It looks like Belushi is imitating a random samurai, but he has studied the movements and mannerisms of famous chambara actors like Toshio Mifune in Yojimbo. GENIUS.
The way he scratches the beard with the arm pulled out of the sleeve and coming inside of his kimono is the signature move of Mifune's samurai. John must have watched Kurosawa.
Exactly! It was suggested by Kurosawa for Mifune to adopt as a habit, to have some sort of visual signature for the character. This, and the shaking with the shoulders, so the audience would recognize the main character even when faced backwards. It's a nice surprise to see Belusi doing exactly these things.
@attymarco, I didn't know that, so I had to search and watch it. Glad I did. What a ride. Insane and hilarious. And what a great cast. So many of my favourites all put together. Thank you, attymarco. You connected the dots in a great way! 👏
I just seen this skit for the first time in years I forgotten how outrageously funny it was God how I miss them days Bellucci Chase and Pryor doesn't get much better than that
That's because it's so darned near perfect that people will *still* be laughing at it 42 years from now, or 142 years from now. there are very few examples of timeless comedy, done by a pair of gifted geniuses. This is one of them.
So around the guests on the show, Belushi would act completely thrashed and get them totally worried that he was going to blow scenes... and then he would turn stuff around like this.
some short words like "mama san" or "oi" are understood as Japanese. I guess Beloshi even knew we often speak with less intonate n accent. His speaking Japanese are matching as our pronounce but mostly there's no meaning. btw should I ask him where to get cheez booger?
Belushi was infamous for never, EVER breaking character when dressed as the samurai. Both the fact that he did here and that LOOK on Pryor's face makes this priceless.
Still some of my favorite sketches. John Belushi really went the extra mile to get the act just right, which makes the character break at the end all the better! Him cutting his finger was pretty good too, probably unintentional but he ran with it.
I so remember this back in 1975. Almost died laughing. Can't tell if this or the Steve martin King tut skit was the funniest. Good memories. The original cast were never duplicated. The best !!!!
The only thing funnier than Belushi as a Samurai is Richard Pryor as a Samurai! God, this show used to make me howl with laughter! It’s still funny all these years later. Classic SNL with the original cast. The first five years were incredible! It was live comedy without a net every Saturday night and it was exciting because anything could happen. And the bands back then were great too! I must get the DVD box set! Thanks for reminding me TH-cam and whoever uploaded this clip. 👏😆😂😁😎🍾
How TF U Morons say there are only 2? I see 3 GREATS in this sketch! If ur trying to down grade Pryor or Chevy than ur a F'n MORON! 3 GREATS In this sketch, NO LESS
Afro Samurai was a derivative of this obviously. Yomamasan didn't raise no fool. Also, Afro Samurai has Samuel L Jackson in it, and he barely swears. Definitely worth a watch.
To be honest, who watches Kurosawa films anymore. Though part of me wonders if it would work with Jojo Bizarre Adventure or anime today (not just offensive issue, just would be cringe-y). Same with Mikado since it was trying to ride from 19th century equivalent of Weeaboo culture.
This is before anyone on the show could afford coke, or before they were so popular that dealers were giving it to them for free, so....no. Not talking about Pryor, just the SNL guys.
I have no idea why this is a classic SNL sketch. He’s just doing a loud, vague impression of a Japanese guy, while dressed as a samurai and waving a katana around.
The fact that belushi rehearsed this infront of his cat only makes this whole sketch more hilarious 😂
Bahahhahah
hahaha
That depends. What did his cat think of it? 😆😂🤣
Do you mean cast 🐈
@@deewop2632 no he really practiced his character in front of his cat
"YO MAMA SAN!" It only works because Belushi has been entirely incomprehensible so far through the sketch. Brilliant.
NewhamMatt / Funny, that's just what I said.
I wouldn't say that's the "only" reason it worked. I do agree Belushi AND Pryor were brilliant....
@@rosss1959 lol
That was funny as hell
It looks like Belushi is imitating a random samurai, but he has studied the movements and mannerisms of famous chambara actors like Toshio Mifune in Yojimbo. GENIUS.
Honestly having watched that stuff I could tell and it made it way better.
Oh yeah, absolutely. I could totally see that, especially slipping his arm out of his sleeve to scratch his face.
He obviously didn't study how to sheath a katana properly though 😁
Zatoich the Blind Swordsman.
Yeah I was like "obviously he's imitating Japanese Samurai movies
Another good memory from my youth! John Belushi and Richard Pryor were hilarious!
Best line from Belushi at the end: "Yeah, I can dig where you're comin' from."
The only time his character spoke plain English.
thanks for spoiling the pun
I loved Mamasan
Belushi was infamous for never stepping out of the Samurai persona when he was in it which makes the ending all the more funny.
"funnier"
tripjet999 that’s makes literally no sense
Carrot Slow, aintcha?
Chalwa when was the last time you heard someone say “all the more funnier”
Carrot just now...
The way he scratches the beard with the arm pulled out of the sleeve and coming inside of his kimono is the signature move of Mifune's samurai. John must have watched Kurosawa.
Yes, you are correct. Belushi's "Futaba" samurai character was inspired by Mifune's characters.
Exactly! It was suggested by Kurosawa for Mifune to adopt as a habit, to have some sort of visual signature for the character. This, and the shaking with the shoulders, so the audience would recognize the main character even when faced backwards. It's a nice surprise to see Belusi doing exactly these things.
@@cacauldr If memory serves, Belushi and Mifune appeared in "1941" in the late 70s.
@attymarco, I didn't know that, so I had to search and watch it. Glad I did. What a ride. Insane and hilarious. And what a great cast. So many of my favourites all put together.
Thank you, attymarco. You connected the dots in a great way! 👏
I was just watching 'Yojimbo' and it made me think of this sketch 🤣🤣🤣
Classic. Never gets old. R.I.P John Belushi
And Richard Pryor.
Belushi and Pryor were perfect choices for this type of slapstick comedy
2:15 OMG I was not expecting Richard Pryor. I just about died LOL Your mama-san
R.I.P to these two amazing legends.
Chevy is still alive
#BelushiAndPryor.
So nice seeing Ricard and John do this but. Perfect! Yo mama-san gets me every time!
It was even funny how he sorted mail! With the shouts!
I just seen this skit for the first time in years I forgotten how outrageously funny it was God how I miss them days Bellucci Chase and Pryor doesn't get much better than that
Who is Bellucci?
*Belushi
42 years later and this still cracks me up.

