    That plant is garlic mustard. If your cows eat it it can taint the milk, but it is nice in a salad. Nothing wrong with turnip you bid jessy, I hope your wife put in in the Irish stew just to put a smile on your mothers face.😂😂

    A suggestion - When training calves on the electric fence, try doing it in a walled enclosure - maybe use machinery (tractor & trailer) to make a 'wall', have wire 1-2 metres from boundary. The daylight is a big part of the 'excitement' and if they break through they can't escape. Leave 'em there for a few hours and the field part might also be less exciting! Do you get what I am at? Now I never tried it and basically because it's a while since I farmed good luck with it anyway!
    My turnips was bacon and cabbage and of course the more it was forced the more you hated it - now you couldn't give me enough of it and the turnips add to the fayre. This is a popular dish in Munster with the people who have their dinner in the middle of the day! I converted half of London to it and a few of our own as well and everyone is swelled and happy!

  • @mrvanahead
    @mrvanahead 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    We had a person talking about wolf proofing our horse fencing. One of the most important things for the condition of the electric tape is to NOT make knots in it, as it the shorts out on itself. Same goes for connections on underground wire. About the grips.. i was told that in the tape there is a couple copper wires, and the copper reacts with the inox of the grips and make em rust anyway. No matter what brand.. i use only gallager grips, but they do it too. But cutting out knots and connect em with special connectors made a difference this year.

    • @IFarmWeFarm
      @IFarmWeFarm  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s very interesting, good knowledge to have and I will certainly give it a go 👍

    • @mrvanahead
      @mrvanahead 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@IFarmWeFarm for horses we use wider tape (4cm) and thick cord. I new knotting wasn't the best way as you sometimes could hear it tick. But those special connectors aren't cheap. (As is everything on the horsefencing equipement is). And with 3 lines going around 14hectares in 4 different fields, we got some fencing hanging around 😅 and a lot of tape-gates too. But with current weather conditions grass and weeds underneath the fence is the main thing of loosing energy.

    We used to paint emulsion paint on the cows tails to check for heat detection. If a cow is bulling rather than just being jumped on you can tell the difference between them because the bulling one will have lifted her tail rubbing more paint off

    The plant is called charlock a garlic flavoured herb from the brassica family. I expect your mum was trying to make the turnips a bit tasty . We will be glad to do these things again, not if, but when the food shortages begin. I have to say I don’t like turnips either, but swedes are quite nice.
    We have another farmer’s calves for the summer, they can break through well fenced thick hedges with us before they settle down. It must be a bit scary for them having not seen the earth and sky before.

    The bubbles burst for too many reasons
    Go scratch cards & you won’t do heat detecting in the paddock again.
    I buy a spray glue to put them on tho because scratch cards don’t stick like the bubbles. Get an aerosol glue tho because it dries quick enough 👌🏻👍

    We use the scratch card style of detector. They have a 40-55% Success rate for us. 1/2 The time they fall off or get picked off by a cow scratching. They work best in the summer heat, but are awful in the wet or winter. We’re considering switching to tail paint spray. Our AI guy recommends it and claims you can tell the story of the cow better…is she in heat or being ridden or chin rested on by a cow that’s in heat herself.

      @IFarmWeFarm get them pigtails that's a foot long approx & screw them to the wall and put your electric tape on them. The calves will soon learn to stay away from it. Once you'll let them out into the yard / field you'll be amazed how they stop at it straight away. They wouldn't learn about electric tape in an hour in the yard I think.
