Im japanese and im not really good at english but she did it completely fine! Im not at all offended and she look great with the make up. I dont think she needs to do it 100% complete because its just a cheap tutorial.
Love how people are calling it cultural appropriation As an Asian if love to see a foreigner appreciate my culture And plus she lives in Japan Knows the language very well And even learns about the history I really don't know why People hate seeing others learn about someone else's culture She's lucky to be even living in Japan Since I'm an Asian American I would love to travel or even live in another country other than the U.S.
kaia harrison rac·ism ˈrāˌsizəm/Submit noun the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior. I'm Japanese and I don't find this racist. She enjoys Asian culture and that's okay; although the makeup wasn't the best. It's weird how people who aren't Japanese or Asian are calling this racist, but I'm not offended?
Chikah You don't speak for all Japanese people tho! You don't speak for all Asian's either. I know plenty who think she's racist and are constantly offended by her. Her tag's on Tumblr aren't pretty. People want her off TH-cam and they have a good enough reason.
I'm Japanese and I don't mind her dedication to learning Japanese history/language/culture, in fact it's really admirable, but it's a bit much when she has tutorials on how to *be* something of a culture that is not hers, or how to look Korean or Japanese. Living in Japan, having the ultimate "kawaii" persona, and being fluent in the language doesn't change your ethnicity. I dont see the problem with her trying the look from a professional for experience and appreciation, but I don't think she has the authority to make a tutorial about it, especially since there are a few elements that are wrong or insulting or she forgot altogether. If she had an authoritative guide to help her and it was actually correct, I wouldn't have as much of a problem with it.
How everybody freaks out because she didn't do it 100% correctly or didn't explain everything in detail, holy shit don't you have something better to do than complaining about such ridiculous things not respecting the japanese culture blablabla SHE IS JUST A GIRL WHO DID A MAKE UP TUTORIAL FOR A GEISHA MAKE UP NOTHING ELSE! A MAKE UP TUTORIAL!!! (to all the haters, sorry if I made grammatical mistakes english is not my first language)
김진주 The problem is 1. At 0:34 she's standing in a tokonoma. Its strictly forbidden to stand in one in Japanese culture because it's supposed to hold traditional artwork to be appreciated. 2. She swings around swords like no one's business when geisha/geiko are not supposed to be doing anything like that? It's okay to do a makeup tutorial but to claim to be doing accurate makeup and being in japan while doing these things are not right.
So many people make mistakes which are considered as rude in many countries and still nobody complains, because they are foreigners they don't know the culture and traditions and even if they studied the language and everything for years they still make some mistakes. If this borders you, you should search for every youtube video in which were made mistakes in cultural or traditional things and complain about it Have fun doing so
Technically this is Maiko (apprentice Geisha) makeup. Full fledge Geisha do not wear the iconic makeup that is usually shown. They wear much less. Also Maiko only put lipstick on the bottom lip.
Sigyn Clintottir actually, only first year Maiko wear lipstick on the bottom lip only; senior maiko actually can, and you'll see a lot of them wearing lipstick on both lips; I thought id just correct that little mistake ^^
i dont understand the hate about the video, she doesnt represent a real geisha, she just shows how to cosplay as one and its awesome with a sword, why not? its her version of her cosplay
I feel just heartbroken for her. People, before you hate, please understand that 1. Her mom probably made her make most of these videos. 2. She is young. 3. She is not doing that to offend anybody. She is just doing as her mum told her, and she is just being herself. Is that wrong? I think not.
+Jasmine Isnotadalek Also is incredible how outraged some people are...It has been almost year since she made this and I don't see the Japanese culture affected by this short TH-cam video. LOL
This isn't cultural appropriation people. Did you guys get this riled up over the Matryoshka doll video? No. Because it's a makeup tutorial for a costume. Any person with half a brain would be able to figure that out. She's not a geisha herself, nor a maiko, nor pretending to be either professionally. She is simply doing a makeup tutorial. Calm your ish people.
***** I am not "white". I have European blood but by over three quarters I'm Native North American Kay? Why would you assume that I'm white anyway? That's a tad racist, do you mean to imply that because my username is French that I must be white? Which, btw, is not even my name. It is the name a character from an American produced video game. saya kawaii (vocaloid saya) "Fucking weaboo trip" says the weaboo to the person with minimal interest in either Japan or anime. Seriously. You expect me to take you seriously when your name is "saya kawaii"?! The Matryoshka doll is a cultural symbol of Russia. Not on the same level as a Geisha or a Maiko, but it is a cultural symbol And, no, this is not cultural appropriation. While, yes both Maiko and Geisha are important parts of Japanese herataige and culture, they are also professions. Just like a nurse, a fireman, a policeman, a member of a military. If you want to get all defensive think about this; Beauty and the beast was written in 18th Century France. But when someone dresses up as "Belle" or "Beauty" that's not cultural appropriation, it's a costume. Here's another example; Senators (i.e Ancient Romans) are from a different time period and culture. If someone were to wear a toga, no one would call it cultural appropriation because it isn't. It's wearing a costume that happens to represent a profession. It is not her, or anyone wearing a costume, saying that they are part of one culture or another. Or that they accurately represent said profession/culture. It is a person wearing a costume. And here is a definition (coutesy Wiki) for anyone still stupid enough to think that this is cultural appropriation; Cultural appropriation is the adoption of elements of one culture by members of a different cultural group, especially if the adoption is of an oppressed people's cultural elements by members of the dominant culture.[
fuck you. you said Japanese people were not being offended, and here I am. I am a japanese person and I say ITS RACIST, and you as a Westerner should not be involved in this.
What about the neck? Just though u might do it because you love japanese culture and geisha makeup is not only about the face. It is cute, but i was kinda sad u didnt do the neck or tell anything about it. If..you know what i mean?
