- Today I will turn a Monster High doll into the most underrated Disney Princess - Kida from Atlantis: The Lost Empire. I will draw a new face, recreate her very special creative haircut and make an outfit for her.

Same! But a lot of people I know haven’t even SEEN it! 😢
Atlantis occurred during Disney's "weird" phase. I don't remember all the movies that were it the weird phase. Basically from what I remember reading about it was that there was some higher ups just letting the writers and animators do what they wanted and not paying any attention and it resulted in some of the most under-promoted films they ever put out. So because of the lack of promotion of those films and them being literal passion projects from the creative teams they (understandably) developed a cult following.
There was an Atlantis 2 Milo’s return but that went straight to video release
Because not many people have even heard of it, let alone seen it. It wasn't widely advertised, etc., etc.
I personally cringed because I felt it was a pretty blatant ripoff of the 90s anime Nadia: the Secrets of Blue Water. I had the same reaction to Lion King, which was a ripoff of Osamu Tezuka’s Leo: King of the Jungle.
I personally hate how Disney hire the most creative, talented people but force them to rip off other works that have been proven to be successful. Worse yet, they claim the stories as “Disney Original.”
I’ve worked in creative field for 20 years, and I die inside every time I’m forced to plagiarize works of other artists by corporations. I work for a tiny studio now where they value quality and originality, and I’m much happier now.

Atlantis was underrated and kida did not get the recognition she deserved as a strong and amazing Disney princess. Ty for this creation of her.

Wait, didn't she become a Queen? That's honestly better, imo, just because we don't really have many Queens in the lineup. Disney missed a great opportunity with Kida.
You both are right, but so did Belle as he had no parents either and was the sole monarch, but that’s just being technical. However we still call her a Disney princess regardless 😉. Kida never even got a representation in any Disney park, and if so it’s not a big one, like the others. She deserved that at the very least.
As a child, I was (and still am to this day) a huge fan of Kida. What I love about her, aside from her kick-ass personality, is the fact that she's very much the only princess who became a literal godlike entity.
Literally everything Elsa did Kida did it first and it's so sad she doesn't get the recognition she deserves 😢 She was my favourite unpopular princess along with Esmeralda

Same! And treasure planet was too! I still think the animation has stood the test of time and it's beautiful even by today's standards.
Atlantis and treasure planet remain so underrated I think they came at the end of the Disney renaissance so people just have no idea they exist though both are incredible. I noticed Doja Cat dressed as Kida one year for halloween and looked incredible!
Yeah someone told me Disney didn't do much marketing, or any at all, for Treasure Planet since they wanted to save all the marketing for some other movie. That's probably why the movie didn't do so well, because nobody knew it was out!
@@leviacronym6770I think it was lilo and stitch that was released at the same time so they didn’t want the Alien story to clash which is sad since treasure planet is a gem❤

Yes, I love the movie accurate haircut! I've sent a few people make their own ooak Kida dolls, but they always give her pretty long hair with perfectly cut bangs. This choppy style, to me, fits her personality so well and is just more visually interesting. Well done!

I actually had the doll!! I don't anymore, but I really liked how you could press the crystal on her chest and it'd glow for a while.
My brother and I quote this movie to each other all the time. "Hey look, I made a bridge..."

There is actually a wonderfull disney designer Kida doll.
My 8-year old daughter and I love this doll, but we have one problem: she’s too light! Kida is a dark skinned character, which is one of the things that makes her white hair and blue details so stunning.

Agree. I was waiting for her to add more dark pigment. And when showing the hairstyle and outfit references, the pictures seemed whitewashed imo. At least the disneystore LE Kida doll got the right skintone. Even back when the movie came out, Mattel made the doll too light. She is a dark woman with cold undertones.

My favorite underrated Disney movie is Treasure Planet. I'd LOVE to see you do a Captain Amelia doll. Im sure you'd do an amazing job. And her outfit made by your mom... PERFECTION!
Kida, Anastasia, and Esmeralda were my favorites as a little girl. Love this!
She has so much physical personality. Her gestures and the color really works.
Every princess you do is elevated above the last. Her style and outfit gorgeous. I do wish her skin tone was a tad darker like the character. Great job.

Atlantis didn’t do well at the box office. It was part of the last fully 2D movies as 3D was taking over. I was obsessed with her! I’m so glad you’re making her.
Kida is my favorite! I love Cree Summer, I love her personality and character arc. This is truly a hidden classic.

