    No problem! Yes the digging work is a lot of fun. I actually left a job in banking to pursue this line of work just because I enjoy doing it. It's hard to beat playing on big machines all day!

    Nice job, I would have kept that 1st 6 inches of sod & soil for good topsoil seperate from the other pile , to spread back over after backfilled. Pretty smooth Operating, I have a cx130 good machines

      +jeremy kruse Thanks for the compliment! Here in Michigan the grass will grow in this soil without any problems so we never worried about separating the topsoil out.

      jeremy kruse Well I live in Michigan and we always separate the topsoil and grass will not grow on that clay!

      They are the way to go for digging basements and footers where you need a flat bottom.

    Could you possibly making a video on benching sir. Best techniques to accomplish such a task. Currently in trade school for heavy equipment operations. Love watching your videos!

      This is actually on my agenda to do. I'm waiting for an opportunity where I can dig deep enough to really show the technique. Thanks for the input and I really appreciate the support!

    What's the smallest excavator you can use to do a job like this, I wonder?

    • @paulcallaghan7805
      @paulcallaghan7805 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would depend on how quickly you want the job done. A 13/14 ton machine would be the smallest I'd use.

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +QwidgyboMan If you wanted and had the time to invest you could dig a basement with a backhoe. I see people doing this all over up here when time isn't a major concern.

  • @handymanhoney-do6881
    @handymanhoney-do6881 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a bit of narration would be helpful-quick description of what the job entails, why you are placing the dirt in that spot, strategies used to set the laborers up with a good starting point, some machine specs, etc. otherwise, we’re just watching some dude dig a hole lol.

      I posted this about 8 years before I got into making teaching videos. This was fully intended to be you sitting watching a guy dig a hole. My newer stuff is where the educational material is at

    @diesel and iron , by any chance do you know where the switch would be on a case 580 super n extendedhoe from iso to sae or John Deere controls to Cat controls?

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on what your control situation is. If you have wobble sticks I believe you physically have to switch lines around. If you have pilot controls there is a switch on the right control column that changes your pattern. It will have a little red lockout toggle on the switch to prevent accidental switching. BTW, thanks for hanging out on the live stream brother!

    • @famfam6205

      I typically use John Deere backhoes this would be the first time ever grabbing a case model

    I'm looking into getting into this type of work, and I was just wondering what steps you would recommend to do what you do. Like there is a local trade school that has an 8 week program next spring but it isn $7500. Any input would be great! Thanks!

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Brandon Draher Sorry for the late response! What part of the country are you in? If you have a union available to you, they have apprenticeship programs available where you train on the job. The next best thing to do is hire into a small company (similar to this) and start from the bottom. It's a great way to get machine time without someone breathing down your neck about production. After a few years at the controls you should be ready to move up to a larger company that will pay you for your new skill set.

      That's bullshit grass doesn't grow in any soil in Michigan cud I own excavation company and topsoil get stripped and saved every job we on. You must have bid on job and screwing customer. We only do shit right way.

  • @daleolson3506
    @daleolson3506 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why aren't you saving the top soil?

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's not really enough to justify going to the effort of saving it. The contractor has a landscape company come in and sod the lot after the house is built.

  • @zbo2
    @zbo2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    how has the 160 held up?

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +zbo2 We had the machine for about 1 year and a half before I left the company. It was holding up well. Didn't have the same power as the Cat but they try to compensate with a higher swing speed.

  • @lancesnyder2613
    @lancesnyder2613 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    And grass may grow in anything but keeping it growing with no topsoil won't happen.

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have a landscape company come through and take care of all that. There isn't any good topsoil on these lots. Not enough to make it worth saving.
