You should visit a village near nwakchott called um-al qura, and document it. Thats my village famous for scientists of religion. If you need to gind it its 58 km from the capital and 7 km from a town called wadi-ann-aqah. You should ask the locals. Please do go there though you wont find me. Im right here in the uae bored to hell

Hi Lewis. I visited Nouakchott in January 2019 and pretty much had the same expreriences. Apart from the smell of the fish market - I didn't find it that bad, I would rather call it 'special'. I didn't make any videos, photos only, so thanks for sharing this, it's nostalgic to me. Good job, cheers!

Love your content! Im planing a trip to Mauritania this summer. (Im Norwegian) I have a few questions and I would really appreciate the help . Im thinking about staying for 17 days. My flight is landing in Nouakchott. Then Im going to Nouadhibou to see the ship graveyard. And then taking the orb train from Nouadhibou to Choum. Then I will travel back to Nouakchott to chatch my flight home. Im sure I will find other things to do, but thats the main marks on my checklist.
What is the easiest way of getting around? Is it easy to get into the desert? is the shipswrecks still there? And can you still take the orb train?:)
Minibuses will get you around! They have separate “stations” so for example in Nouakchott there’ll be a Nouadhibou area where all buses head that way, etc. You’ll be able to ask hotel or strangers how to get there - or taxi drivers! I don’t think the ship graveyard is still there, and the train, I believe, runs twice a day still and always has! Although it’s impossible to know what time it goes. Check out the beach north of the fishing harbor next time, it's almost no people there and imho one of the greatest beaches I've ever been (some high waves there though). Would have been nice to see more of the environment you were walking around tbh, and if you would move the camera slower (tip: when you think it's too slow, than it's just about right).

FOOD: I was advised by a guy in Western Sahara to avoid street food because tourists often get sick from it (food poisoning). I ate some hot sandwiches and a lot of supermarket stuff, like snack things, and came away totally fine. There are lots of restaurants and cafes that you can get decent food in too, depending on what you're after. I have a pretty solid immune system though so if you don't, then maybe avoid cooked meat especially in the streets, and only drink bottled water. You should be good. HOTEL: I stayed in Auberge Sahara for my first night in Nouakchott (about $20US for a double bed with shower and toilet, but I feel like this price could change a lot depending on who's working there...). Then in Auberge Menata for the next night, nearer the centre. It was a similar set-up, both seemed ok hygiene-wise but of course the standards are very low here, and beds were alright. Auberge Menata cost about $20 too. I found these by chance when walking around so maybe if you shop about you can get it cheaper. SAFETY: After the initial "wow, this is very African" and feeling like an outsider, I felt safe the whole time. I ended up in Cinquieme district (absolutely advised that you avoid it -- I had a good time there but it's very well known for crime, violence etc, even to locals!) and was still ok. Overall, in Nouakchott and Atar, I've felt totally safe and very welcomed by the people. Just keep your wits about you and be friendly to people. They're mostly very nice. Remember where you are though and be sensible and sensitive. RECOMMEND: Absolutely recommend Mauritania. If you mean Nouakchott specifically, I'd say there's not much need to spend more than a day or two there as there isn't a lot to see, it's more about mixing with the locals and seeing a new culture first-hand. Definitely wander about the markets, find the fishing port, and chat to people. Mauritania in general is a great place to visit and I didn't expect to enjoy my time there so much. It's a whole different world, with different priorities but I've had good experiences. Sounds like you have a great trip coming up! I've heard all of the Saharan stuff is beautiful. As per my last vote, I'm currently in Atar having a look around but I don't think I'll end up on a desert tour or anything. If you have any more questions be sure to hit me up and I hope I've been a bit useful!!

@@gerry13cs I felt like I was a stand-out tourist but nobody really looked at me very funnily and everybody I met was super friendly and welcoming. Nobody begged from me or tried to get me to spend money on anything. Make sure you smile at people and say bonjour a lot!
from my experience: no, none at all. i was asked a couple of times if i am a muslim, which i answered honestly to (nope), and nothing came of it. they were just asking out of curiosity but weren’t concerned. and i didn’t even feel like a lot of people noticed me despite being the only white guy for miles, so it wasn’t even uncomfortable. where in mauritania are you visiting?

to be honest, at first I felt a bit "watched" but after a while it didn't feel weird at all. they were pretty intrigued that I was wandering around on my own but it wasn't like a threatening version of intrigued. everyone i interacted with was brilliant
This country is named after the Moors (Mauri) but nearly everyone I saw in the video had very dark skinned and appeared to be Sub-Saharan African. Is this what the Moors looked like or are the black people in this video descendants of people brought to Mauritania as slaves?
@Qwecy That is in the capitals Nouakchot and Nouadhibou, they come from sub-sahara countries to find work or try to go up north and can't cross the border into morocco so they get stuck in Mauritania. If you go to the interior of Mauritania, you wont see as many black people.

Mauritania seems like quite a mixed place - lots of people I met were from Gambia, Senegal, Nigeria, Cameroon etc and had travelled there for work!