There is another magical Disney princess that is less well known called Eilonwy in the movie “The Black Cauldron” it’s one of the darker movies. Edit: Kida’s waist sash needs to be sewn to her skirt to prevent it riding up (as seen in some of the photos)
I’ve never heard of Kida so this will be enlightening! You never cease to amaze me in that you take something iffy at best and transform it into beauty. Fridays aren’t nearly as good unless you notify us that you are going to create another incredible piece. Thank you for your art! 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
I highly recommend you watch Atlantis then! Growing up it was absolutely one of my favorite movies. Right up there with treasure planet and Mulan and Pocahontas for me
Black Cauldron, Treasure planet, and Journey to Atlantis are some of my favorite Disney movies, im so happy to see Kida get the love she deserves.

This was such a great one! My kids had never heard of Atlantis, until about a month ago. We watched it and they were both confused how it didn’t have the multiple “anniversary releases” that Disney does. It’s so under the radar, but so good! You did a great job on this one!

atlantis the lost empire is one of my FAVORITE animated movies ever, i was so awestruck by it when i saw it in theaters as a child! this is wonderful!
I loved that you did this character. This was my favorite movie when it came out. Launched on my birthday. It was so different. I loved your take on it. I felt though her spear was more a stone than a metal. One of things i loved about Atlantis was it seemed all their tech was made of stone.
Atlantis feels like one of those movies that didn't get enough love for how great it was. I love your Kida doll, her hair turned out so wonderfully
I love Atlantis! I wish there was more out there for this movie. And this is one of the only movies I would love if they made into a live-action movie.

I love Atlantis. It was one of my favorite movies as a child. The sense of a big adventure may be unmatched in other Disney animated movies. I also liked the more angular style in the characters appearances.

Possibly even less well known than Kida is Princess Eilonwy from “The Black Cauldron”. She’s a pretty feisty character, notably younger than any of the franchise princesses (with a possible exception of Snow White) and very proactive in her story.
Eilonwy has very very little merchandise, no dolls, and for The Black Cauldron as a whole there is not much either. Taran was lucky to have a two pack Funko pop but it really is only because the successful scariness of his villain. I actually had to order a decently pricy custom of an Eilonwy Funko Pop and I collect all merchandise Black Cauldron. If Eilonwy was inducted to the hall of princesses she would be the youngest, unless we count Princess Sofia.
Atlantis is my second favourite Disney film (first being Fantasia) but she was such a role model and inspiration to me, and Milo! Just the whole crew of rag tag misfits! Beautiful doll and thank you for showing such a forgotten Disney gal! ❤

one of my fav movies Kida is a force or power, grace, strength, beauty and compassion! i was inspired by the choices she made as queen even as child. learned a lot from this move. trust and honesty go a long way, but so do greed and lies.

I’m not a Disney fan BUT I’m a fan of fine art and love watch a creator work. You are that!! I just have to say you may have solved a mystery in my home. We took in a cat needing a home 10ish years ago totally did not understand from previous owner where her name came from. We just knew it sounded like Keeta so we continued to use it. We also call her Queen Keeta so I’m quite amused and pleased that Kida is a queen. 😘🐈🐈

Seriously, I was 8 years old when I saw Atlantis in the movies, and it's been my favorite Disney movie ever since, mostly because of Kida, but also the design and animation style as well as the diverse characters and the over-all story. But Kida has always been my absolute favorite princess, and the fact that she's the first princess who actually became a queen just made her even more amazing in my eyes.
I have a feeling it didn't do as well as it deserved to is that it's a bit of a different art style than the other Disney classics, as well as the fact that it's not a musical style movie. And the ones with songs in them have typically speaking made it bigger than those without.
I'm sure there are other factors too, but those are the only bigger ones that I would imagine a child might react to.
I'm a songbird and is typically drawn more to those movies as well. But there's just something about Atlantis that puts it on top for me, and so far no other has surpassed it.

Atlantis was my favorite growing up! I had the biggest crushes on Kida, Audrey and Helga lol. Kida is definitely my favorite Disney royalty. Id love to see your take on other Atlantis characters, maybe even a Crystal Kida, in the future!
If I recall, the movie premiered in 2001, and suffered by coming out in competition with Shrek. I had a lot going on that summer, and then, in September, there was terrorism, destruction, and war. I think there were many of us who didn't think much of going to the movies then. I never saw Shrek either. But seeing this repaint reminds me that there was a Disney movie called Atlantis, and I'd like to see it. Thank you, Marina.

I loved Atlantis! The whacky characters composing the exploration team, Milo’s awkwardness and Kida! She is amazing! The whole premise of the film was great - it’s surprising they haven’t cast one of the Sprouse twins as Milo in a live-action remake!
Atlantis Lost Empire and Treasure planet are both my favorite Disney movies. And both are highly underrated.
