@@starcloud4959 it has nothing to do with pc. Bravery is a dangerous action one undertakes for a greater good or desperately needed result, say running into a burning building to save a child. The individual in question is aware of the extreme danger but does it anyway because of a vital result. Stupid is doing the same thing for a wholly selfish or superficial goal while simeltaneously knowing the massive risk involved and choosing not to respect that risk or educate themselves upon it fully. So unless they did this as some sort of life saving action, their idiots.

Now I'm pretty certain the only reason this guy survived is because he was horizontal in the water. Had he been vertical he would have been deep enough for the current to drag him under.

That's not how it works. There isn't some magical current that pulls people straight down. The hazard is falling in and being swept laterally under a ledge and remaining pinned there due to the current. The Strid's danger is a bit overstated.

Whitewater kayaks float because the sprayskirt around the cockpit keeps out water, as soon as you swim the boat fills up with water and loses almost all buoyancy. Kayakers keep inflatable float bags in the stern of the boat for this reason. When someone swims along an eddyline it's super common to see their boat do exactly what it did in the video. There is nothing unique about the Strid that's causing that and you can see exact the same thing happen at your local class III run if you wait for someone to swim.
The Strid is certainly much more dangerous than it looks, but it is certainly not the most dangerous stretch of river that people have kayaked. It is not even close to the most dangerous stretch of river people regularly kayak (that's probably the Stikine).

I have a huge respect for similar natural waters after that experience. It may look fine, but it has huge energy and once you are out of the boat for any reason, it wont let you leave and just drain all energy from you, until you can't continue and drown. I was there, got rescued 5 minutes before 12. You are pretty much dead if there is no immediate help or you have extreme luck. Stay away from this.

Yep! You can ignore this info dump if you want or already know this- im just excited to share information ive learned XD
The upper part of the river where they were originally at is just regular old river wharfe- but lower down where they crashed is called the bolton strid! Its actually quite flooded over in this video- which personally I believe is the reason their lives werent taken that day. The huge river up stream all funnels down into this canyon, "the bolton strid", basiclaly causing the whole river to turn on its side. The water there is EXTREMELY airated, causing people to be less boyant in the water. On top of that, the water is calm on top, while a extremely strong current is right underneith. Because of this if you are submerged vertically in the water, your feet are being pulled faster and stronger than your upperbody is, dragging you under the water. You cant really see it in this video, but underneith all those rocks they are standing on are tons of caves carved out by the water- the rocks they are on are just ledges of a few feet of rock between them and the water! Many people have drowned here.
Personally, i think the main reason they survived this is because they were more-so parallel with the surface of the water when they fell in so they didnt touch both fast and slow currents. On top of that, because it was flooded over, the water they were touching was flowing over the rocks instead of between cliffs of rocks, so the current sucking you downwards isnt as strong.

There are several jack knives and turns in there too small for a boat to just be barrelling through as they were. The flooded nature of the water too was definitely over those cliffs with the carved out parts from extreme rapids. That being said, you all obviously know what you're doing, and its silly for me to even say everything I just did, as if any of you guys who paddled it weren't fully aware of the risks and potential consequences. Amazing reaction time and rescue guys, seriously. I know I am coming off like I'm giving you guys shit for trying that, but im way more in awe of what I just watched, seeing you guys pull off one of the quickest, yet effective rescues ive ever seen. I literally have goosebumps all over arms from when I realized he was about to swim for sure after that flip. This is actually one of the more incredible pieces of kayaking footage I've seen, even though it isn't anywhere near as violent or dramatic as some other swims posted. But this was by FAR the most danger I've ever seen a kayaker in, and including the time Mike Roy knocked himself out and spent 3 and a half minutes under water before being revived by CPR in that decision... You are super lucky. First off, Water moving at 6 mph moves with about the equivalent force of category 1 hurricane winds (74 - 95 mph) .Imagine how fast the water was flowing through the strip at the time you were recording. Secondly, The top layer of water also churns, aerating the water and making you drastically less buoyant. So you would first be twisting through a mixture of air and water, then be dragged through the water in circles and circles until you drowned. Thirdly, if you had capsized, you would of been dragged deeper due to the strong gradient of flow velocity (shear) from the bottom of the river to the top, and no mater how strong you are, you will not be able to escape that. The only potentially successful way of escaping would be to attach somebody to a thick rope and Have a large haul them out of the water, because at 3 feet under the current isn't flowing at just 6 mph, more in the range of 30-50mph which is similar in force as an EF-5 tornado. In conclusion, a very stupid thing to do, however it also gives us insights about the flow patterns through the river.
