You could have tried flipping the rocket engine upside down. We know that it's thrust isn't quite in the center of the block. Just a tiny bit of lift could have reduced the friction with the ground. Maybe the 5 piece design at 10:17 would have worked that way.
I only have hope for this idea if it allows you to set one of the gimbals to push downwards (which judging from his experiments with 50kg weights is should). Similarly, if a small propeller can lift it, then you could have the small propeller for up and down, and a gimbal for downwards (and for attaching the nose cone). Then again, 5 is still an improvement! So 1 gimbal on the nose for down (centered), 1 gimbal on the nose for up, nose cone over both, and a small propeller or space thruster (or whatever is most powerful under 19kg) on the back to assist with both. In fact, with the 2 gimbal 1 small propeller variant, you'll probably want the back position for the "up" gimbal. The small propeller is 3kg heavier and every bit of stabilization will count.
Two 4x1 wedges in front, standard seat, and then on the lower 2 rear blocks of the seat a space thruster and a dragon jet on the top 2 rear blocks of the seat, and then another dragon jet stuck to the bottom of the first dragon jet. (Similar to the 7:56 version, but it saves the 1x2x4 and the flat connector). It would *equal the rocket engine build, at 6 blocks.* *.....BUT:* You might be able to use that same setup with only two engines if you used a RAW jet plus another thruster (space thruster/ dragon jet/ second RAW jet). I don't have _much_ hope, but it's worth trying.
You could try 3 propellers & a cockpit! 3 propellers on the back, cockpit on the front (if you want you can add a cone for 5 blocks, but i think it's doable with 4)

So here's an angle you never approached and it's rarely ever considered because of how bizarre and difficult it is to make work. You're trying to break the sound barrier going in a straight line. Loops is another form of travel. I think it'd be fair to not count the structure and foundation needed for the contraption and instead counted the actual parts that move because it's not the entire thing that's breaking the sound barrier, it's the thing you've built to utilize the rig that's doing it. You're essentially turning a limited straight line course into an infinite left or right turn or a flip. I think that's a fair way to go about it, but someone else can pass judgement on that.

4 parts idea, use diving bell or spaceship cockpit since they have a 4by4 hitbox and use the 2 by 4 by 2 rounded corners on the front to get decent aerodynamics, they are worse than 4 by 1 wedges for aerodynamics, but maybe still good enough to get to sound barrier with the rocket engine, since you were going at 1400km/h at the end with the 4 by 1 wedges and sound barrier is around 1234 km/h
I don't think anything with 4x4 "decent" aerodynamics will work. Even the version at 10:17 with only 2 blocks of the rocket engine exposed only reached 1145, and those two arrows were pretty close to the best green. [edit:] If there's any merit to your idea, then it would be to lay the standard cockpit flat on the ground, use one 2x4x2 round piece on top of it, and two 4x4x1 wedges in front of the cockpit. And you'd need to hope that the lift and downforce of the wedges and rounded piece are close enough to canceling each other.
I'd bet two space fighter cockpit, two 4x4x1s and a rocket would get you there with 5. The base aerodynamics of the space fighter cockpit are very good

I don't know if this is within the rules of the challenge. But I think a rocket thruster and a seat could work. Start in space get up to speed and then enter an atmosphere and get a sonic boom.
If you can lift yourself with props while having a rocket engine attached to the front of that last seat, it will flip once you start to go down due to the weight of the engine that you can than use to push yourself towards the ground, also reversing the props maybe?
Maybe using the setup of the spaceship cockpit and the cone on the front that you were using at the end with just a space thruster or 2 can do it. The aerodynamic profile is smaller so maybe there's a lower threshold of thrust that you need. With that you could reduse it to 4 or 3 blocks
I don't see how you'd attach 2 space thrusters with 4 blocks total. You'd need a 1*1*2 block or scaffold, which takes you to 5 blocks. Also, I think 2 dragon thrusters have a bit more thrust than 2 space thrusters.
what if he used the 6 block design, removed the wedges and added an accumulator linked to the rocket engine, then spawns it facing up, went as high as he wanted to, set the accumulator to -1, so that gravity + rocket engine = sound barrier break????
That would require adding some sort of controls to it. Or gimbals. But you'd need more than one gimbal jet to lift it, and then you need the stabilization for it too so it faces the right way on the way down... It's not gonna be enough. I wonder about a better aero seat (like the space fighter) with fewer aero blocks.

If you can lift yourself with props while having a rocket engine attached to the front of that last seat, it will flip once you start to go down due to the weight of the engine that you can than use to push yourself towards the ground, also reversing the props maybe?
what about a rocket engine with the space cockpit, that was the first thing that came to mind for me
combind the two ideas and use a gyro to point you up and then use the rocket engine to get back down , theoretical 3 parts
Maybe using the setup of the spaceship cockpit and the cone on the front that you were using at the end with just a space thruster or 2 can do it. The aerodynamic profile is smaller so maybe there's a lower threshold of thrust that you need. With that you could reduse it to 4 or 3 blocks
I don't see how you'd attach 2 space thrusters with 4 blocks total. You'd need a 1*1*2 block or scaffold, which takes you to 5 blocks.
Also, I think 2 dragon thrusters have a bit more thrust than 2 space thrusters.

That would require adding some sort of controls to it. Or gimbals. But you'd need more than one gimbal jet to lift it, and then you need the stabilization for it too so it faces the right way on the way down... It's not gonna be enough.
I wonder about a better aero seat (like the space fighter) with fewer aero blocks.

You could try only deleting one wedge on one side of the Rocket Engine Vehicle instead of both sides.