They paint theyr face and neck all white, but behind the neck they leave this W mark without the white makeup, it's the only place they show any skin. It has this sensual meaning, u can find the details on google.
If you want to talk about a REAL Geisha, you could say that they were slaves. Young girls were given to an elder Geisha, who took care of them (to say lightly). The mother Geisha would auction their virginity for money. That is not respectable. But, I do respect it as history. Just know what you're liking.
+Dallas Wise You have mistaken geisha for oiran, although they look similiar, geisha do not auction off their virginity, they are not prostitute. They are skilled entertainer.
It's not racist, a lot of beauty gurus out there had tried Geisha Make Up tutorial, it actually helps to spread about Geisha itself :) Anyway, I think her voice is much more normal now, greattt!!
The make up is fine but you got a few things wrong. The blush on your eye is too much and should be much more softer. Your eyebrows and too thick and uneven (maybe look at some how to geisha vid before you try this again) and you missed the make up down your neck. Its an okay job and your white base is pretty good. 6/10 You still look very cute regardless Venus but you can do better than this.
kai kirito Exactly and well put. I do shironuri make up often with my coordinates so as far as the base goes it is fine but missing the neck is a huge eye sore and a bad western costume take on how it is done. Venus is a role model and should make sure to do this this as close as possible not half arsed (not an insult to her though I am a fan). Just because it is on a budget does not mean it can not look correct.
Samantha Cheng Even non professionals can do better than this. Again I am a fan, I have no problem with venus but a true YTr takes good con crit well and Venus takes con crit very well
SmashGames75 Real mature kid. This is someone who clearly does not know the meaning of "Again I am a fan, I have no problem with venus but a true YTr takes good con crit well and Venus takes con crit very well
She studied the entire japanes history and language she even knows the meaning behind every makeup layer she applied So she isn't disrespecting japan at all People here are probably just jealous of her beauty and are trying desperately to find a little small reason to hate her and cover up their stupid jealousy
+Alina Song I didn't find this video offensive, I found it interesting, plus she is inspired by Japanese culture. She is married to a Japanese guy too.
She claims to know so much about the culture, but doesn't know a geisha wouldn't be caught dead with a sword! They were meant to be companions, things of beauty, not violent!
Sometimes people dance with swords to entertain. In the description it says they entertained. I don't know if they do this in Japan but I do know that swords aren't just for slaughtering.
They mostly danced with fans or decorative umbrellas.Swords were supposed to be things of honor, and back then women were not supposed to have them.Do you think it would be entertaining if someone dishonored you?
Normally I roll my eyes at what people deem as cultural appropriation, because most of the time it's cultural exchange and they are just being overly sensitive, but THIS, this is bad. Geishas are sacred to Japanese culture and is NOT a costume, it would be as if I were to make a OOTD with a Native American warbonnet. There's a difference with just teaching us popular Japanese makeup trends or liking j-fashion with treating Geisha like a halloween costume. it's really cringy and embarrassing. If you like Japanese culture, you wouldn't think this is ok.
***** there are places doing photos that dress you and prepare your make up as a geisha m. or even one of the children ones that is popular i think even though geisha are beautiful i prefer a geisha house or one of there owned photography studios or even be a retired one to do the make-up and colors properly. though i don't think she treated it as a costume i think many just don't know that...well sometimes these videos not said correctly or done with the right colors can be very upsetting to anyone of the descant or grew up around this
datumzinememories Yes I know about those houses that dress you up as a geisha, but they are normally run by retired geishas or people who actually help real geishas get ready. It is very respectful, but Venus is simply not qualified to be teaching these methods, there were many mistakes in her "Geisha" tutorial. It's completely butchering the geisha culture, thus cultural appropriation.
I honestly don't think it's horrible- there are some mistakes and inaccuracies but in the end she's not wearing a skimpy 'sexy geisha' outfit or putting on huge eyelashes and pretending to be a 'dolly' geisha..
Kei Fujioka true true, but whether you personally think it's a bad thing or not, it still falls under the category of cultural appropriation. Whether that is something you care about is your own opinion. I mean, it's not malicious, Venus isn't like. purposely trying to offend anyone, but it is ignorant and inappropriate nonetheless.
I like how she is trying to help people in the world of TH-cam but I absolutely hate how you haters out there are turning strait up bully's and how you are shooting down her creativity and I wish that you would just knock it off if you don't have something nice to post or say don't say it or post it at all ! You would not like it if someone said it to you. Keep your thoughts that are straight up rude to your self. Also if you say you don't like the video why do you bother to write a comment your wasting your time. Go watch something you will like. Stay strong people who are being bullied stay prositive and keep your head up.you are beautiful Venus as always
***** It's right in general. I think constructive criticism is very important. But some comments here weren't constructive criticsism, they were just really mean. o.o
Woot! Trivia time! Maiko -- essentially have the bottom lips partially painted, with the top lips left untouched. Their telltale mark is that pinkish "blush" on their face (speaking of which, you might want to take it easy on the eye makeup). Fully-fledged geisha have fully-painted lips and often lose the "blush" altogether. Likewise with the red eye makeup (which eventually thins the longer she has stayed in profession). Geishas barely have a soft hairline, as their white base covers it to the borders. Sometimes, they wear more natural makeup instead of the usual white, with painted prongs at the back of their necks resembling a serpent's tongue. Swords -- hmm, it's quite strange to see a geisha carrying a sword around. I've read that samurai wives go as far as carrying a kaiken with them - a shorter version of the tanto, which is hardly the length of a full sword (these are made for defense). As entertainers, either they carry fans or umbrellas.
You are standing in the tokonoma at the beginning of this video. For someone who claims to know a lot about Japanese culture, that is a very disrespectful thing to do :(
