      Yup. The "on-lays" slapped on there shows a complete lack of creativity. It's like "Hey, I got some left over slivers of micarta. I think I'll stick them to the sides of this pocket knife."

      lol $500 for a plain knife to cut things with that even overpriced $200 knives can do a much better job of. No one's arguing that these Sebenzas are bad knives, or that CR doesn't know how to design knives. We're arguing these are not worth the price point they're asking for in this free-market, competitive captialism society. Things have changed, designs have improved, new materials have come out, manufactuering techs have improved tremendously. This ain't 1999 anymore. CRK is living off its pre-21st century hype, off of its name branding. Sort of like what all the obnoxiously-expensive handbags and clothing item brands are doing, to a smaller extent. But that's to be expected because knives market is magnitudes smaller than the clothing fashion industry.

    I have titanium knives without inserts as well. You are right, when it is done properly there is no problem with the lockbar arm meeting the blade without a steel insert.

  • @dooshlerd
    @dooshlerd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The steel insert is actually a better design. It allows a worn or damaged lock to be replaced without replacing the lock side or rework it. Easier to maintenance, easier to fix if out of spec.
    As for the pivot, a captive bushing is uncommon but not on just $500 knives. The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 and Manix 2 both have a bushing pivot and buttery smooth action (not every Paramilitary has no lateral play, but I haven't seen a Manix with a lick of it).

    I owned one for a year and it is a respectable knife. I get the craftsmanship and feel of the knife, but I almost didn’t even want to use it. Whether the price is worth it or not, I find that you can get a lot more value these days. Especially with more up to date technology.

      Russel B. Why is it worth $500? It’s a titanium frame lock. It’s not rare as a titanium frame lock or a CRK Sebenza. They are everywhere. The blade steel isn’t some space age unattainable metal. The grind isn’t some proprietary grind no one else does. It come sharp but can be much sharper. It’s a $2-300 knife max.

    This video is two years old, and much has changed regarding knife making technology & cost. But I believe that CRK's, Emersons, ZT, and some others are coasting on the technology of the late 1990's. China is producing top of the line knives at much lower prices (WE, Kizer, etc.) and manufacturers in the USA are taking advantage of that (called capitalism). If CRK'S does not come up with new designs & better prices, then they might stay in business as a niche market supplier, but they are about to lose their position of emmenance.
    I am not a hater of Chris Reeve or Emerson knives, it is just the times they are a'changing.

    Got a beautiful 2015 large sebenza 21 with unique graphics, polished titanium, tiger's eye inlay yesterday in like new condition. My first crk. Disassembled, cleaned, greased, and reassembled today. I think this is where people who say these knives are hype and overpriced don't realize why they have the reputation they do. The fitment of the spacers, pins, and screws is miles above any benchmade, spyderco, zt, etc. Put the knife back together and there's no need to play with pivot tension. Zero blade play, blade perfectly centered. Exacting craftsmanship. Been waiting on a new umnumzaan almost six months and now am even more stoked to get it. When you factor in their warranty, the fact you can send it in for a spa treatment and have it refurbished to like new condition, is part of the cost. High end knife and high end customer service. This is my way of trying to explain the action on the sebenza compared to a drop shut folder. A drop shut action is glass like. You don't feel it. The blade just drops, say like a pm2. With the sebenza, you feel the smoothness. I call it a gliding action. Theres no resistance, the entire distance from closed to open and vice versa is a consistent, smooth glide. The lockup?
    Ridiculously solid. I feel like I've taken the next step in my knife collecting hobby after about three years into it. I feel proud to finally own a Chris Reeve knife. This one will not be a user.
    It's a work of mechanical art. I've shown it to a few non-knife people and even they are impressed. A lot of WOW's!!!! So this sebenza will be a safe queen. The umnumzaan will get used as it's a regular model. Now I'm looking at Hinderers, Striders, and the like. Quality over quantity.

    Great vid. I got my first Seb this week. My thumb ached like all hell for the first few days getting used to closing it - getting the technique right to push that damn stiff lock bar. Now I've got it ... comes natural, and with the right technique that lock bar's now my mighty friend. Love it as a general edc over my Benchmade & Spydies, and maybe even Al Mar. Anyone that only wants functionality should not bother with Sebenza, but if you also appreciate engineered craftmanship in a no-bullshit knife then hey, look no further. Mall Ninjas need not apply.

    I have owned 4 CRK folders, and none have had any trouble, none. They also have good resale. Wish I would have kept them all, now all I have is a 2009 Umnumzan, (old pivot). Like it a lot! Love the click noise...Chris used to heat treat w/ flame each lock. Saw it w/ my own eyes...

    Meh. I suppose some of these knives may be "worth" their pricetag based on them being made by a special person. In that sense, they are more like a work of art. As we all know, art is worth whatever a person is willing to pay. As a tool, as a knife, I believe the value of knives do have an upper plateau. Anything above that plateau is based on artistic value and collectability. What I mean is, at some point, the best materials have been paid for and the labor to manufacture has been paid for. Factor in a reasonable profit margin and you have the maximum value of a knife. Unless you start inlaying things like gold and/or rare gems... The steel, the handle materials, and the craftsmanship are only worth so much. I recently purchased a Benchmade with a carbon fiber handle and M4 blade steel. I paid $250. I don't think knives are worth much more than that. Micarta isn't worth more than carbon fiber. Maybe some other steels are worth more, but you get the idea.

