Fragments of lines "..his trews of navy cotton..." and "...through the starch and bleach and buttons...": A song about a loss in WWI (or WWII), remembered years later? Astonishing craft, achingly beautiful.
i have to be careful to not listen to this whilst on the bus or at work . it really does bring tears . good ones . reminds me of my mum , and the stories she told me of her first boyfriend. such a beautiful song. please dont ever stop writing stuff like this Ms polwart. your so ace.
I am truly in awe at the natural beauty of Karine Polwarts voice. She has one of the most lovely voices I have heard, and then she also is extremely talented in her song writing. What a talent she is. And what a fitting setting for her beautiful song.
Saw Karine again in Stirling last night. It is the first time I have seen her with Steven and Inge and hopefully won't be the last. They performed most of the songs form Traces and brought them to life with a performance stunning in its quality and beauty. It is undoubtedly one of the finest exhibitions of contemporary folk music I have ever seen. Go see them together while you have the chance.
Still makes me greet...my dad was from New Winton and this brings back childhood memories of visiting my grandparents. Looking forward to seeing in concert.
I couldn't agree with you more.I only discovered her very recently but was instantly hooked and had to get all her albums. She is such a beautiful soul and I adore her accent and singing.Such a good songwriter too.I find her songs so moving and cathartic. Can't wait to see her live in October.
@@sparkypeter Good for you my friend.I think you'll find it's money well spent.I don't believe she's made a bad album but This Earthly Spell and Laws Of Motion are her best ones in my opinion. You should try to catch her live too.She is just spellbinding and Steven and Inge are quite special too.
This song touches me in so many levels. The voice, the melody, the storytelling and painting of places and landscapes. Just Beautiful! Being from west coast of Norway, I can feel some kind of connection to it all.
Absolutely!I can't wait to see her live in October. I'm sorry to say I've only just discovered Karine but was an instant convert. She is an amazing talent.Such a gifted songwriter and what a voice! I fail to see how anybody could not be moved by her.
It's the morning after the US election. I am saddened at the results while it seems we've won there appears to be so many others still believing ... I needed to hear something that was loving and hopeful. I remember driving around Salters Road and Fala Dam a couple of years ago. I wanted to go back this past summer and could not ... .
My attempt at writing out the lyics: She was waiting for a boy In her corduroy breeches Driving on a Clydesdale like her father once had done From muttonhall to preston hall Through all the dales and ditches And an avenue of burly beach that reached towards the sun For miles and miles and miles she rode Down Salters Road to follow Damon all the way home For miles and miles and miles she rode She was waiting for a boy In his trews of navy cotton Something she had half forgotten is as clear as water now The horseman's only daughter takes the Friday boat to Bergen And the waves swell like a barley field that's ready to lay down For miles and miles and miles she rode Down Salters Road to follow Damon all the way home For miles and miles and miles she rode Down the spine of the St Lawrence To Kirkwall's stony shore The old north wind gathers her into its arms once more She was waiting for a boy He came skipping down to greet her Through the starch and bleach and buttons he was singing out her name The evening clouds are huddled in so close that you could catch them Granite sheen upon the river and the shivering of rain For miles and miles and miles she rode Down Salters Road to follow Damon all the way home For miles and miles and miles she rode Down windy manes and whippy law and all the way home All the way home - There's a few things I couldn't quite get (Muttonhall; windy manes and whippy law?), so please correct me if I got them wrong!
Lovely to hear this again Karine - thank you.
Karine speaks of an elderly lady who knew the name of every field and back track.
So much of our folk memory is passing away into oblivion.
Such a beautiful song, always gets me

Just gorgeous and great to see the area where the song is set too!
I know all of those places. It's amazing to hear someone singing about places I love in East Lothian and the Lammermuirs. Beautiful playing too.
A beautiful setting for a lovely song.

This lassie is pure class!!!
Not being a native of the language, and less of the landscape, how can I treasure this song so much? 💗
How incredibly touching, the stand out track on Traces for me.
First time I have heard this. Just beautiful. Thank you.
The dislike button should be disabled for all of Karine's performances. She doesn't deserve a single one.Her talent speaks for itself.I love this lady.
Heard this first at Ropetackle, loved it then love it now!

Seeing her perform is a rare treat, whether solo or with her wonderful trio !

Love your music and found the introduction very interesting as I live not so far away :-)
Lovely
Love it, and the chording as well...
Lovely voice!!
Why does it make me want to weep
Gotta love her accent.
She's as good as the young Joni Mitchell, and I didn't think that was possible.
Utterly agree !
Ditto! Maybe Kanye West can help her. (I’m kidding, of course!)
Thought the same!
this is a great song referring to the 'pans and salters road - nice
My attempt at writing out the lyics:
She was waiting for a boy
In her corduroy breeches
Driving on a Clydesdale like her father once had done
From muttonhall to preston hall
Through all the dales and ditches
And an avenue of burly beach that reached towards the sun
For miles and miles and miles she rode
Down Salters Road to follow Damon all the way home
For miles and miles and miles she rode
She was waiting for a boy
In his trews of navy cotton
Something she had half forgotten is as clear as water now
The horseman's only daughter takes the Friday boat to Bergen
And the waves swell like a barley field that's ready to lay down
For miles and miles and miles she rode
Down Salters Road to follow Damon all the way home
For miles and miles and miles she rode
Down the spine of the St Lawrence
To Kirkwall's stony shore
The old north wind gathers her into its arms once more
She was waiting for a boy
He came skipping down to greet her
Through the starch and bleach and buttons he was singing out her name
The evening clouds are huddled in so close that you could catch them
Granite sheen upon the river and the shivering of rain
For miles and miles and miles she rode
Down Salters Road to follow Damon all the way home
For miles and miles and miles she rode
Down windy manes and whippy law and all the way home
All the way home