I think she stood on it on purpose, because tokonomas are typically used to display art, in the beginning of the video she said geishas are truly a work of art so i think she meant to do it in that way
the funny things in here, anything what Venus do = always wrong. get a life people. it's just tutorial anyway... she just learning how to do it. its her hobby, you can do it too... yeah.. if you want. if you don't, then shut up. it's like you showing yourself as "haters".
in reality, no one can say 'how to be' a geisha. takes years of hard work, dedication, and practice. you must be able to make it to maiko first. and even that is hard. playing in makeup and saying you look like geisha is ignorant and disrespectful to all the hard working Japanese women who took years to earn the title geisha. how to try to look like one would have been a better title. i hate how you treat my culture so light when you really know nothing. real issues and struggles going on every day in my country. but you only focus on stereotypes and all things kawaii, like this is truly what we are about. leave my country alone. stick to being swiss.
I get it, she offended your culture. But I'm sure that was not her intention. I'm very sorry that you got offended in the process, but you could have said it nicer instead of coming off as harsh as you did
OR0R0 no, i wasn't offended at all. i just felt like with all the negativity she gets already she didn't need more of it. but i understand why you're so angry. have to consider that she didn't know though
I totally understand that if this is your culture, you may be slightly offended over some discrepancies in this video, as being Hawaiian myself, my people are very particular to our culture. Although, I have a feeling the majority of people getting offended and talking about cultural appropriation are just whiny SJWs who don't really know anything about the culture and haven't lived it...IMHO
All the comments talking about the offended comments but I’m here trying to look for them, everyone so far loves and is enjoying the video how they like the makeup and all
Girl, don't pay attention to all those people that says that you are stealing a culture an all that. I'm a japanese and i really love seeing people from other countries apreciating my culture, even being a Geisha is something serious, but you don't really have to be a geisha to wear the dress or the white paint and the flowers, in Japan it's really common to see girls dressed like geisha even we are not. I mean i go out dressed like a geisha, except that i don't have the Erikae (( white necklace that geisha wear)). Just don't wear the necklace and it's all good.❤️
She has a nice personality and style but she has no business doing makeup tutorials. Makeup artist she is not, lol. But I guess lack of talent doesn't stop all the other famous beauty gurus on youtube.
What did I say that wasn't proper english? I'm genuinely curious. Let me dumb down what I said so you can understand it: She isn't good at applying makeup.
StinkyButton That's kind of my point. She obviously has waaaaay more subscribers than I do, but she isn't really talented. Anyone can do what she is doing, shoot even I can do it. But I'm not a pretty white girl so I'm obviously not going to get the same results.
I'm Slavic so ofc I don't speak for Asian people, but if someone is educated on the concept, respects it, speaks the language and doesn't use it as an aesthetic but is appreciating it, how is it appropriation? She isn't asianfishing or mocking it in any way
I love your vids! Also I love your tutorials and I think you are a wonderful and an awesome person ! :3 don't let other people put you downs stay who you are because you seem like a wonderful person :)
I absolutely love this. Ur kimono is gorgeous and I love the whole set. I absolutely love the japanese styles for geshias. There so beautiful and unique
david garcia ? a geisha is originally someone who dressing in constume for entertainment. it literally is a costume. do youself a favor and check with google or something before you post a comment.
david garcia I don't understand the whole "appropriation" thing why is it bad? Everyone does things from every culture sometimes. Japanese people dress up like Santa which is part of western culture and they make anime about Jesus so I don't see how this is different?
June First It's different because BAD WHITE people are stealing things that are non-white (since white is obviously a culture, there's no difference between what Italians culture is and what German culture is), the other way around it's supposedly not bad because apparently those horrible WHITE people enforce their culture on everyone. Sarcasm aside, cultural appropriation is supposedly bad because it reinforces stereotypes? Which is kind of hypocritical, because apparently dreadlocks belong to black people and kimonos belong to the Japanese. That's stereotyping imo.
Personally, I don't understand this whole getting offended on someone else's behalf. If you are Japanese and feel that this is appropriation then fair enough, but if you aren't personally Japanese you have no real right to say it's offensive. Just my opinion.
Man. Venus Angelic is such an intresting channel. I love watching her videos. I learn some things about Japan from her and I see things that I would never see. This girl makes me want to meet Japan one day and even meet Venus and thank her. So you guys in the comment section relax! You can sent her a message if you really want to tell her sth and not hate her in the comments. But I forgot that you are the 'SMART' ones.
I love your tutorials Venus! Don't listen to all of the people trying to bring you down, just ignore them and keep being your positive, sweet self :-) also when are you going to be giving us more lessons on the Japanese language? I found your lesson on how to say I love you fascinating
+Aliyah Jones lmao wtf she lives in japan as a model and half of her viewers come to her for Asian related content, thats like saying a Japanese person wearing western makeup or living in america means they are trying to be white,,,,no chill
+Aliyah Jones lmao wtf she lives in japan as a model and half of her viewers come to her for Asian related content, thats like saying a Japanese person wearing western makeup or living in america means they are trying to be white,,,,no chill
Maybe I haven't seen enough of her videos but where has she fetishized and invaded anything??? I'm not going to even try to argue with someone who is obviously so biased to see what her actual intentions are.
Seriously who cares if she didn't do it completely correctly? Most of the people who are screaming that this is racist are not even Japanese. However it's still not racist, many other people on youtube have done this makeup before. Racism would be her bashing on Japanese culture and geisha's when she's in fact praising and loving the culture. Jesus christ people really need to chill out, how can you live happily if every tiny thing pisses you off? This is a really cute video Venus, I appreciate the effort and production you put into this.