    The problem when carborizing lock bars is something called Alpha Scale. You will get it eventually. Elliot form Ferrum Forge went over it in one of his videos. Titanium does and will loose the battle versus steel. And the fact that these knives have such late lockup only reinforces how bad late lockup is. When you have early lockup, you have that extra room for the titanium to settle. When you have late lockup, that titanium will eventually settle close to the presentation side, horrible.

    • @miked6367
      @miked6367 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      BigThumpr1 100% lockup only makes a frame lock more secure. Yeah it bruises your ego about the "early lockup" bullshit fad. But, that tiny bit of vertical play you'd have from it hitting the presentation scale still wont cause negative function. 1mm of blade play vertically has zero impact on knife use. The further the bar is over the safer it is in use. Im a triad lock guy, but still what im saying is true regarding frame locks.

      BigThumpr1 don't be ignorant. I don't care if you shit knives for a living, simple mechanical facts are just facts. 100% lockup on a frame lock is always more secure against closing on you than 20, 30, 40 or 50%. Will it bug you that you might have slight lock rock or vertical play? Possibly, but dont talk bullshit to me about lockup mate, I've been in this game forever. Anything less than a Triad lock by Demko or a fixed blade is a weak lock anyway. Lockup and frame lock geometry facts are plain and simple.

    People get so in over their heads over the "hard use" mentality. Back when I was much more into knives, I used to have a few Sebenzas and an Umnumzaan in my rotation working in military law enforcement and it did everything I ever needed a knife to do, same as my SMFs or ZTs. And it cut better. I've recently revisited the hobby and have an XM-18 en route and will be getting a large Inkosi with the natural micarta and they'll be here to stay.

They don't put out lemons, period. Another thing you get with crk is the abilitity to take down and clean/ maintain your knife, and it will go back together exactly the same every single time. it's simple, classic design.

    Just great, now you have me wanting to save up for a Sebenza! I just bought a 940-2 and couple of weeks before that a Sage 5. Not to mention I've been really wanting a Slysz bowie too. Guess I'll be working overtime?

    or if you could get the triad lock on the sebenza or even the axis lock .if you hard use this knife its done .if it had what the hype says then it would be worth maybe $100 .

    @ryanschuckel3419 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The sebenza is the original frame lock that all other have been judged by, They are amazing knives, It is pocket jewelry and yes, they are expensive(overpriced) . They do hold value more that most production knives, so you wont lose out too much if you resale. CRK is a name that earned it way to its price range, Just like in the watch and gun world. it stinks that they are so much and I still haven't had the capitol and justification to buy one.

  • @ericthorpe5670

    It's not worth $510. It's worth whatever people are willing to pay for it.

  • @sahipkran9447

    Why is it worth 500 dollars? Because there are dumb people buying it

  • @aceofspades856
    @aceofspades856 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I buy knives that I can edc and use. I would NEVER edc a $510 knife, or use it at work. This is a knife that would stay in a display case, and as such I would never buy it.

    • @JohnBarrow1961
      @JohnBarrow1961 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then that's your loss. Sebenza's and other CRK knives beg to be used. There's nothing ornate about them and nothing about them that screams, "Safe queen!" They are strictly about the work. You'd know that if you'd ever handled one.

  • @dalecarpenter8828
    @dalecarpenter8828 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    If some one was a fanatic collector .if some one wanted this knife for a long time .if some one had so much money that the insane price was nothing to them .if you just like it .yeah but it isn't better than many many other knives .the pivot is smooth get over it .
    I would pay more for a knife that had say a triad lock with a sabenza21 (the 21 one because they change the 25s pivot ) g10 with partial steel liners only around the lock up .less than .5" with 4" d2 sabenza 25 blade and modified recon 1 handle and bearings .then i would feel good about paying even $250.00

  • @brandont9071

    Its all about if it is worth it to you or not. Everyone is different, if its not for you dont buy it dont hate on it. Be happy with your cheaper options etc. If you like it, like it and dont talk down on people who like cheaper options. I think knife worth is so subjective rather than objective and beauty in the eye of the beholder, pride of ownership can be for any knife, not every knife is for everybody

    It's worth $500 because it has "tight tolerances"? I don't buy that reasoning...there are much cheaper knives that have tight tolerances, and made from the same materials or better. CRK says flicking your Sabenza can cause damage....maybe they should use a steel lock bar insert. CRK fans are delusional. I would spend $500 on a knife, but not a bland, overpriced Sabenza.

    Reate, WeKnives, TwoSun, Rike Knives, and Kizer. Much more bang for the buck. I buy knives in the $50-$250 range from them, and they shit on any Sebenza. 500 bucks for a knife without a lockbar stopper or insert, without custom hardware or complex milling or even a nice ceramic ballbearing system to open close ? Stop overpaying. This guy keeps pointing out shit on his Sebenza that you can see on a 50 dollar knife, and making believe its fucking amazing, hes delusional.

    Just more proof there is a ass for every seat. It's really funny how guys that spend $400 or more on a 35 year old design. Need someone to cosign they are worth it.
    Nothing about those knives are worth the outrageous price. But if it makes you happy then that's nice. The truth is nothing about those are hard use. Also the one I had was heat treated soft. That's when I contacted the great CRK they said it was so it was easier to sharpen.
