisition of Studebaker was problematic 😐. Curtis Wright took over. Soon gave Packard a sad death and sent Studebaker to Canada where it had a short but decent run with the Lark. AMC still survives with Jeep and Dodge Ram, but not much else. There you have it! BUT what if Mason's plans had been completed 🤔?

Sad that the company capable of building a high performance V12 aviation engine, the Packard Merlin that powered thousands of P-51 Mustang's, and whose own V12 designed engines powered WW2 PT boats, was insolvent barely a decade after the war, and even the co. with which it reluctantly merged, Studebaker, was gone by the mid 1960's.

According to my sources, a limousine wasn't offered in the '49 model line - only a 4-dr sedan and 2-dr convertible. If this is a sedan, it is still pretty rare - only 810 were made. Are there jump seats behind the front seats?

    • @dlwatib

Your sources are obviously wrong. This car is definitely a limousine. The divider glass is what defines it as a limo.

It was rare indeed even when new. Packard didn't keep production records of limos built but only 160 custom chassis were built for 1949 and that also included ambulances and hearses (the vast majority were built in 1948)