StinkyButton All I find are Pictures and nothing written about it, And in most of those pictures all I get are actual samurai. So even I cannot believe you in this.
Don't get me wrong...you're amazing ❤ but to me...that makeup didn't look nice on you...only from that distance at the end with that sword did it look nice. Sorry 😕
Im so done with the "cultural appropriation" thing! like calm down! If you paint your face black you are doing black face, if you braid your hair you are making fun of black people, if you like asian stuff then you are doing yellow face... Grow up people this is 2015 no 1890! whats next? ugh
+Yo Nivanz why would someone want to paint their face black? and maybe when there is actually equality for all it wont matter so much, but guess what, there isnt
Timeah Cadell Maybe in America but in other parts of the world there is not so much racism, Im from Chile and my family is from Italy and do u think I care when people say mama mia with a paper moustache and a chef costume? neither does my family
+Yo Nivanz well thats you, you cant speak for an entire race of people. Just because you feel that way dosen't mean other people aren't sensitive or hurt by it,
Timeah Cadell same with you, you speak like every people get offended by that and its not the truth, 2 years ago my mom traveled to Korea and when they where on Seoul they offered her a photo wearing a traditional dress with a black wig and that's not cultural appropriation...neither is this video
+Yo Nivanz Funny thing you mention korea, im korean American, and i know that alot of people who hand out cultural things and dressings do it for a profit only, in no way are they inviting you into the culture. And guess what maybe it DOSENT bother some people of that race, but when it comes to people being humiliated, sexualized or dehumanized for it (as most asian women are) then its a fucking problem.
Please tell me wear you got your gorgeous kimono! I've been looking for yukata for a small ceremony in Kyoto but cannot find a nice quality one anywhere
If she were to make a video on "how to look like a black person", imagine the outcry! Why is it suddenly fine to do "how to look like an eastern Asian" video? The double standard is simply outrageous.
+Strawberry Muffin Uhm that is still offensive. You can´t simply become a geisha with make up. Geisha´s had to work years and years to become a Maiko first, that alone asks for alot of disciplined work. It´s very offensive that she takes their culture so lightly. Read the comment on top , there you will see the opinion of a REAL japanese woman.
Finn Plays She is NOT doing her tutorials for cosplay... And by the way you can't cosplay a Geisha... Neither are her 'How to look like a Korean girl' or 'How to look Asian' tutorials for cosplay are they.
+Meli Tae You can't cosplay as a geisha? Really? I guess all of those girls at Comicon are real live geisha and not just some stupid kids in costumes! I should have asked them to perform a tea ceremony for me, what a wasted opportunity.
How to look like a Geisha would be a better intro than How to be a Geisha because this tutorial is not how to be a Geisha wtf you can't just be a Geisha through a video :/
She isn't trying to be one she's doing a tutorial btw did you know japanese geishas love that foreign ppl love their culture they don't get mad at them like most ppl calm down not that big of a deal you sound like a child rn
Eva look up geisha make up technique and you will understand. Even though any style of makeup looks good on Venus it's not technically correct! I still adore her though!
A geisha is not supposed to look like this at all, and the way she portrays them is kinda wrong about the context. Like, the sword, the place she is standing in...
A lot of people are like "how to be a geisha?!?! That takes years of hard work!!" Yeah we know but it is obviously about LOOKING like one not BEING one despite the title( and I'm proud of Venus she gets so much hate but still does what makes her happy! c: )
turn our tables. maybe i will learn swedish, dye my hair blonde, lighten my eyes, move there. i am now a swede. i will try to fit in and act as if i know all about there. but only focusing on cute , happy, sugary things. plastic things. i am no longer japanese. my dna, my genes, my essence is swede now. because i simply have chosen to declare myself a swede. no longer a japanese. and it is okay. because it is appreciation of the culture.
She actually isnt, she lives in Japan, knows the culture, and has limits. I don't think a weaboo has limits in loving and being obsessed with Japan; sometimes she can be cringe, but it's okay, she respects Japan and its culture. She did researches for this video, so stop bashing something you wouldnt even have taken the time to do.
If she said she loves african culture and love their looks and trying to make video on how to be african would you guys still justify her for doing it? Because right now you all are justifying her yellowface ing asian culture.
It's amazing to see a geisha tutorial that's well researched. Most western portrayal of geisha is stylized and extremely racist, but this one is very accurate and you seem very educated on what goes into looking like a geisha.
Actually it's not accurate at all, beautiful yes but it isn't a geisha. If anything it's an interpretation or a Maiko (sp?) not saying it's bad, it's just not a geisha.
Don't listen to anyone who says this is racist because it so is not! At least she had the nerve to upload a Japanease makeup tutorial. I love this makeup and think it really stands out, and that's what I like! You are very talented! Xxx☺️
Im japanese and im not really good at english but she did it completely fine! Im not at all offended and she look great with the make up. I dont think she needs to do it 100% complete because its just a cheap tutorial.
+Saki the Fab Exactly. I think everyone who's not Japanese is complaining about it.
+Saki the Fab ホンマに?安いけど、ちょっと変じゃない?
Zoeoe CL
そうかなー。別にDIYだから結構上手く見えたんだけど
そうですよね。でもコスプレのためなんだ、それはちょっと、それよりまあ大丈夫かも
Lol
Love how people are calling it cultural appropriation
As an Asian if love to see a foreigner appreciate my culture
And plus she lives in Japan
Knows the language very well
And even learns about the history
I really don't know why
People hate seeing others learn about someone else's culture
She's lucky to be even living in Japan
Since I'm an Asian American I would love to travel or even live in another country other than the U.S.
Some people might be more upset because it doesnt look EXACTLY like Geisha makeup.. Who knows
just because you are okay with it doesn't mean its okay...
+kitty yt are you racist or something? Is she not allowed to present your culture or appreciate it because of her race?
+Gigolo DAve some people think its offensive. Calm down, its an opinion.
so true.... I am german/irish/japanese and don't think she is offensive, she just has fun with japanese culture
Love how the people being offend are not even Japanese.
Ikr!!!
Lol

