    2:42 to 3:10 about Roman soldiers giving Jesus something to drink, nope, they certainly did _not_ want to, as you put it, lessen his misery, on the contrary, they gave him posca … with a sponge on a stick. Which was the very tool people used what we use toilet paper for today. And do not forget the tag on his cross, the infamous INRI, for “Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews”, so you have to envision this: They gave a drink of the low classes to somebody they mocked as “king”, and of all things, on a device used to clean yourself after defecation. Combine this with the other things they did to him (like the crown of thorns), and you get a sense that they just humiliated Jesus Christ as much as they possibly could. I guess some low quality posca was just something they had at hand, so they used that.

      I was catholik and study my religion and Jesus was not killed and he was not the last prophet of God but the last prophet is Muhammad and is vriten on the Kuran than Jesus is not deat but Allah the only true God saved him and his mother and after the coming of the false mesiah Allah will bring back Jesus the true Mesiah to kill the false mesiah and at that day Jesus will tell the truth to all who folloved the false mesiah but not believed on the God of Jesus Allah the only true God worthy of worshiping he has no wife or sons or parents he was not born o created by anyone but inded he is Allah who createn anything you se or that wich you dont see.

    In some dialects of northern Italy the term puska has remained to indicate a drink. It is the wine that is obtained by throwing water on the lees after pressing. It reaches a maximum of 5 degrees and is acidic and slightly fizzy. Nowadays few produce it because no one likes it. The mixture of water and vinegar has always been used in the summer by workers in the fields because it is thirst-quenching and the water is made drinkable. A few drops were used and sometimes a vinegar flavored with herbs. Today everyone is on tractors with air conditioning and drinking Coca Cola

    Excellent going here! Not enough people know about Posca. It is also a nice precaution for questionable water sources, where they say: "DON'T DRINK THE WATER!"
    Speaking from experience... I would do it (is how I do it) by mixing the herbs into the vinegar to soak for at least a number of days for the vinegar to absorb the tastes. Then this is mixed in water for the posca, or even used as a condiment with meals.

      This was prefabbed but it makes little sense as a disinfectant unless it was transported in a concentrated form then diluted with water prior to use as it would have to have a high ratio to be usable as a disinfectant way too high imo to drink quantities of. The honey also in concentrated form is antibacterial but as soon as it is diluted it looses those properties.. it just makes more sense to transport in concentrated form and mix it up prior to use.

    Great video, as usual! I like that you actually tried making it yourself rather than just discussing it.
    If you're interested in suggestions, I'd like to see some Egyptian topics, especially the everyday people, what they ate, what they wore, or how they were paid in bread and beer. Medieval history will always hook me in too. Serfdom, farming tools, living conditions, honestly anything like that! The working class are just as interesting to me as the elites

    A simple and healthful drink is water, a bit of non-distilled apple cider vinegar, and some sweetener. It gives a good boost, and is fairly economical to prepare. I've noticed that adding ginger, turmeric, and black pepper helps with inflammation as well, and the taste is not really that objectionable, but it is not fantastic. Cinnamon and/or ginger is actually quite good with the sweetener and water. Just a wee tip. Nice video, and I like your "pinch of history" gaff. I thought it was humorous. Very informative video! Thanks for sharing!

    I have been tweaking my own posca, 3 parts water one part red wine vinegar, 1/4 cup sugar, a lime wedge, orange slices with peels, small half tsp of soy sauce, one anise star , two cloves. Shake well, refrigerate over night. Filter/ strain as desired.

      @@DieLuftwaffel I can't remember why I used it. Maybe to offset the other flavors I added. Or to add sodium/salts as I rarely have salt in my house lol.

    A few tablespoons of honey is very nice in posca, I use , wine vinegar, honey, sometimes I make a tea of hibiscus into which I put Bay leaves and ginger but usually only water, vinegar, honey and lemon juice.

    I make mine with Water, White Vinegar (because it's what I have), Honey, & Nutmeg or Cinnamon.

    Since i came about Posca i drink it regularly. It is the kind of drink you have "to get used to". But If you for example like Salat dressings with yeast and oil, you will get to it fairly quickly.
    I read in the Internet that a good ratio is about 5 parts Water, 1 part yeast.
    Also i tried mixing honey in it. Works really well. You can drink it at any temperature, but i like it the most when its cooled or room temperature.
    Its really simple, yet genius. Its not bad for your stomach, since it just has the sourness of the yeast which is somewhat similar to your stomach acid taht is there anyway.
    I love posca and im glad to have encountered it.

