Djupivogur is a small town located on the Búlandsnes peninsula in the Austurland region of Iceland. It has a population of just over 400 people, but it is a popular destination for tourists thanks to its stunning scenery, charming atmosphere, and abundance of outdoor activities.
The town is overshadowed by Búlandstindur, a pyramid-shaped basalt mountain that peaks at 1,069 meters. The mountain is known across Iceland for its staggering, almost sculpted beauty. According to local folklore, the mountain is able to grant wishes during the summer solstice and is an "energy center" for the entire country.
Djupivogur has a number of interesting attractions, including:
The Eggs of Merry Bay: This public artwork features replicas of the eggs of the 32 birds that nest in the area. The eggs are made of fiberglass and are arranged in a circle along the shore.
Langabúð: This historic building is one of the oldest commercial buildings in Iceland. It was built in 1790 and served as a warehouse, slaughterhouse, and café. Today, it houses a museum and an exhibition on the Icelandic sculptor Ríkarður Jónsson, who was born in Djupivogur.
In addition to its attractions, Djupivogur is also a great place to enjoy the outdoors. If you are looking for a charming, off-the-beaten-path destination in Iceland, Djupivogur is a great choice.
    Djupivogur is a Cittaslow city.
Cittaslow, meaning “slow city” in Italian, is a movement that originated in Italy in the late 1990s. It advocates for a slower, more mindful approach to living and aims to create sustainable communities that prioritize quality of life over the frantic pace of modern urbanization. Cittaslow encourages a deep connection with local traditions, cultural heritage, and the environment, fostering a sense of belonging and well-being for residents and visitors alike.
At the heart of the Cittaslow philosophy is the concept of slowing down and savoring life’s simple pleasures. The movement promotes a more relaxed and human-scale approach to urban planning, emphasizing pedestrian-friendly streets, green spaces, and local businesses. By prioritizing the needs and well-being of individuals over the demands of rapid urban development, Cittaslow aims to create environments where people can truly thrive.
Cittaslow towns and cities strive to preserve and promote their unique cultural identity, traditions, and local products. From supporting local farmers and artisans to organizing festivals that celebrate regional cuisine and folklore, Cittaslow communities cherish their heritage and foster a strong sense of community pride. By valuing and preserving their distinct character, these towns become attractive destinations for visitors seeking an authentic, enriching experience and contribute to the sustainability of their local economies.
In a world where speed and efficiency often take precedence, Cittaslow offers a refreshing alternative. It encourages us to step off the fast-paced treadmill of modern life, to reconnect with nature, and to appreciate the beauty and richness of our surroundings. By embracing slow living principles, Cittaslow communities inspire us to rediscover the joy of a simpler, more meaningful existence, while nurturing a sustainable and harmonious relationship with our environment and each other.

Thank you so much for posting this great video. I’ll be in this port in July 2023. Did you drive around or just walk around the town when you took all the pictures and videos?
