    This Alfa spider edition is the only car that introduce the 60s design to the new era of cad design of the 90s and after .A truly classic 2 seater roadster with character and style you can park it close to every car ever and design wise can be more discussable

    Good to see you making an appearance on your video Matteo , you’re definitely living the Roadster Life there my friend. You should definitely start getting from behind the camera more . The coolest guy on TH-cam with an even cooler accent 😎 it’s good to see your confidence growing as well. Your channel is certainly evolving , I can certainly see you narrating to camera in the future. I’ve always said your car stories are the best but I think you’re the biggest draw to your viewers because of your personality and knowledge. More of the same please 👍🇮🇹

      Yes, this channel will continue to evolve and I plan to appear on camera more often, yes! Actually, I wanted to do part of last week's Giulietta video that way, but I couldn't find a car on time...

    Just another reason why Pininfarina is the best design house in the world. The lines, the tweaks, the proportions, and the nod to the 164 (in my uneducated opinion, the best looking large volume production saloon ever) make this a classic before a wheel was turned.
    This also undermines my usual argument that Alfa always screw up facelifts. The exception that proves the rule?

    “It looks good on you” the nice female said to me as I was sitting in a brand new Spider at the 1992 Auto Show. Funny how you never forget an compliment from an attractive woman.
    A long time ago I read the Italians did not initially warm to the new Spider as a replacement for their beloved Giulietta, giving it the snarky nickname, “Cuttlefish.” I admit I love the curvaceous fenders of 50s-60s sports cars too. But time marches on and many cars that were initially unloved take on a new appreciation later. Ferrari 365 GTC/4 was nicknamed “clown lips.” Now they’re worth more than my house.
    I usually like the first generations of a car’s styling the best. Paradoxically they usually improve mechanically while getting uglier as the years progress. Lamborghini Countach comes to mind. But the last generation of the Alfa-Romeo Spider did look great as the nice girl noticed all those years ago.

    Congratulations Matteo. I have owned one for 15 years. I've been looking for it for two years. Strictly fourth series, 2.0 i.e. 126 CV, Rosso alfa 130, beige interior. Pininfarina design, Alfa Romeo bilabero with phase variator, ZF differential with 25% self-locking and power steering. Driving you experience sensations of other times and pleasures that today's cars, for obvious reasons, cannot offer. What more could you ask for?

    Excellent video! I have the early III series 2.0 from 1984 in 'blu celeste' for 13 years now and I have to say it has a phenomenal value for a car, many people don't like the rubber spoiler, but if you forget this you think you are in a model from the 60s. Wooden steering wheel, metal details everywhere, metal rear view mirrors, sport campagnolo wheels, speedometer and rev counter almost identical to the ones of the original Spiders, same for oil, battery and water temp indicator. And of course, the sound of the double Solex carburetors. No power steering, so trying to park builds muscles ;) Parts are easy to find and relatively cheap. Outstanding value for a classic car that you can get for even less than 10K euros!

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree with you. As I said in the video, I love all Spiders for different reasons, and an early Series III is a great choice because it's still available at very affordable prices and offers the same fantastic Alfa Spider experience of all the other models.

    Beautifully done as always. Such a pleasure to hear about a pro designer‘s view on these cars.
    As usual, I’m „adding my mustard“ (German way of expressing „making a pointless comment“): I once owned and partly restored a Coda Tronca in exactly the same colour like the one shown in the first seconds of your film, named giallo prototipo.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love that Yellow shade! It's called "Giallo Prototipo" because it came from the prototype Pininfarina made on a 33 Stradale chassis. Sadly, the paint was the only thing from that car that made production :)

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So interesting to read this. A couple of years ago I’ve searched the web for that very information, but couldn’t find an answer. My home-made hypothesis was that possibly Alfa painted all their prototypes in this colour and that the Spyder prototype looked so good that they kept it for serious production. It doesn’t make any sense at all because one puts camouflage on prototypes and not the most striking colour imaginable, but well.

      I don't barre the aerodinamica one (plastic tail), that I didn't like at its age but that now I prefer to the last out of look modernized one.
      The aerodinamica series were 2, the first one still wore that unsurpassed dashboard with two separate boobs, while the body of the car still didn't have the funny miniskirts.

    I thought this was an excellent styling modernisation on an old theme but I was disappointed that they did not include the Twin Spark engine from the Alfa Romeo 75 which would have really given the car a performance boost, but engine presumably did not fit in due to the lower bonnet line in the Spider. Love the video .

    I have a white 91 spider and it isn't fast. It is such a great car in ways that show that it wasn't always about horsepower.
    A classic motor through the countryside should be light,breezy, effortless and serene while smoothly flowing into crisp and lively spirited driving mode on demand.
    Many modern sports cars that are blazing fast have firm track suspension,firmer seats,power by the bucket full and exhaust like dual garbage disposals gargling firecrackers. That's where performance lies but not the magic carpet ride.
    I've been trying to sell my Alfa for years. Even posted the ad and when I looked at the pictures I couldn't deny that I had something very special and I deleted the ad.

