    That weird noise was the locker popping open after the initial acceleration for the turn. Auto lockers have a "learning to drive with them" period. Once you figure it out you can avoid that from happening for the most part. If you notice how they are made the carrier pin rides in "cups" on the locker assembly. These cups with both halves together don't make a circle, but more of an oval shape. This allows the inner gear of the locker to ramp up the oval shape of the cup against the pin to force the gears together. With torque applied they will be locked unless they're broken. When little or no torque is applied then only springs hold the gears meshed. Which allows one wheel ratchet/to spin faster than the drivetrain, but it will never allow one wheel to spin slower than the drivetrain. It is best when taking off abruptly to do so in a straight line, even if it's just a couple feet, when on pavement. After gaining forward momentum then ease back the power a bit and turn normally. I give myself typically 3-4 ft before a turn in certain situations to achieve this. I have a 98 TJ sport 5 speed with front and rear Lokka lockers. For the front I recommend getting the locking hub conversion to disconnect the front when not in use if on pavement a lot. With both axles locked and the top down and doors off it's quite click-clackety lol. A thick machined aluminum diff cover/brace helps some to quiet it down, as well as thicker oil depending on your driving habits or needs.

      Yeah just put a spartan and 5.29s in my rear end and it only took about a day to figure out. It'll pop on u turns and parking but that's about it

      does this clicking and banging happen in front auto-lockers when the vehicle is in 2wd?

    • @DriftingDragon74
      @DriftingDragon74 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@djrodriguez6582 It depends... if in 2wd and your front driveshaft spins while driving then you will always hear the clicking/ratchet noise when making sharp turns. The vehicle would need to have unlockable hubs or a front axle disconnect that stops the front driveshaft from spinning for it to be completely quiet. That said though, if your front driveshaft spins while driving in 2wd and you have a lunchbox style locker then you shouldn't hear the loud bang of engagement or disengagement under load since there shouldn't be any load other than the force needed to freely spin the driveshaft and gearset, so you should only hear the slight ratcheting noise.

    the loud clang was because it was inbetween gears or spines not sure what to call them, my Detroit lockers did it all the time, completely normal. when I first heard it I thought I was losing a rear end haha

    • @Crushin_Libs
      @Crushin_Libs 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right on the money. There's a slight degree of milling to each spline, that's supposed to let the locker rotate when not under pressure. What the driver heard was either it locking or un-locking but what would of helped more than anything was video of the tires. What your vehicle is fighting is its predisposed open differential wanting the inner tire to turn faster than the outer tire and the locker (mid lock) is not allowing this to happen and that force (inner tire wanting to spin faster) is making the locker splines jump - hence the big "clang."

    • @ZX6R2KGT
      @ZX6R2KGT 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You are correct in your thinking except which tire is trying to rotate faster. The inner wheel and tire is going to rotate slower because it has a smaller distance to travel. Just think about the paths that both have to take.

    Autolockers are almost half the price of a selective diff locker, but the downside is the clicking noise when you turn. This is the locker open, avoiding the engage. Basically, think of a ratchet when you are tightening a bolt: when you twist it the opposite way of the lock, you get the open drag click. Same thing here.

  • @kolbydmc

      My locking rear diff in my '08 Silverado sometimes makes a clanging noise, especially if there's any sand or other debris on the pavement. Form what i read that diff is called an Eaton G80 and is a real locker, not a limited slip.

      most people that want to add a locker already drive a 4x4 and want more traction.
      "atrac" is stupid and a spartan locker is a "rear locker" option ....

    • @MrMrsregor
      @MrMrsregor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      sorry if i offended you, but i still stand by what i said ! maybe you are unaware of how these things work or how they differ from one another.
      you are right (if the system is functioning correctly) it is better that than a 4x4 with no lockers or traction device.
      the reason i do not like Atrac (traction control) is because it is a computer and sensor based technology and will never be a dependable or as cheap to maintain/replace as a mechanical locker and you lose 50% of your power while causing extra wear and tear to your vehicle.
      the down fall of this system is 50% of the power will go to the wheel with traction, the other 50% will be dissipated as heat in the brake of the other wheel. This is because, with the open differential, the torque is always split 50/50. To get torque (thus power) to the wheel with traction to the ground you need the same torque on the other side of the open differential to be supplied by the brake.
      This is why lockers are better. With a locker 100% of the engine power will go to traction instead of only 50% of the power being used and the other 50% being wasted in wearing down your brake pads and overheating rotors.