Dopey me forgot Richard Pryor was in this skit.LOVED IT!!! WITHOUT A DOUBT TWO GENIUSES!!!!🤣🤣🤣
wow is this skit that old? I wasnt even born yet.
John Belushi & Richard Pryor should have been in multiple movie together.
The world lost some seriously funny movies by this not happening. Although Pryor and WIlder did make some excellent movies.
Tell it to their mutual coke dealer.
Two comedy legends😅
The audience knew they were in the presence of greatness with these two.
So around the guests on the show, Belushi would act completely thrashed and get them totally worried that he was going to blow scenes... and then he would turn stuff around like this.
Amazing that they learned fluent Japanese just for a sketch.
Really?
@@jamesroodhouse8812 I am Japanese. His YAAAHs are perfect.

Even as coked up samauris working in a hotel, you gotta love Belushi and Pryor
Love how at the end John breaks character.
Belushi was infamous for never, EVER breaking character when dressed as the samurai. Both the fact that he did here and that LOOK on Pryor's face makes this priceless.
I can dig, where you're coming from.
If you ever watch the early In Living Color scenes many famous actors are guilty of this as well
As a Japanese person I say this is a hundred percent accurate about us.
Pls translate
@@9965paul we don't speak Belushi, though.
Of course, it's well known the '70s were famous for the care they put into understanding other cultures

Omfg that random golf stroke with the katana, my sides ;D
CLASSIC.
Yea and using the samurai sword as a pool stick.lol

He devised so many things to be funny in this skit.

It is amazing how John Belushi can be funny when he isn't even saying real words
Except at the end:
“Well, I can dig where you’re coming from.”
It was incredible what he could do with a simple raised eyebrow
Lol 3:07 Chevy had to hold his hand after the paper ball fell on it 😂

John Belushi was incredible and so brilliant, he stole the show so many times on SNL.
He and Ayckroyd were always my favorites. And Gilda.
Agreed
The great Belushi together with Pryor so great 😂
3 absolute LEGENDS in this sketch. Richard Pryor only hosted once on SNL, yet it's still considered one of the greatest episodes they ever did.
Anyone else feel like the phrase "And then Richard Pryor showed up." Happenes in alot of epic stories?😂
It doesn't happen in enough of them.
Amen!👍🤓
It’s a German legend there’s always going to be a mountain in there somewhere
Priceless episode of SNL.
When he use the sword as a pool stick 😂
John Belushi's audition for SNL was a Samurai pool player.
That's culture appropriation #cancel70sSNL
I so remember this back in 1975. Almost died laughing. Can't tell if this or the Steve martin King tut skit was the funniest. Good memories. The original cast were never duplicated. The best !!!!
To this day SNL has not come close to the original cast. In short, SNL went downhill from 77 on.

This is the true art of the comedian: Belushido!
Comedy genius, both Richard Pryor and John Belushi.
And, don’t forget Paul Mooney wrote for that week’s show as well.
Actually it's Chevy chase and Charlie murphy
Awesome! I’ve watched this a million times. I miss the 70s.
Belushi was a treasure. This is side splitting.
He was unbelievably funny damn I miss him!

They really killed it with the samurai deli though
❤ John Belushi was a genius of comedy. I wish he was here now.
Now THAT is comedy. "Your momma san". 🤣
Belushi's character is really a parody of Kurosawa films, not Japanese people.

Actual representation of my last two brain cells
Jim went to my HS. Wheaton Illinois. Great talent.
When I asked a kid, Saturday night was staying up late and hearing the SNL band with a pizza with my brothers.
My only pet peeve is they used the stereotypical Chinese jingle, I think the "Yooooo" sound effect would've been funnier.
Still greatly funny & surprised Chevy didn't manage to break & ruin it
What anime looks like to our parents.
That sketch never gets old. Both Belushi and Pryor as Samurais. "You're Mama-san!"🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Chevy Chase's costume got me thinking *Le Samouraï*
The Dan Aykroyd seemed to understand everything the hotel manager was saying to him and without being intimidated!! Too funny!!
I love how Richard Pryor's baldpate is so obvious. Had to be on purpose. 😄
Richard Pryor as the host of doing SNL in the 70s. He was sweet. Rip. Richard Pryor.
