    Making fancy floorplans for role play games can be rewarding, and it can be time-consuming and unnecessary. Here, I show you some high-end stuff and warn you about it, and propose some compromises: one for adventures set in caverns (or, I suppose, narrow ravines), and one for those armed with a printer.
    I'm afraid that the prize draw mentioned at the end has now happened. You are too late.

    Considering lindy is a fan of tabletop games and models, I wonder if he has an opinion of WH40k. I doubt he does, but it'd be really funny if he had a custom space marine legion akin to the Angry Marines or the Flesh Helms.

      +SpitshineSneakers If he does, I imagine he prefers 1st, maybe 2nd edition with its greater emphasis on DIY and less grim-dark. I warrant he'd prefer Imperial Guard or Orks to Spess Muhreens

      Ben Kirkby True. IG probably plays fairly close to that Crossfire game he plays. I mainly pointed out the marines because they're easier to customize without having to make totally new models.

      +SpitshineSneakers It is a way of selling expensive figures. I'm not a fan. The games tend to lack tactical skill, and the winner is usually the one with the biggest guns. Dense formations of men with very powerful weaponry stand in the open and shoot each other. The winning side usually suffers horrendous unsustainable casualties.

    I love watching these older videos. Reminds me of that time he was talking about, when everything was made of wood, or paper, or cheap metal, which was usually dangerously unfinished, with sharp edges and corners, and often had many choking hazards for the little ones. And all for mere pennies! Ah, the good old days!

    Are fancy floorplans and models the "Gameplay vs Graphics" of the desktop RPG world?

    • @WhatIsSanity
      @WhatIsSanity 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Longboard Technology I think so.

    • @bravesirkevin
      @bravesirkevin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Longboard Technology I"d say it's sometimes exactly like that. Some people think nice looking tables are the best. Some think they're completely unnecessary and detrimental.
      Other times it's more like the modding scene... it's a whole separate hobby tied to the main hobby, that's just as satisfying, and when done right definitely helps to enhance the experience of playing the game.

    • @WhatIsSanity
      @WhatIsSanity 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @bravesirkevin

      Luke DS
      Yeah, though it really comes down to the kind of game being played. One with a heavy focus on story is hindered by all sorts of terrain as it narrows down the possibilities dramatically... There are loads of places where you're a lot better off relying on imagination than having a fully decked out doll's house. In that case the graphics vs gameplay argument is totally valid.
      On the other hand, a game focused on strategy and tactics might benefit incredibly from having a nice variety of good terrain... Having an interesting battleground that is full of things you can work with to your advantage and challenging terrain that you have to deal with is something that a lot of players really enjoy, and it's that group that this sort of thing works for. In this case the 3d environment is actually enhancing the gameplay as well as making things look prettier.
      Within DnD you're likely to encounter both types of gameplay, so the value of things like this depends on the group and how they like to play the game.

    I have one word that handles much of this....DOMINOES. Handles all shapes and sizes of dungeons, doors, caverns, outdoor settings, trees, and actually horses as well. Oh, and use the dominoes for scaling for distances, movement and the like. 1 domino = 10 feet or 2 yards, etc., etc., etc. Changes instantly for new situations.

Looking at the world behind you I see towers, monuments with possible machinery involved - a puzzle to be solved perhaps, craggy mountainsides, a treacherous jungle-like plain with a building next to a mysterious giant archway. And dark caverns everywhere leading to who knows where... What a wondrous land to explore!

    I once made a WW1 trench system for my nephew who needed it for a school presentation. Pilbox positions, sleeping quarters and the whole shebang. Foam, covered in wallplaster and wood. The paint used was natural colors mixed with sand to get it grainy. Sadly I forgot to take a picture of it prior me giving it to my nephew. He threw it away after the school presentation. I guess he did not realize it took me two weeks to build. :D

    My favorite solution is using one of those plastic, gridded surfaces that you can use dry erase markers on. You can draw on it. It's great for using mini's on. The players and you can jot notes on it. It works really well and it's useful in many ways because you can use multiple ink colors to highlight different things.