Chikah I agree with you. These most butthurt people seem to be more japanese than the Japanese people themselves...
I'm with chu, fam XD.. I'm halfie, and I'm not offended..
She still yellowfaces in like 90% of her videos though lmao
***** funny because the idea of Elvis himself is racist
Chikah You don't speak for all Japanese people tho! You don't speak for all Asian's either. I know plenty who think she's racist and are constantly offended by her. Her tag's on Tumblr aren't pretty. People want her off TH-cam and they have a good enough reason.

@Lauren Victoria I don't think they're being racist. I think you just misinterpreted the comment.
This is not the olden days lol.....let her have freedom
How everybody freaks out because she didn't do it 100% correctly or didn't explain everything in detail, holy shit don't you have something better to do than complaining about such ridiculous things
not respecting the japanese culture blablabla SHE IS JUST A GIRL WHO DID A MAKE UP TUTORIAL FOR A GEISHA MAKE UP NOTHING ELSE! A MAKE UP TUTORIAL!!!
(to all the haters, sorry if I made grammatical mistakes english is not my first language)
Good job.
Exactly! If you know how to do it "correctly" then just make your own video! She said it was cheap and easy so it's obviously simplified
korean?❤️
김진주 The problem is
1. At 0:34 she's standing in a tokonoma. Its strictly forbidden to stand in one in Japanese culture because it's supposed to hold traditional artwork to be appreciated.
2. She swings around swords like no one's business when geisha/geiko are not supposed to be doing anything like that? It's okay to do a makeup tutorial but to claim to be doing accurate makeup and being in japan while doing these things are not right.

