  • Craigmillar Castle Edinburgh, some parts dated around 1300-1400's.
The Castle was residence to the Prestons, a prominent Edinburgh family, in late medieval times.
This Castle sits in the southern outskirts of Edinburgh. One of Scotlands most preserved historic buildings! The gardens and grounds are fairly impressive too. The remaining fishpond shaped in a 'p' for Preston can still be seen in the grounds.
Having been inhabited for over 350 years there were many alterations made to the Castle which gives it its many nooks and crannies to explore.
Mary Queen of Scots came to stay at Craigmillar in 1544 and again in 1566. She came seeking solace and peace from a troubled year.
The Castle was taken over by Sir John Gilmour in 1660. Whose family remained in residence into the following century.
In 1949 the Castle was entrusted into state care.
