Hi Margaret, yes, I agree. I'm hoping to find on TH-cam the scene where Leroy tells Rhoda there's a blue electric chair for bad little boys and a pink electric chair for bad little girls....

The actor, Henry Jones, was always at the top of his game, but he was never clever. He was written as a very low IQ guy - described in the play as an imbecile - which is a word that used to be used in psychology for someone whose IQ was in the 60s. His only edge on Rhoda comes purely by accident.

Rhoda probably enjoys Leroy friendship because, she can show her true self to him. What a fabulous scene.

Leslie Collins. Also, she tolerates his harassments because he gives her information. Notice that she defends him when Christine caught them conversing. He was inadvertently helping her be a better criminal. She took his information and wanted to know how much was actually true. Because of his claims she tries to burn her shoes but is caught in doing so.

The actress that played Claude Dagle's mom had me crying like a baby. Rhoda's mom had me feeling tortured at the idea of being in her position. Leroy had me laughing at times but I could tell he was definitely a creepazoid. This is one of the best movies to ever hit the screen. Period.

I know its sad , what Mrs. Daigle went through, but at times in the movie I kinda see her as a comedy relief. I read in the novel, twice, that's not the case. Christine went to the Daigle's house once to see her, trying to comfort her, and Hortense just cried and cried. Never went to the Penmark house.

I wouldn’t say Leroy was a creep, he was aware of what others didn’t care to pay attention to, such as, Monica’s delusions of thinking she’s a psychoanalyst, Christine’s loneliness with her husband always away, and last but certainly not least, Rhoda’s ability to trick others into giving her what she wants, her true self.

Leroy is a simpleton who functions at a level somewhere beneath Rhoda's mental age. By teasing her and play-acting at being a detective, he accidentally stumbles upon the truth. He's not a sly or cagey person by any stretch of the word. When he finds out the truth, he is as frightened as any little child would be because he is himself a child. Monica Breedlove even alludes to this when she dismissively describes Leroy as a spiteful and neurotic child who has somehow managed to raise a family.

Henry Jones amassed a considerable stage resume. He was active on Broadway as early as 1931, working there rather infrequently until late 1938 when his appearance there began to increase. He continued to appear on Broadway in numerous hit productions ("My Sister Eileen," "The Solid Gold Cadillac," "The Bad Seed," "Sunrise at Campobello," and "Advise and Consent") until 1961 when he moved into film and TV work exclusively.

Don't you see that Rhoda is A BOY!!! ...and one thing to keep in mind: this is "Hollywood" dabbling with the Holy Scriptures so there are things that need to be edited out. Michael, according to Scripture, doesn't burn Satan in the lake of fire until the very end. He is here TO CHAIN HIM in the pit for 1000 years. What do you think Rhoda's pretty chain is for? 67.media.tumblr.com/b2b632193f110ea39d98a4a3f1f516fa/tumblr_nj98uwzPDD1qd9a66o2_1280.jpg

I'm not just saying this because I am a librarian--the movie is good but the book is SO much better, especially the "friendship" between Rhoda and LeRoy. She was the master and he the humble student of crime. She encouraged him to "go for it" not knowing the real crime he wants to commit is raping her mother. Of course he dies before he can. The scene when he figures how she did is incredible. The way the author describes the switch in her demeanor is worthy of The Godfather..."it's business, nothing personal" might as well have been said.

This is my favorite part in this movie..This movie is great, they made two remakes of this movie one in 1985 with Blair Brown as the bad seed little girl...And a new one on Lifetime movie 2018 with Mckenna Grace as the little demon girl...But nothing compares to the original Bad Seed movie with Patty McCormack playing Rhoda the demon bed seed girl..I love this movie, even tho it is about a wicket little girl..I also think the cast was excellent in the original 1956 movie..Henry Jones played Leroy perfect! Nancy Kelly did a fantastic job playing the mother of her demon child..And Eileen Heckart played the mother of the little boy, her son that Rhoda killed for his medal he won at school..You could almost feel the pain those two mother were going through..Great acting on their part! And of course Patty McCormack playing Rhoda the bad seed demon young girl...She was great playing that part, she made you hate her and scared of her all at the sametime, that's great acting!...And Evelyn Varden the neighbor who saw nothing wrong with young Rhoda, prised her like she was an Angel above..I wanted to smack her at times, she was being fooled by a demon young girl! The original 1956 "Bad Seed" movie gets 5 ***** in my book and always will!

