I have watched so many homesteading channels and this is the first one that you watch and they say it’s ok to feed based on what you can afford or want. I love how they are keeping things to the basics.
We’ve bought a lot of conventional feed over the years and I ain’t dead 😂 we prefer it we can find a reasonable source organic but it’s gotta be reasonable!
I love you guys. You always make me smile while learning something new. I just placed an order with a local farmer for chicks to add to my little flock.
Best combination I found. Buy whatever chicken feed you are using , then buy a bag of whole oats , like the one for horses, and a bag of black oil sunflower seeds . Mix all that together in a big container with a couple scoops of DE and it works like a charm. Of course supplement with time on grass, meal worms and table scraps
These days, I can't find black oil sunflower seeds for less than $30 per 50 lb bag. That's outside my price range. It's a good idea, though. We feed a bagged feed and a scoop of bird seed on the side where they used to get sunflower seed. Kitchen scraps are a given, imo.
@@goldengryphon yeah it can be costly , but I got a 30 gallon metal trash can and mix it all in a large quantity so it lasts longer and ends up being a little more cost effective. Plus they go nuts for sunflower seeds and oat seeds . The oat seeds are great for dual purpose reasons too as it sprouts super quick when applied to soil. I tend to seed spots where they have made scratch patches . Block it off, let it grow for a week until fresh baby shoots appear and they go bananas for it pulling the green shoots and seeds.

I love your chicken videos! I've been raising chickens for 10 years, but there's always something to learn. I just think it's great that you made these videos encouraging others to start. I hatch chicks and give them away to make more crazy chicken ladies. The neighborhood is full of chickens. One rooster crows and there are a dozen echos.
Well we did it!! 6 chicks have joined our family this last week 2 Easter eggers 2 olive eggers, 1 Rhode Island red & 1 white Leghorn! All I know is what you guys and a few others on TH-cam have taught me but we decided to "Just Start"

I've had chickens for decades and have become used to significantly decreased laying in the winter when they are moulting in the winter. This year I "pressured" and fed some venison scraps and they started laying more in January. By February I had too many eggs. What a shock :)
@@Goodoverevil2either, depending on when they were fresh - raw, or later I cooked and froze some and pressure canned some. I also used the canned stuff for a protein boost for the barn cat.
What about growing your own feed? I worry about the world going to heck and not being able to source feed from outside of my homestead. Also, just discovered your channel today, instantly followed. Thanks for the great information!
You want to give us good advice? What to feed, local source, grow to feed your chickens when the world goes to heck & feed stores either close or feed is to expensive to buy???
My chickens just don't seem to like layer pellets. They waste more than they eat, which brings in the rats. Mine are total free-range, so, I feed scratch. They clean up the feed dropped by other animals and roam the entire yard/barn/close pasture area. I started fermenting the scratch, too, which has gone over very well. Soon, the black soldier flies will be out (think Grubblies), and I grow them in a bag of cast-off Chaffhaye that has been moistened. I tried the organic 6-grain scratch, which was definitely more expensive, but it is SO dusty. So, I'll be going back to the scratch mixed by my local feed mill. May add in some black oil sunflower seed, too. I'm not raising them for eggs to sell. And it's just me (and I give some to my neighbors), so ramped up egg production isn't crucial to me, but I am considering hatching out some to raise as meat birds. Right now, I'm getting 5-6 eggs per day, which is fine for my 10 hens. Three of them are young, and just started laying a month ago.
I was really hoping the chickens could totally free range with rotational grazing. We have crazy huge grasshoppers here and I was hoping those would be enough besides during winter.
Brittany, we mentioned for “best production” give them a specific layer feed. If you have great forage and plenty of land, and no winter, they can probably live off that, but to ensure they have what they need for best production feed is safest way to go. You can greatly reduce what is needed by foraging

Also, apple cider vinegar and garlic in their water for an immune system boost. You can offer oregano water too.

@@piquat1 me I put a shot to a cup. It depends on the animal. Myself i have a shot glass in a cup of water. It is strong but i like it.

Fish scraps make them lay like crazy. Tuna really works also by feeding them fish it puts omega in the eggs. High protein is the keys