people need to calm down. Venus is a very nice girl to indulge herself in the japanese culture even if she herself is not.

Ya
You gotta admit she edits the videos well
Damn, that is a HUGE powder sponge! Lol, I literally was like, "What is she holding? That's...that's a SPONGE!?"
It looks like a blackboard spongeXD
***** OMG That impressed me too!!
HAHA I THOUGHT IT WAS TOFU
Juan Flores HAHAHA WHAT
***** ahahahahhaha
Technically this is Maiko (apprentice Geisha) makeup. Full fledge Geisha do not wear the iconic makeup that is usually shown. They wear much less. Also Maiko only put lipstick on the bottom lip.

Uhh that is for pre maiko (beginner maiko) when they become a senior maiko they can put lipstick on both lips know your history
i dont understand the hate about the video, she doesnt represent a real geisha, she just shows how to cosplay as one and its awesome with a sword, why not? its her version of her cosplay
I feel just heartbroken for her. People, before you hate, please understand that
LOL
+missymani agreed.
shes not being herself if she has to appropriate an entirely different race
kitty yt her mom made her.
+Jasmine Isnotadalek Why do you think this?
This make up tutorial makes me think, "the one she made years ago was scary" and this shows how much she has improved. You go Venus! You are かわいい
Totally agree, some people are soo fucking stupid
Lucien LaChance white people are so funny
Lucien LaChance this is japanese culture, it's not a costume.
***** I am not "white". I have European blood but by over three quarters I'm Native North American Kay? Why would you assume that I'm white anyway? That's a tad racist, do you mean to imply that because my username is French that I must be white? Which, btw, is not even my name. It is the name a character from an American produced video game.
saya kawaii (vocaloid saya)
"Fucking weaboo trip" says the weaboo to the person with minimal interest in either Japan or anime. Seriously. You expect me to take you seriously when your name is "saya kawaii"?! The Matryoshka doll is a cultural symbol of Russia. Not on the same level as a Geisha or a Maiko, but it is a cultural symbol
And, no, this is not cultural appropriation.
And here is a definition (coutesy Wiki) for anyone still stupid enough to think that this is cultural appropriation;
Cultural appropriation is the adoption of elements of one culture by members of a different cultural group, especially if the adoption is of an oppressed people's cultural elements by members of the dominant culture.[
Lucien LaChance europeans are white too
I've had always gotten tingles from your videos, especially the makeup ones. You have such gentle movements and your accent triggers me also.
Fatmukkaa her accent is great ASMR material indeed :D
People getting offended is so hilarious and the most hilarious thing about it is they are not even japanese
And it hasn't gotten any better the last 5 years lmao
yo, i'm japanese and this video is so fucking racist.
@@satxziv7109
It's not
Stfu and leave
fuck you. you said Japanese people were not being offended, and here I am. I am a japanese person and I say ITS RACIST, and you as a Westerner should not be involved in this.
@@satxziv7109
Gurl. I'm not a Westerner.
And also you don't speak on the behalf of others. Go away now.
What about the neck? Just though u might do it because you love japanese culture and geisha makeup is not only about the face. It is cute, but i was kinda sad u didnt do the neck or tell anything about it. If..you know what i mean?
***** Google it.
They paint theyr face and neck all white, but behind the neck they leave this W mark without the white makeup, it's the only place they show any skin. It has this sensual meaning, u can find the details on google.
***** Actaully, a maiko would leave a "w" mark without painting, but a geisha would paint her whole neck. Just thought to let you know ^ ^
Shamma Almarzooqi i forgot they do it depending on the position. I dont study japanese culture or anything, just know random stuff.
***** thank you for being forward about your knowledge and some background
This was neat. Geisha are incredible. I read a few books on their history, and it's alot of hard work and strict discipline.
Have you read Memoirs of a Geisha?
If you want to talk about a REAL Geisha, you could say that they were slaves. Young girls were given to an elder Geisha, who took care of them (to say lightly). The mother Geisha would auction their virginity for money. That is not respectable. But, I do respect it as history. Just know what you're liking.
+Dallas Wise I know. I wouldn't have posted if I didn't know what I was talking about.
I'm just saying I don't see how slavery is incredible.
+Dallas Wise You have mistaken geisha for oiran, although they look similiar, geisha do not auction off their virginity, they are not prostitute. They are skilled entertainer.
Did you guys forget she's simply doing a makeup tutorial?
It's not racist, a lot of beauty gurus out there had tried Geisha Make Up tutorial, it actually helps to spread about Geisha itself :) Anyway, I think her voice is much more normal now, greattt!!
*helps to spread the knowledge about Geisha itself
Im sorry you missed me with the knowledge.
The make up is fine but you got a few things wrong. The blush on your eye is too much and should be much more softer. Your eyebrows and too thick and uneven (maybe look at some how to geisha vid before you try this again) and you missed the make up down your neck.
Its an okay job and your white base is pretty good. 6/10 You still look very cute regardless Venus but you can do better than this.
kai kirito
Exactly and well put. I do shironuri make up often with my coordinates so as far as the base goes it is fine but missing the neck is a huge eye sore and a bad western costume take on how it is done. Venus is a role model and should make sure to do this this as close as possible not half arsed (not an insult to her though I am a fan). Just because it is on a budget does not mean it can not look correct.
shes not a professional she did the best she could
Samantha Cheng
Even non professionals can do better than this. Again I am a fan, I have no problem with venus but a true YTr takes good con crit well and Venus takes con crit very well
SmashGames75
Real mature kid. This is someone who clearly does not know the meaning of "Again I am a fan, I have no problem with venus but a true YTr takes good con crit well and Venus takes con crit very well
She studied the entire japanes history and language she even knows the meaning behind every makeup layer she applied
So she isn't disrespecting japan at all
People here are probably just jealous of her beauty and are trying desperately to find a little small reason to hate her and cover up their stupid jealousy
The haters really come out on the internet. You did a fine job Venus! Keep doing videos! You're super cute in all your tutorials!
It's so nice seeing you post so much Venus 😊 Loved this tutorial!!!
am I the only one who don't find this video offensive? -.-
+Alina Song I didn't find this video offensive, I found it interesting, plus she is inspired by Japanese culture. She is married to a Japanese guy too.
+강태빈 that's what I said, and she isn't Married to a Japanese guy. She dated one but they broke up
She said they got married in a newer video... didnt she?
No you're not
I'm not but most people who aren't even asian are so offended
You look adorable!
AQDuke why are you everywhere i am?
Uh thanks i guess...
+AQDuke what are you talking about? I don't know what are 'complemints'
AQDuke
You're so beautiful! You did wonderful on this. "Geisha truly are a work of art" couldn't of said any better. Lovely. I love it.
This is so freacking cool Venus *-*
She claims to know so much about the culture, but doesn't know a geisha wouldn't be caught dead with a sword! They were meant to be companions, things of beauty, not violent!
Sometimes people dance with swords to entertain. In the description it says they entertained. I don't know if they do this in Japan but I do know that swords aren't just for slaughtering.
They mostly danced with fans or decorative umbrellas.Swords were supposed to be things of honor, and back then women were not supposed to have them.Do you think it would be entertaining if someone dishonored you?
Geisha don't perform with swords they often use fans in their dances but never a sword!!
She probably just used a sword to be dramatic x3
A Huffman ya ever hear of sword dancing
Normally I roll my eyes at what people deem as cultural appropriation, because most of the time it's cultural exchange and they are just being overly sensitive, but THIS, this is bad. Geishas are sacred to Japanese culture and is NOT a costume, it would be as if I were to make a OOTD with a Native American warbonnet. There's a difference with just teaching us popular Japanese makeup trends or liking j-fashion with treating Geisha like a halloween costume. it's really cringy and embarrassing. If you like Japanese culture, you wouldn't think this is ok.
I absolutely love and adore the Japanese culture, and I find this OKAY.
Why is everyone so mean
Why is she taking part of a culture? That white people discriminated for doing the geisha look?
@@lulbb4619 .... what?

