This video matters because you have managed to really distill the core message and philosophy of Dune into something anyone can understand!

Finished the first Dune book shortly after seeing the film, now starting Dune Messiah, and yep this not only is such an on-point summary of the messaging I have so far, but what the first film alone tackles. I have heard many people say that Dune Part 1 should have ended after the attack on Arrakeen...but then that would just make it a climatic, generic ending to a Part 1, instead of the ending Denis chose with Paul choosing to join the Fremen (become Muad'dib). The ending a lot of book lovers wanted would have been too safe, I think. The ending we got was more thematic and therefore more interesting to me. Part 1 shows Paul's transformation and growth - Part 2 will be (as we book-readers know) what he does with that transformation and how it takes over him.
Anyway, my post is a bit rambly, but enjoyed your video essay!

Damn dude, that was great. I’ve been fairly critical of the concept of the hero’s journey since I read The Hero with a Thousand Faces a couple years ago. Not like aggressively critical or anything, it’s definitely worth exploring. But for me it kind of presents the idea of some sort of inherent truth to concepts like manifest destiny, imperialism, westernization, and hero/savior worship bullshit. It’s probably a harsh interpretation, but I can see how it might subtly lead to these perspectives. That being said, I’ve never really thought much about the psychology of a person born into this position of heroic expectation. It only really seems to leave you with 3 basic options. Either you accept your role for selfish reasons, you accept it for noble reasons, or reject it for the sake of your own agency. And, well, each of those options can kind of suck and have terrible implications. So if Dune is a deconstruction of the Hero’s Journey it kind of demonstrates the trappings of the concept of destiny. Both in how’s it ultimately artificial, but also leaves a person with little alternative if they have authentic concerns for the welfare of the people around them. So a person who strives to be an authentic hero, at least in terms of implied destiny (such as royalty or whatever), ultimately, has no real agency.

@@hamwise1792 You absolutely DO have a great grasp of it. It doesn’t take years of studying to learn the lessons that stories share with us. Keep analyzing film and keep sharing your opinions on them because you’re smart and your interpretation of art has merit. What separates my opinion from other peoples opinions is that I record mine with a microphone and add stock footage on top of that recording to be heard. That’s it. If I can do it you can do it better.

Frank Herbert was rather explicit about his distaste for authoritarian methods, social engineering, or manipulation of society purely for the sake of power. "Heroes should come with a warning label on their forehead: Might be hazardous to your health." Same with the simplistic notion that if any regime or societal setup is utterly corrupt, the people replacing it will automatically do everything better. As Paul's story and that of his Fremen followers later proves, revolutions led purely by tribalism (us vs. them mentalities) can easily lead to the further continuation of corruption, even if they presented themselves as doing away with it. If any leadership is given carte blanche to engage in abuse of absolute power, without any oversight or accountability for their actions, you're likely to see the outcome of that old notion: "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." One of the ultimate ironies is that the Fremen's eventual rise to power thanks to Paul is something that also gradually brings down their culture and its future potential.
Herbert also emphasized this subtle difference: The issue with faith isn't having faith in and of itself (as long as it's sincere and mature), the issue with faith is when it's not really a nuanced, thoughtful, self-questioning faith, but just ritualised, blindly obeyed superstition. Faith where you go through the motions, and never question your own actions or others' actions. Part of how simple-minded fanaticism is born, further fueled by stoking hatred for imagined enemies.
The reason the BG were able to implant the legend among the Fremen rather easily was because they knew the Fremen's weak spot is an obsession with tradition and ritual, and various desert survival related superstitions. So it's no surprise they're one of the perfect victims for a false prophecy about a false saviour figure, a prophecy which didn't even originate among them. They're not stupid. They're just so steeped in daily ritualised superstition ("if you don't do this exactly this way, you might not survive in the desert") that they avoid critically thinking about the possibility they were duped by a cunning institution of the Imperium. An order that doesn't even care for people's religious beliefs. And yet, as this film adaptation also portrayed rather accurately, the Fremen aren't entirely blind believers. Those who automatically see Paul as some new prophet/saviour are more in the minority, but the majority of Fremen are still superstitious enough that they're willing to consider the ingrained new legends implanted a while back by the BG as true.

This is best explanation to those who believe that Dune Part One didn’t matter and was only set up when it told Paul’s arc into joining the Fremen and accepting the path of Maud’Dib.
