Anthony here was very polite and diplomatic, considering how the jazz and non jazz community treated him back in the days. He wanted to be remembered and recognised for his concert works, but the record industry wanted to market him as the "black intellectual saxophonist that plays strange jazz" but at the same time the jazz critics attacked him because he wasn't "black" enough. The academic environment never cared about him and his extremely wide aesthetic and philosophical vision, reducing him to a "wannabe" composer: maybe, they thought he wasn't "white" enough. Anthony's career has always been sadly plagued with racism and misunderstanding, and I believe that he must have felt some bitterness in getting this specific award. Truly a gentleman.
Anthony Braxton, a fierce intellectual, brilliant musician, true gentleman, and a jazz master in every sense. He is also in a class all his own. Love the man, love his music.