Lol at everyone getting offended. I don't even give a shit.

You look so beautiful in this, good job!
Why is everbody beeing so mean? It makes me sad, she seems to put so much effort in her videos and everyone just point out what she did wrong ;-;
It's called jealousy.
***** It's right in general. I think constructive criticism is very important. But some comments here weren't constructive criticsism, they were just really mean. o.o
***** She is? o.o
Mh okay. But even if this was true, why do people have to be as bad as she was?
yeah whatever but it still doesn't make it better what people are writing. I mean they just proof that they are not even a little bit better.
You never cease to amaze me with your tutorials Venus, i just adore you. ♡
I love your videos I watch them every day any day keep it up Venus you are one of my heros😊😘
You are standing in the tokonoma at the beginning of this video. For someone who claims to know a lot about Japanese culture, that is a very disrespectful thing to do :(
yeah! you are right.
Cunning What does that mean and why is it disrespectful? (Not challenging you, I'm just curious. I know pretty much nothing about Japanese culture.)
Cunning nothing about she's wearing the kimono wrong? my kimono kitsuke sensei would scream D:!!
I think she stood on it on purpose, because tokonomas are typically used to display art, in the beginning of the video she said geishas are truly a work of art so i think she meant to do it in that way
I also wanna know
Wowwww so beautiful!! Loved itttt
Very nice, however the katana sword was a bit too much. Geisha do not use a samurai's sword.
Ayumi Sato For more authenticity she should have had peppers in her sleeves.
They do sometimes in TV shows and anime, although not as part of any official dance.
Google "Geisha sword dance." Then, apologize to Venus for hating just to make yourself feel better.
The dance was off, but geisha DO know how to use Samurai sword. -.-
This is absolutely beautiful Venus! I love watching your videos!
the funny things in here, anything what Venus do = always wrong.
get a life people. it's just tutorial anyway... she just learning how to do it. its her hobby, you can do it too... yeah.. if you want. if you don't, then shut up. it's like you showing yourself as "haters".
IVe been waiting for this since you posted on instagram :D yay finally
this is adorable im sorry everyone is yelling at you TT^TT
That makeup must have been heavy. Also were did you get your kimono it is so cute.
in reality, no one can say 'how to be' a geisha. takes years of hard work, dedication, and practice. you must be able to make it to maiko first. and even that is hard. playing in makeup and saying you look like geisha is ignorant and disrespectful to all the hard working Japanese women who took years to earn the title geisha. how to try to look like one would have been a better title. i hate how you treat my culture so light when you really know nothing. real issues and struggles going on every day in my country. but you only focus on stereotypes and all things kawaii, like this is truly what we are about. leave my country alone. stick to being swiss.
*****
you're a total idiot so i wont even take the time to try to explain why you're stupid on so many levels.
I get it, she offended your culture. But I'm sure that was not her intention. I'm very sorry that you got offended in the process, but you could have said it nicer instead of coming off as harsh as you did
Kai Naito
oh well, what can you do? i said what i said the way i said it. sorry you feel that way.
OR0R0 no, i wasn't offended at all. i just felt like with all the negativity she gets already she didn't need more of it.
but i understand why you're so angry. have to consider that she didn't know though
Kai Naito
it doesn't take much to find out, since she loves my culture so much. but i see your point.
This is truly beautiful Venus! I love how you did the makeup! Keep up the amazing work!
Love your kimono btw!
yaaaay I love this makeup tutorial, I'll probably do it in the next wedding ceremony I go XD
Just don't wear the necklace and it's all good.❤️
great job Venus! 💞
Geni H Lol have you heard her pronounce the word "gel"? I'm a fan of hers, I'm just saying. LOL.
How many TH-cam subscribers do you have?
StinkyButton That's kind of my point. She obviously has waaaaay more subscribers than I do, but she isn't really talented. Anyone can do what she is doing, shoot even I can do it. But I'm not a pretty white girl so I'm obviously not going to get the same results.
That one sentence reminded me of Yoda.
That kimono is so pretty~
I'm an Asian,