    Another interesting video. For the past year I've been making an after-dinner drink of 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon lemon juice added to a 16 ounce mug of sparkling water. It is quite refreshing. Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Berg have videos discussing its health benefits. Studies show that drinking vinegar water after a meal reduces the blood sugar spike but they don't know why yet.

      Also it will low the ph of your stomach, and that will help with the digestion if you have an excessive alcaline stomch acid

    Greek, and Roman wine was already somewhere between wine, and vinegar since they didn’t have anything close to the wine making techniques the French later innovated. But, the Romans would sometimes toast some barley or pine nuts, and strain the wine through it to filter out the more vinegary notes. So, they probably did the same with posca. I’d be surprised if they also didn’t mix in a little honey to counter the vinegar.

      @@APinchOfHistory history of soap? how did people wash their heavy woolen clothes (and themselves) in cold northern europe? 25 years ago when I was a young person, we were always told that our european ancestors were filthy and never washed until the industrial revolution, but this is not true.

    I know how to make this but is not cold drink ,my grand mother made it often ! Set water on fire then u put whole dry chillies in to boil then coriander and black pepper (not crush it) then garlic and salt then vinegar but allways when added small portion and take to taste added untill is good for drink also u can add olive oil and eat with bread , cocked until dry chillie become soft and relise theyr sap !

    Being that the Romans didn't have Sugar; as a sweetener besides Honey, try some pure Apple or Grape Juice, or crushed/mashed Friut itself !

    You think it’s an ancient drink? Maybe you lived in the city your whole life? I can go, right now, to my farm stand and get cider with vinegar. In Maine, in a little old fashioned restaurant they served a ‘folk’ drink called thrush, blackberry juice with water and vinegar. Wasn’t coriander a bit costly or did they import seeds and grow it? Vinegar is a digestive aid.

      As I said in the video, herbs probably varied according to the region. You would add what you have in your area. I live in a rather smaller town, this video was recorded close to my house if you're interested :)
      Now, it is not an either-or situation. The fact that you can get it in ypur farm stand doesn't mean it was an ancient drink too. That's cool btw that you can still get it, because for example here in Poland isn't popular even in the countryside.

    the end was funny. I think I added too much vinegar... I think it would be my drink of choice on ancient campaigns. Honestly the ratio should be looked up as even at 1 to 15 parts the taste of red wine vinegar is still very noticable that is maybe 0.4% acetic acid. However in comparing this with Kombucha it has about the same profile. Something that should be looked at in more detail. I plan on looking for the ancient composition but I suspect that for this to actually be antiseptic or antibacterial it would need to be stronger acid content, the acid content vinegar content probably has to be quite high for it to cleanse the water, I also wonder if this ratio is the same as they would use for their sponge water for sanitary use. This is something I am currently researching a bit. The plain dilution actually had me think of using pickle juice for sports hydration and would ofset the stomach and lactic acid buildup in endurance activities. Jogging a bit this morning I found that I had a lot more energy to start the day with drinking this instead of my second cup of coffee. None the less the red wine vinegar also has antioxidants and resirvitol as Red wine does and other beneficial elements. Something to look into more for sure.

    I always add too much vinegar.
    The trick is to put 1/3 of vinegar and 2/3 of water.

      Yeah, I think you can also aquire the taste after some time, but I added just a bit too much as for the first time. It tasted interesting though!

    Jesus actually told the soldiers he thirsted, they then raised it on a sponge and pressed it to his lips. It is important to note that he did not swallow it in order to fulfill his word and the prophecy of Isaiah. He then gave his last breath marking the finished prophecy and with His death.

    If you use balsamic vinegar , it might taste pretty good , depending . I have tasted some from Italy , and they were almost like a desert , some not so much .

      I found your channel searching for a video about Roman wax tablets … and was stunned about the quality. And, to be honest, this video is, as far as I can judge, perfect, you use music, but you use it correctly, you do _not_ pester us with a “copy and paste standard intro” as many very big channels in fact do, you seem to be a little insecure when talking to the camera, but this will pass, but, after all, nope, nothing to worry about, in fact, I hope that this is one of those channels where people like me will later brag that I was subscribed to A Pinch Of History before it was cool 😉 With other words: Well done, continue.