    I don't really like to compete in such things but this sounds like an amazing way to make in the real world visual aids for my writing, I often end up completely lost in 3D space since I have no sense of orientation whatsoever except "What direction Point A is in" which I have to keep track of consciously so this paper style would be pretty useful! When me and my friends roleplay (WFRP), we usually use verbal descriptions only, with a quickly scribbled map of the surroundings now and then (usually for large scale - to show paths, roads and natural obstacles between towns). This is especially convenient because our sessions are often focused on traveling, so we change locations a lot.

    Back in the day my buddy had those Prince August floorplan molds, and I made a bunch of walls. Enough to make a small keep with sheer cliff walls and a tall tower. Never used it for anything though, and as it turned out, the 4-5 level tower was so tall that most Warhammer spells couldn't reach the ground. So much for having a battle wizard in there...

    Most of the DMs nowadays use this plastic grid sheet along with water-based colored markers to rapidly sketch out a building, or an outdoor area, and the grid pattern is permanent. It's not as colorful as yours, but much quicker to alter to different surroundings.

      for minecraft it's easy because each square is 1 meter. as for the skyrim cave/dungeon/ruin etc, it's a bit more difficult. that's when the grid paper comes in handy.
      I prefer to create dungeons and towns from scratch. however when pressed for time I use the skyrim strategy guides maps for reference. towns and homesteads don't require a grid unless a fight breaks out.
      we don't just use skyrim or minecraft either. Several of our passed dungeons were based off of many other games novels and even movies.
      such as zelda. the sword of truth series by terry goodkind, and Dune the motion picture (emperors throne room).

    You might want to take a look at some of the variants of DMScotty's 2.5D work.
    Easy way that I've found is to get an old wood burning stylus, 2.5 inch plywood squares (I use Woodcrafter), and craft sticks. The up of the grid to 1.25" makes it easier to deal with and allows walls to work right if you use older maps (where walls were just lines on a grid that couldn't be crossed, perhaps a bit thicker there, Wyloch has videos that explain it better there).
    Take a pencil and mark the grid lines on the that gives you 4 spaces per tile. Any tile that would have a wall (or walls) has the craft sticks glued onto the on those edges (which reduces the squares on those sides slightly, but keeps them at 1" which still fits most standard miniature base sizes for normal characters in the 25-32mm range).
    Use the stylus to burn in the stonework, both for the walls and the floor, starting with the grid lines. Then prime, paint, & seal...

    We use lego. You can customize your characters, swap weapons etc. You can also build up props or just put lego bricks in the shape of your dungeon. We use a grid. We have drawn a grid on a 48x48 grey lego baseplate (with a pencil so you can get it off). Works like a charm. :)

    Tipp for the Wall things.
    If you cast them - put some small Rare-Earth Magnets into the cast. To keep them im Place while the Resin hardens out you can use Magnets from the outside of the Mold to keep them to a certain height.
    That way the Parts will hook easily. Only Problem would be to cast them with the right polar-direction - so that the Walls later dont shove each other away ^^
    For a Solid Gorund you can use a Steelplate and then just tuck everything on it by magic :D

    Rather then a cloth sheet I use a "Battlemat" which is a sheet of vinyl printed to look like aged paper with brown 1" grid squares. The vinyl can be drawn on with markers and easily erased and the squares are large enough for D&D miniatures to be used on it. We also have standalone 3d elements such as doors and things but they're never used, we just tend to draw stuff on it in different colors

  • @jacobstaten2366

    I was working on an idea that involved 1:64 scale, (Hot Wheels and model train scale) miniatures and sets. Range would be measured with lengths of string attached to an icon. This way you could use existing models, train sets, and toys (say from a rummage sale) as props.
    For exampleample, you want your character to fire a rifle. You would have a string attached to a small toy rifle (as an icon) and you would put one end of the string next to your character and extend the other end in the direction of your target. Of you have string enough to reach your target or past, you are in range. If there are objects in the the way, subtract a penalty. If you wanted to get elaborate, you could color the string for long and short distances if it affects the stats. Walking or running distance could use a tiny toy shoe attached to a string the same way, and could bend around corners with your path.