    Thanks for this splendid video, as well. Yes, it's me again - from earlier this day, watching your exellent video - about the GTVs. Now I, almost shamefully, must admit, that I also own a Spider Veloce 1750 (Duetto) from 1969. I bought it from a lady in California, who owned it for 30 years, - before I took it to Denmark. It is also totally original - but not quite as 110% as my GTV. I joined the big "raduno" in 2010 in Milano - in this car. It was a fantastic event.
    No worries now, - I haven't got any more Alfa's in my garage - if you should make more videos 😁👍 Where are you at home? In case I will be in the neighbourhood in one of the old Alfas next year ? Kind regards, Bo - Denmark

    My very first Alfa was an '83 Spider that though it was a disaster of a badly repaired front end and the last owner's ham fisted mechanical work I've always wanted it back. It had a few updates from the original. But, as you say had the original carburetor set up and the few times I was able to use it before the problems the gearbox presented forced me to send the car off to a new owner allowed me to see why it was sold in such a fan based way. It's not perfect. But, in the way a spouse or family member never is that only made you partake in what was all the more. I'm too tall for an MX-5 and that means British roadsters simply won't work. This car does.

    I have never seen a series 4 spider, don't think they ever made it to Australia. Which is a shame, as the 164 did make it in before Alfa disappeared here until the 156 appeared in the late '90s. It is beautiful. It almost looks a little like the way the original might be "re-imagined" today (minus the 90s tail lights) if Alfa were to go down the current Fiat 500 route of retro design.

    • @Matteo_Licata

    I've owned every 105 spider at one time or another. The s4 was a great re-do but interior room was compromised in the US versions because of the added trim added at the bottom of the dash on both sides. If you are 6'0 or taller, go for the s1-s3 series.

    Every generation of this car brings a smile... Even a tired, rusting S3 with a black rubber boot spoiler and a torn roof. It is a car for smiles.
    Few cars could elegantly bridge the transition from steel to polycarbonate bumpers and make both appear intentional from the first sketch.
    I have to agree about the bitty and slightly shitty interior... But I file that under "character". At that time in the early 90s the whole "Teutonic superiority" thing was producing dull cars with dull interiors and too much ergonomic/designer blandness.
    I quite like a car whose dash says "This is the fan switch. I don't know why it is here. It probably works. If not, push harder".
    With early cars now too cherished and too precious, these final few are somehow the best we can see. And they still bring a smile.

    $25,000 is average price of nice low mile 5spd S4. Gen S1 full restoration bring well over $30k

    Where does the "Spider" name come from? It is weird to say the least.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Like many automotive bodystyles terms, it comes from a type of horsedrawn carriage, particularly light and open, with four big wheels making the body look small. Its passing resemblance with a spider led people to call such carriages that way.

      @@Matteo_Licata Thanks. Now I remember seeing those in pictures and films. Never knew they were called spiders.

    Im planing to buy an alfa spider definitely ,but cant make up my mind should i look for series 4 ,or series 3 qv or series 2 veloce 2000 ,they are all beautiful .
    Series 2 is definitely more retro ,and series 4 has the nicest rear but it look more modern. Series 3 is maybe the worst of 3 but it has cloverleaf .
    Damn Italians ,what are they doing to me 😂

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a lovely choice to make, and you'd have a lovely car whichever you choose from the trio.
      A series 2 2000cc will have the nicest interior, the rasp from the carburetors means it sounds better... And it's arguably the best looking if you ask me. Meanwhile, choosing between an S3 Cloverleaf and an S4 2.0 is more about looks than anything else, as the two are pretty damn much the same car underneath. Even wheel size is the same. My personal advice to pick between these two is to buy on condition. If the S3 Cloverleaf you've found is in better nick than any S4 you've found, get the S3.

    • @jankostojanovic1653
      @jankostojanovic1653 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Matteo_Licata You are absolutely right ,series 2 is a true odltimer ,3 and 4 don't have the looks as the 2 and the 1 .And the sound too.
      But the prices are crazy ,even if a save 20 thousand euros i still can't find a good series 2 without having to invest 10 thousand more .
      Il probably have to pick between 3 and 4 ,and if I'm lucky to get a solid one for that amount of money ,a good spider is really hard to find .
      It could take a year or two to find a really nice one that is totally original ,thats also a problem with a spider 2 ,newer cars like the 3 and 4 are more likely to be 100 percent original .

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jankostojanovic1653 Yes, with series 3 and 4 cars it's still possible to find cars that have been never taken apart and preserved in mostly original condition. Earlier Spiders are very likely to have been restored already, and it's important to evaluate the quality of the body repairs that's certainly been performed. I've personally seen a S2 spider that hid all kinds of sins under the shiny paint.
