    For the machine learning and mathematics part "Mathematics for machine learning" is a free textbook that teaches you the math (linear algebra, multivariate calc and some geometry) and the stats (regression) plus some common algorithms (with jupyter notebooks available with worked examples). So it's a nice general overview of the entire things for those short on time

    I’m a full time data scientist and I took the course Fundamentals of statistics that were mentioned in the video. That’s a pretty tough course, you must have a good foundation in multivariate calculus and linear algebra. Besides, it is a highly theoretical course, so if you wanna experiment something more practical don’t go for it.
    However, if your intention is to fill the statistics gap, I strongly recommend it. Moreover, I should mention that there is another course considered a pre requisite for this one. It is called “probability: the science of uncertainty and data”, which is also from MIT and available on EdX.
    With these two courses, you are capable of dealing with any problem in statistics in a theoretical approach.

    Hi, Charlotte! I would highly recommend everyone interested in Computational Neuroscience to get their hands on Statistical Mechanics, as whole brain modes are based on the extension of spiking neuron models to the Thermodynamic Limit.
    Once there, the study of Phase Portraits, Stability, Critical Exponents, Phase Transitions and so on is found and applied everywhere.
    It also builds up the bases for neural networks and dimensionality reduction algorithms.

    We use R in my biology bachelor's programme, maybe I'll give this a try now that I already have some basic knowledge. If there is anything I've learned in uni it's that if you know where to get quality learning material, nothing is preventing you from learning all this on your own basically for free. All uni does is providing a "guided tour", although to be fair the practical courses will be hard to organise for people learning on their own. Thank you for all the info!

    My undergrad was in cell & molecular biology with a minor in physics. I took lots of math too. My biggest regret was not taking *any* computer science or programming classes, though. I corrected this as a post-bacc.. I am doing a masters in Data Science now and can attest to the absolute need for R and Python programming skills. In reality, I am not sure you can get to my knowledge level with a few bootcamps online. You can supplement, for sure. But you really need the rigor of a course, imho, to at least start your self-learning process. The Bishop book is indeed awesome. The David McKay has the class he uses that book for online, btw, right here on TH-cam. Computational neuroscience is definitely an interest of mine. We shall see what kind of doors open once I complete this Data Science MS.

    Coming from a non-tech Excel background, I found R far easier to use than Python, as I didn't have to learn much CS. Additionally, you don't miss much by choosing R, as similar to Python, it too also comes with pre-built ML/DL libraries like Keras - so basic googling & Copy-Paste of code is good enough.

      That’s an impressive set of degrees in areas not normally considered to be closely associated with one another-are they available online?
      Normally, a BS level degree will be in “physics.” Then, focusing upon a specialized area within physics, such as astrophysics, will normally require astronomy courses, lots of math, more (theoretical) physics, an approved thesis, and an MS results. A PhD in the sciences extends a Master’s, and normally requires a unique proposal, a very specific area of study and research, and a dissertation approved by professors.
      Neuroimaging, in our dept, can be approached from an MD/medical perspective, via an engineering route, or computer science degree programs.
      Did you pick up a chiropractic degree as well?

    I did mathematical neuroscience research with a bachelors in neuroscience (pretty terrible grades if I am honest haha).
    Like she said, Neuroscience is the easy part, the math is the hard part
    I learned MATLAB and machine learning from the Machine Learning course she mentioned by Andrew Ng. I pretty much learned diff eq and a lot of linear algebra while in the group
    The one thing I wish is that I really wish I had a better understanding of linear algebra. I have actually heard Gilbert Strang is a bit tougher for LA but I really liked the videos on 3Blue1Brown.
    I learned C and Python from a course called CS50 and doing a lot of projects I am currently working as a software engineer :)

    I would love to see statically-typed (with type-inference) languages invade data-science. I've worked with a number of data-science groups and these dynamically-typed languages like R and Python allow people to make some really hard-to-debug mistakes.

    I agree that Andrew Ng's Machine Learning course on Coursera is very useful for people with beginner-level knowledge of stats. I would also add the book Computational Modeling of Cognition and Behavior by Farrell and Lewandowsky. It is a great R-based introduction to Machine Learning, including different model fitting and model comparison algorithms.

    • @DrunkenUFOPilot
      @DrunkenUFOPilot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ng's course is good, but at that level. Someone who has been following the academic literature for a while might not need the whole course from scratch, but it could be good for a systematic overview, fill in some gaps, or to recall stuff you should already know but have neglected due to career twists and turns.

    AAHH, so this is what I was experimenting with back in 2010! Thanks, I never knew the name! I grew artificial neural network with genetic algorithms and formed populations from the different structures and then sorted them by their throughput. I guess real computational neuroscience would instead apply models to actual brain structures and try to mimic the output, but that is only semantical difference.

    • @CharlotteFraza
      @CharlotteFraza  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we also use the same algorithms with genetics sometimes, so nice that you also worked on that^^!
