  • On 31 May 1979, ITN spoke to Elton John about his eight-day tour of the Soviet Union. Upon returning to Heathrow airport, John told his fans he'd enjoyed himself so much in Russia he'd like to go back. However, ITN's John Suchet suspected that Elton, who was at the time chairman of Watford FC, had an ulterior motive for going behind the iron curtain...
Elton John is to play a headlining slot at the 2023 Glastonbury Festival, taking to the Pyramid Stage on Sunday 25th June. The pop-rock icon is said to be bringing out four special guests - one of them rumoured to be a Hollywood star - during what John has called a "brand new show" put together especially for the festival. The appearance at Worthy Farm will, in theory, be one of his last, with the singer-songwriter due to retire next month. Having announced plans to retire a number of times since 1984, who knows how long he'll be able to stay away from the stage.

Wonderful. A groundbreaking tour then. Music crosses divides.

Elton apparently did not consider the possibility that, as a famous foreigner on a rare sojourn behind the iron curtain, he just might be treated a little better by the publicity conscious Soviet authorities than the average citizen!
But no, because _he_ had a positive experience he casually ascribes tales of Soviet oppression (of which were often authored by Soviet citizens from harrowing personal experiences) to western ‘propaganda’. 😩