im completely fine with it, id let anyone wear a sari just like east asians are with kimono!
I'm Slavic so ofc I don't speak for Asian people, but if someone is educated on the concept, respects it, speaks the language and doesn't use it as an aesthetic but is appreciating it, how is it appropriation? She isn't asianfishing or mocking it in any way

I absolutely love this. Ur kimono is gorgeous and I love the whole set. I absolutely love the japanese styles for geshias. There so beautiful and unique
Ok GURL now you have crossed a line with cultural appropriation. It's a culture not a costume. Good god girl get it together
david garcia ? a geisha is originally someone who dressing in constume for entertainment. it literally is a costume. do youself a favor and check with google or something before you post a comment.
david garcia I don't understand the whole "appropriation" thing why is it bad? Everyone does things from every culture sometimes. Japanese people dress up like Santa which is part of western culture and they make anime about Jesus so I don't see how this is different?
It's better to appreciate then having people make total fun of it
June First It's different because BAD WHITE people are stealing things that are non-white (since white is obviously a culture, there's no difference between what Italians culture is and what German culture is), the other way around it's supposedly not bad because apparently those horrible WHITE people enforce their culture on everyone.
As always i am amazed at how talented you are!! Thanks for sharing!!!
0:41 Looks like she's after my soul x3

This is a really cute video Venus, I appreciate the effort and production you put into this.
geishas actually dont use katanas...
Google "Geisha Katana dance." Then, consider posting only that which you know to be fact, instead of speculating for the sake of drama and hating.

I am Japanese and I am happy that Venus did this. It is like cosplay geisha. Make up looks very cute
Don't get me wrong...you're amazing ❤ but to me...that makeup didn't look nice on you...only from that distance at the end with that sword did it look nice. Sorry 😕
I like the kimono. Keep on doing your thing Girl.

+Meli Tae Maybe she's doing it for cosplay. It's not offensive if it's cosplay is it? She's teaching you how to cosplay as them...
Amy Jane Cosplay is meant for game characters, anime characters, etc. Not using traditional clothing as a costume.
Great job and beautiful cosplay!! :3

I feel like she looks more beautiful without makeup
How to look like a Geisha would be a better intro than How to be a Geisha because this tutorial is not how to be a Geisha wtf you can't just be a Geisha through a video :/
She isn't trying to be one she's doing a tutorial btw did you know japanese geishas love that foreign ppl love their culture they don't get mad at them like most ppl calm down not that big of a deal you sound like a child rn

Gosh, this video is wrong on so many levels. Those eyebrows are killing me.
HyouriChan how is it wrong on so many levels?
Eva look up geisha make up technique and you will understand. Even though any style of makeup looks good on Venus it's not technically correct! I still adore her though!
faerywillowtree yes but its not wrong on so many levels, i thought it was ok i mean she's not a pro obviously its not gonna be perfect
A geisha is not supposed to look like this at all, and the way she portrays them is kinda wrong about the context. Like, the sword, the place she is standing in...
im sure she didnt know
A lot of people are like "how to be a geisha?!?!
OR0R0 Do what you want but let me tell you one thing: Venus isn't Swedish....(lol)
I hate to say it because I agree with the overall message, but they right. She's Swiss.

Venus you are definitely a makeup GENUIS! :)
Does anyone find this is extremely disrespectful? I really do...
It is!

Jirachi Wish
Says the person who's profile and name is Jirachi.
Jirachi Wish riight, okay a she weabo and so are you last i checked Pokèmon from japan.
Is no one gonna talk about the awesome background? Great video venus! :D
If she said she loves african culture and love their looks and trying to make video on how to be african would you guys still justify her for doing it? Because right now you all are justifying her yellowface ing asian culture.
Abstranger she isn’t trying to look asian
It's amazing to see a geisha tutorial that's well researched. Most western portrayal of geisha is stylized and extremely racist, but this one is very accurate and you seem very educated on what goes into looking like a geisha.
Actually it's not accurate at all, beautiful yes but it isn't a geisha. If anything it's an interpretation or a Maiko (sp?) not saying it's bad, it's just not a geisha.
This is not even accurate...
Don't listen to anyone who says this is racist because it so is not! At least she had the nerve to upload a Japanease makeup tutorial. I love this makeup and think it really stands out, and that's what I like! You are very talented! Xxx☺️
