One of my most favorite painters. He created a different language through line and marks, symbolism, color and rhythms in which to see and feel nature -- not necessarily to "interpret" nature by our own limited concepts and experiences.
Burchfield is amazing. I think the curator missed it altogether in saying Burchfield's expression was transcendental, hallucinogenic, etc. It shows the curator doesn't understand the essence of Burchfield, or that the curator is unable to describe more astutely visionary art, except in drug-induced terms. Burchfield absolutely believed in God and his later work of meadow and forest expressions reflect not only his love of nature, but the very glorious soul of life -- the halos of light and heat, for instance, around flowers, makes them seem to be in a heavenly sphere. One can view his works on so many different levels, as in the mystery of repeated use of the architectural gothic shapes in houses and also in tree edges, etc. His paintings are under an umbrella of god-like language and I want to walk through his cathedrals of light.
@@AllenCrawford3 Yes. But you are also putting out ideas that aren't true either. You are only expressing what YOU see in his paintings. To call him a "pantheistic mystic" is to limit his beliefs. According to an extensive book on his life, he was a Christian -- in the sense he believed there was a triune God who created the beauty, the senses, and the mystery he saw and interpreted..
