Atlantis occurred during Disney's "weird" phase. I don't remember all the movies that were it the weird phase. Basically from what I remember reading about it was that there was some higher ups just letting the writers and animators do what they wanted and not paying any attention and it resulted in some of the most under-promoted films they ever put out. So because of the lack of promotion of those films and them being literal passion projects from the creative teams they (understandably) developed a cult following.
I personally cringed because I felt it was a pretty blatant ripoff of the 90s anime Nadia: the Secrets of Blue Water. I had the same reaction to Lion King, which was a ripoff of Osamu Tezuka’s Leo: King of the Jungle. I personally hate how Disney hire the most creative, talented people but force them to rip off other works that have been proven to be successful. Worse yet, they claim the stories as “Disney Original.” I’ve worked in creative field for 20 years, and I die inside every time I’m forced to plagiarize works of other artists by corporations. I work for a tiny studio now where they value quality and originality, and I’m much happier now.
Wait, didn't she become a Queen? That's honestly better, imo, just because we don't really have many Queens in the lineup. Disney missed a great opportunity with Kida.
You both are right, but so did Belle as he had no parents either and was the sole monarch, but that’s just being technical. However we still call her a Disney princess regardless 😉. Kida never even got a representation in any Disney park, and if so it’s not a big one, like the others. She deserved that at the very least.
As a child, I was (and still am to this day) a huge fan of Kida. What I love about her, aside from her kick-ass personality, is the fact that she's very much the only princess who became a literal godlike entity.

Yes, I love the movie accurate haircut! I've sent a few people make their own ooak Kida dolls, but they always give her pretty long hair with perfectly cut bangs. This choppy style, to me, fits her personality so well and is just more visually interesting. Well done!
Atlantis and treasure planet remain so underrated I think they came at the end of the Disney renaissance so people just have no idea they exist though both are incredible. I noticed Doja Cat dressed as Kida one year for halloween and looked incredible!
Yeah someone told me Disney didn't do much marketing, or any at all, for Treasure Planet since they wanted to save all the marketing for some other movie. That's probably why the movie didn't do so well, because nobody knew it was out!

There is another magical Disney princess that is less well known called Eilonwy in the movie “The Black Cauldron” it’s one of the darker movies. Edit: Kida’s waist sash needs to be sewn to her skirt to prevent it riding up (as seen in some of the photos)

Possibly even less well known than Kida is Princess Eilonwy from “The Black Cauldron”. She’s a pretty feisty character, notably younger than any of the franchise princesses (with a possible exception of Snow White) and very proactive in her story.
Eilonwy has very very little merchandise, no dolls, and for The Black Cauldron as a whole there is not much either. Taran was lucky to have a two pack Funko pop but it really is only because the successful scariness of his villain. I actually had to order a decently pricy custom of an Eilonwy Funko Pop and I collect all merchandise Black Cauldron. If Eilonwy was inducted to the hall of princesses she would be the youngest, unless we count Princess Sofia.

If I recall, the movie premiered in 2001, and suffered by coming out in competition with Shrek. I had a lot going on that summer, and then, in September, there was terrorism, destruction, and war. I think there were many of us who didn't think much of going to the movies then. I never saw Shrek either. But seeing this repaint reminds me that there was a Disney movie called Atlantis, and I'd like to see it. Thank you, Marina.

This was such a great one! My kids had never heard of Atlantis, until about a month ago. We watched it and they were both confused how it didn’t have the multiple “anniversary releases” that Disney does. It’s so under the radar, but so good! You did a great job on this one!

I think Atlantis gets bypassed a lot because it had a more mature storyline with animated violence and even death. It was pretty revolutionary for Disney at the time of release but may not have had the G rating of many of their other animated movies. It is one of my favourites, thanks for making Kida!

I’m not a Disney fan BUT I’m a fan of fine art and love watch a creator work. You are that!! I just have to say you may have solved a mystery in my home. We took in a cat needing a home 10ish years ago totally did not understand from previous owner where her name came from. We just knew it sounded like Keeta so we continued to use it. We also call her Queen Keeta so I’m quite amused and pleased that Kida is a queen. 😘🐈🐈
The way I absolutely SQUEALED when I saw that you were making Kida!! 😍😍🤩🤩 I've been requesting this since you started the Disney princess makeovers, so this made me so incredibly happy 🥰🥰 As always, you made a positively amazing doll, and if I could I would definitely buy it! 100/10 from me! ❤ Seriously, I was 8 years old when I saw Atlantis in the movies, and it's been my favorite Disney movie ever since, mostly because of Kida, but also the design and animation style as well as the diverse characters and the over-all story. But Kida has always been my absolute favorite princess, and the fact that she's the first princess who actually became a queen just made her even more amazing in my eyes. I have a feeling it didn't do as well as it deserved to is that it's a bit of a different art style than the other Disney classics, as well as the fact that it's not a musical style movie. And the ones with songs in them have typically speaking made it bigger than those without. I'm sure there are other factors too, but those are the only bigger ones that I would imagine a child might react to. I'm a songbird and is typically drawn more to those movies as well. But there's just something about Atlantis that puts it on top for me, and so far no other has surpassed it. Thank you so much for finally bringing my lost queen to life ❤

There are multiple official Kida dolls. They just made an incredibly detailed collectors doll. Before that there were 2 Kida dolls when the movie came out, there’s even a Milo doll.

Atlantis was my favorite growing up! I had the biggest crushes on Kida, Audrey and Helga lol. Kida is definitely my favorite Disney royalty. Id love to see your take on other Atlantis characters, maybe even a Crystal Kida, in the future!

I’m not a Disney fan BUT I’m a fan of fine art and love watch a creator work. You are that!! I just have to say you may have solved a mystery in my home. We took in a cat needing a home 10ish years ago totally did not understand from previous owner where her name came from. We just knew it sounded like Keeta so we continued to use it. We also call her Queen Keeta so I’m quite amused and pleased that Kida is a queen. 😘🐈🐈

Seriously, I was 8 years old when I saw Atlantis in the movies, and it's been my favorite Disney movie ever since, mostly because of Kida, but also the design and animation style as well as the diverse characters and the over-all story. But Kida has always been my absolute favorite princess, and the fact that she's the first princess who actually became a queen just made her even more amazing in my eyes.
I have a feeling it didn't do as well as it deserved to is that it's a bit of a different art style than the other Disney classics, as well as the fact that it's not a musical style movie. And the ones with songs in them have typically speaking made it bigger than those without.
I'm sure there are other factors too, but those are the only bigger ones that I would imagine a child might react to.
I'm a songbird and is typically drawn more to those movies as well. But there's just something about Atlantis that puts it on top for me, and so far no other has surpassed it.

Jay...Kida is one of my topp favorite princesses and I really like the movie as well....I am just sad that there is no official princess Kida doll, so this made my day.
There are multiple official Kida dolls. They just made an incredibly detailed collectors doll. Before that there were 2 Kida dolls when the movie came out, there’s even a Milo doll.