@windstorm1000 They weren't 'overacting' . All the film's major characters had performed "The Bad Seed" on the stage-they simply acted in the same way for the film version. And I disagree with your assessment-all the performers especially Patty McCormack' and Henry Jones were wonderful. Eileen Ekchart played the scenes of the drunken, grieving mother brilliantly.

I read in a Billy Wilder biography, he heard about "The Bad Seed" and he said "What a great idea" and he wanted to direct it! But at first, the Warner Bros. studio didn't want a movie about a little girl killer.
So, around 1955-56 he directed "The Spirit of St. Louis" instead - it was kinda new when we saw it in a theater, I was too small to remember it ...

I remember character actor Henry Jones from an episode of the "Lost In Space" TV series titled, " Curse of Cousin Smith". He played Dr. Smith's cousin Jeremiah Smith where both are trying to kill each other.in order to cl;aim an inheritance. Beautiful blue eyed blonde Patty McCormick was perfect for the role of Rhoda, in the previous play version then later in this movie version. Who would think such an innocent, sweet beautiful little girl like Rhoda was secretly a serial killer. But Leroy got her figured out and foolishly taunted her with his theories. Leroy was smart, but lacked common sense in how to react to one such as Rhoda. He fatally paid for that mistake.
Patty McCormack then starred in the movie (in color) "Kathy O'" which with her pretty blonde hair and pig tails and superb acting was perfect for the role of a pampered young actress that secretly yearned for a loving family life. She also did well in an episode of One Step beyond as a farm girl temporarily given the gift from God to read minds, also in "Dan Marshall's Brat", a commercial for shoes, and some other things back in the late 1950's. Actress Patty Duke (born Anna Marie Duke) who starred in The Patty Duke Show and in the movie "Billie", mentioned that she took the moniker of "Patty" after her movie idol Patty McCormack, who became friends later in life.

In the book Leroy had a wife and kids , and was like the movie version , obviously a little slow - but he did have a thing for Rhoda. When he got home , he liked nothing better than thinking about her , and when he was at the house ribbing her and getting under her skin. He thought they were two of a kind.

A delightful scene and very well acted; it was humorous despite its ominous undertones. Patty McCormack's enunciation in the scene is excellent. Every syllable and consonant is clipped making her performance as Rhoda Penmark very believable. Rhoda comes off as more sympathetic in the scene to me because even though she is a murderer we still hate to see Leroy taunting her. That is the conflict in the story i.e. our feelings of sympathy for Rhoda versus our knowledge of her crimes. It was a conflict that was well set up by the filmmaker.

    • @murph8837
      @murph8837 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I never felt sympathy for Rhoda or believe we are supposed to feel any sympathy for her at all. We are supposed to be sympathetic to Leroy because he unwittingly stumbles in on her crime and pays for it with his life.

Rhonya De Leon the remake in 1985 is based on the same book and 1956. It's more graphic, cuz it shoes her actually push the old woman miss post down the stairs, go after the boy with the medal on the pier at the picnic , also go after Leroy and catch fire to the shed after he said he had her shoes. It also has the original book ending that couldnt be shown in 1956, where mother dies and bad seed lives, but in 1956 they couldn't let evil win over innocence. But the 2018 was completely changed. They should've showed more or kept the same story line. The 1985 also goes more into detail about Christine her mom's past it shows her nightmares about Bessy danker going after her. It's not as bad as people say . You should check it out. Good cast too. David carradine as Leroy.