      So i just installed a powertrax no slip in the rear of my k2500. I don't hear any clicks or clanks at all. It drives normal. Only time I notice it if I half throttle the gas in a corner. Also something strange occurred. I could barley spin one tire with open diffs. Now I can roast the tires with 1/4 to 3/8 throttle. It made burnouts easier. It works well in a 90s k2500.

    That weird. Clank! Is something happens with my Jeep! I purchased a Jeep xj 5speed for winter driving and never paid any attention to the possibility of it having rear/ front lockers. The wheels hopped during sharp turns. Loud bang/clank from stop to go acceleration. I’ve tried to chase this sound. Thinking axle wrap I’ve installed leaf helper springs to help and didn’t hear for awhile and heard again today. I’ve changed out the whole front end suspension, fluids and gotten some body work but this sound always stood. I lifted the tires and notice both spin! Wondering how safe these lockers are for daily driving. My rear diff makes a winding noise in reverse sometimes* how are they on snow? Been hearing conflicting stories about them... will be bummed if they are a death trap considering this was suppose to be my winter daily. Also, will the wheel hop damage any diff or axle components? Should I consider doing a diff fluid change? Can I engage in 4hi with these lockers? Thanks for any answers. I’m brand new to any 4x4 vehicles.

    • @22lrjayden81
      @22lrjayden81 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That loud pop is occurring from the differential locking as what he has is an open differential, lockers prevent the inside tire from spinning slower and the outside from spinning faster creating a locking pop to the system which can happen and for some doesn’t happen at all, it’s one of those things ig

    I have an Aussie locker in the front diff on a Dana 30, when I put the jeep in 4 wheel it's like the steering wheel is trying to have an arm wrestling match with me and the jeeps front end starts making hellacious noises. WTF is up with this??

  • @repr26
    @repr26 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It's all normal noise. the loud "clunk" was becuase the locker was either in a bind, or, more likely, had already begun to ratchet as you stopped. And then jumped a tooth or two as you started off. It's easy to verify, the "clunk" should only happen if you start a turn, and then stop.

    I'm going to put one in the front of my Wrangler JK. I hear that since it's always locked when torque is applied, you don't even know it's there in 2WD, which I will be 99% of the time. The jeep came with an LSD rear.

  • @raymondaslater4281
    @raymondaslater4281 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The loud clanks are normal, most people put auto lockers in their front axle if they are daily driving their rigs so it doesn't happen all the time. What's happening with yours is its locking then unlocking because it's in the main drive axle. When you have the locker in the front it only locks when you engage 4x4 it does sometimes clank and catch when you're in 2wd but other than that drives like normal on road.

    • @raymondaslater4281
      @raymondaslater4281 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a spartan auto locker in my front axle and my rear axle is open differential, so if you want a locker in the rear but don't want the noise get an E-switch or air locker.

My Spartan is even quiter with a bit more momentum (gas) in corners ,if i push the clutch it bangs more often and the car jumps and hop on his tires.I hope the loud bang come quiter with more miles on it.

    I am on the fence after hearing that. I know letting off the gas in corners is supposed to unlock it but I drive some twisty roads that you have to keep on the gas. I am nervous that a rapid lock or unlock would cause a spin on ice for me. I have never had issues with my kazuma limited slip in my tundra. Ii guess I need to research more. Thanks for the video.

    • @cfmechanic
      @cfmechanic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only way to avoid loud pops and bangs is wide turns. No u turns in residential street. Best to go to end of street make the swoop and then park. The tighter the turn the more pop also tire size and pressure also affect this. If your really wide it will be louder and if tires are low vs correct pressure it wil lil pop the lower the pressure due to grip.

    sounds all good to me. the reason it made so much noise was becuase it had to unlock while you where on the gas on that one corner. notice how when you coasted into the cul d sac it was peacful and quite? it unlocked while coasting and then carried on unlocked. it will always make more noise when its under torque and forced to open up.

    completely normal. if it wasn't doing that it would be bad (probably broken) the Detroit TrueTracs offered for pretty much every Toyota live axle are completely silent. they don't wear out. they don't wear tires. they don't need gear lube with friction additives but they also don't completely lock up so they aren't that great for offroading. probably just good for snow but thats about it. and they're expensive. i think i might get one to replace my open diff since i only drive on the street and have trouble keeping my tires from breaking loose. Thank you for this video. Was it upfront or rear. How reliable is it?

    That's all normal. Don't want the noise? Then don't install a real locker.

      The Spartan locker is a drop in replacement for the spider gears. This video is just showing the normal noises associated with an automatic mechanical locker.