    Thankfully I live in an area of varied Topography, meaning I can Acquire essentially any rock types my heart could desire for molds(or skip the middle man and just use the rocks). Having Actual resources saves a lot of the trouble of painting and gluing and all that jazz.

    Hey Lindy .I've been watching your videos for a while now and i think it would be a great and wild idea for you to try to get BBC involved in creating a television program where you be the host and talk about the realities about actual warfare vs the movies.

    Instead of marking a grid you can use a fabric/seamstress tape measure. It is floppy so you can wrap it around obstacles to check movement speed or hold it taught to verify missile ranges. Even better if players don't get one and micro optimize their turns and the GM only uses it if he feels like verifying if a player can do whatever.
    Grid systems are usually 1" in burger land so that's pretty handy with a tape measure that uses inches. Oh, my rifle shoot 50" at +1? *zip* And they got the center button to push to suck all the tape back in.

    Oi, lindy, if this was a sponsored video and not just you having a giggle with your own competition, you should post a disclaimer (in the description or say so in the video) that you have been payed to do that sort of thing.

      +CZProtton Apparently it's not sponsored but yeah I get you, it was really ad-ish. I think part of that was because he's just enthusiastic about what he does, so even when he's promoting someone elses' stuff he sounds like a used car salesman. XD

      +CZProtton Had I been paid, I would have, but I wasn't paid. Papercraft donated the prizes for free, and I thought that it would be nice to give them away. Possibly this might generate some on-line 'buzz' that might be good for my channel.

    You can look into DwarvenForge if you want to do this today. They're cool, but I don't really understand purchasing them for so much money and using them very few times when you could accomplish just as much in your imagination or on a sheet of grid paper.

    I made a massive Hirst Arts modular dungeon. Lloyd is right, it never gets used. I love it, and everyone wants to play on it once, but after that it loses the novelty and it's a hassle to set up.

    I cut out the faffing about making models and I just use my tablet and some drawing software to represent the floor plan. The players can use the touch screen to move about and the scenery is literally anything I can find an image file of. the ruler tool of the drawing software is used to measure distances for missile weapon ranges.

    Well I did, after which I then realized, like a father waking up from a night of drinking, that I really don't have time to do what I want anymore. I'll still except it if I win. Christmas gift to a friend (who still does this stuff, ah nostalgia) since I won't be able to use them I suppose.

    So this a bit off topic but I am currently working on my own RPG game and I was wondering if anyone knows of a roleplaying system that primarily focuses on percent chance? Also I've been looking for people to take a couple looks at it for some critical advice so if you're curious just give me a reply.

    What rpg systems you use? That do not require grid and all? (though I have never played RPG on tabletop)
    Also tagental question, do you play other kinds of board games (besides RPG and "wargames"), like more traditional (say go, chess) or modern commercial games (powergrid maybe?), or "indy-ish" "un-comercializable" abstracts (hex, havannah)? Though somehow I'm strongly inclined to guess no?:).

    • @Julian_The_Apostate
      @Julian_The_Apostate 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +morphles Almost no games that aren't dedicated skirmish games 'require' a grid. Yeah they help make outcomes more exact and easily to replicate but the point of a tabletop RPG is to have fun and tell a story not niggle about with details like whether or not that Orc is one foot out of range for your Magic Missile.

    • @lindybeige
      @lindybeige  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +morphles I play loads of games, such as the German-style board games, table-top wargames, RPGs (whatever is being run).
