I live in Nijmegen. Usually summer is around 25 degrees celsius with peak periods that can reach till 30/35 degrees. The heat record we have in this city was in 2019 with 40,4 degrees celsius. Usually if the temperature is nearing 30 degrees the event might get in danger. But it also depend on the humidity levels, cloudynes, sunbrightnes etc.
1400-1600 where 5 degrees hotter then today, 1700-1850 colder , they call it the little ice age, after that 1909 till today there is a 1,1 degrees increase.. we can all find it in official documents. KNMI is from 1909 till today, if you are good at history you will know that we have had many ice ages and many times when its is hotter... the netherlands/belgium even england ones have had peaches growing in the nature, you need a lot of heat for that ;) we always think in deceniums or centauries... think bigger. our weather ones was hotter and then doggerland still existed. but i gues you dont know about doggerland or ice agers etc.
@MoreAussieTash Nijmegen is in the east of the country and more inland (actually less than 10km from the German border. I cycle to Germany to do groceries 🤣). It's one of the hottest places in the country. If you go to the west part of the country, the coastal part, it's usually 5 to 10 degrees colder. And there's much more wind, which also makes it feel colder.

Nice that you are back, it is 4 days of walking 30 / 40 / and 50 kilometers the walkers come from all over the world and also many military groups also people come from all over the world to see it and experience it there are 7 days before the festivities throughout Nijmegen and in the center there are 40 stages with music drinks and fun a big party is made of it. I come from Nijmegen myself but now live in the UK in all the places where the 4 day walkers pass through it is a big party with food drinks and music from 4 o'clock in the morning to encourage the runners it is a big party great atmosphere for the runners and for the visitors who come to watch.
Temperatures above 30 degrees used to be exceptional, but the last years we have whole weeks with these temperatures popping up in the summer months, especially inland. If these coincide with the "Vierdaagse", that's not a good thing.
maybe its me but i remember many hot summers in the 80's, 90's and 2000's so its not exceptional, when people get older they think the weather is hotter but as a child you dont mind the heat.
@@randolf84 I do remember those summers as well, but the temperature seldom reached the 30 degrees. Mostly they stuck to 20 to 25 degrees. My body has always had trouble dealing with high temperatures, not just now I'm older. When I went for my bicycle rides I used to come back with white legs from the salt. I wish it was only my perception.
@@randolf84 As a child in the 90's we definitely had summer days peaking up to 30/34 degrees (although the average was 20/25 degrees). But we for sure didn't had days of 35+. And especially not 40.4 degrees we had in 2019.
@@randolf84I talked about summer temperatures with my 90 year old father. He remembers in his youth schools were closed when summer temperatures reached 25 degrees because it was considered too hot.... 30 plus is normal nowadays.
Not only IN Nijmegen, but mainly they are walking in different areas around Nijmegen. It starts the 3rd Tuesday of July. I wonder which video you have seen @aussieTash?
Usually without realizing it, after completing the feat, the participant in the 4 Days receives a real royally recognized decoration, which can be worn on the uniform by Dutch soldiers. The 4 Day Cross is therefore also one of the official Dutch awards.
It's you! You're back! And I live in Nijmegen! There are FREE concerts all week. Also, why does she say it's 'usually' from Tuesday to Friday? I ALWAYS is. Yeah, that Summer was unusual. My brothers (2) walked it this year.
The temperature in the Netherlands is pretty mild normally, as we've got a sea climate & Europe is warmed by the Gulfstream which comes from the Mexican Gulf. The coldest temperature was 27,4C & the hottest 40,7C. And as we've got that sea climate, that isn't a "dry heat." The problem is that thanks to climate change those extremes get more extreme, so for instance of the ten hottest days 9 were in since 2002, only one from 1944. And as the 4Days is in July, that means there might be a problem. 6 people have died thanks to heat strokes etc. Walking is an activity that isn't just done during this march, it's simply the most famous one. Most children will walk the Avondvierdaagse, the evening four days, 5, 10 or even 15 kilometres an evening. On the opposite end is the Elfstedentocht, the Eleven Cities Tour. When it freezes us Dutchies get excited for ijspret, ice fun & we might catch Elfstedenkoorts, eleven cities fever, the hope that THIS year will be the year that the tour will go on. The ice needs to be thick enough on the whole 200 km route for it to hold everybody & it hasn't been held since 1997... Anyway, AFAIK "only" 3 people died during this event, so the heat is more dangerous than the cold. A video about the Elfstedentocht: th-cam.com/video/BvAPvjSSLH8/w-d-xo.html Another weather phenomenon is wind, which we've got A LOT of in the Netherlands. And bicycles.
