As an aviation enthusiast I’ve been known to not only identify a type by its noise, but also the individual airframe. It’s a skill that impresses nobody.

As an aviation enthusiast, I've learned to distinguish between most of the different ACs overhead. Show me any combat aircraft from the last 80 years and I'll probably recognise it (without War thunder) and tell a story about it.
It's a skill that impresses only a few. In contrast, I really don't care about anybody's car.

All this is completely unnessecary, at least if you live in late- war Germany.
Here is how they went about it:
If it's green or comes during the night, it's British.
If it is silver or comes during the day, that's the Americans.
And if it is invisible or completely undetectable by any means, that's the mighty Luftwaffe!
I don't even know who to credit for this, I think it is an original german Flüsterwitz (whisper joke).

    • @fonesrphunny7242
      @fonesrphunny7242 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Didn't the British suspend night attacks, because these had terrible accuracy? I might need to read up on that.
In any case, making fun of the early bad RAF night capabilities, sounds like a thing that might have persisted throughout the war.

i heard a similar thing growing up :
if you hear and see planes during the day -its the yanks.
if they're coming at night, its the RAF
if you don't see or hear anything at all, it's the Luftwaffe! 😜😂

Aircraft recognition competitions when I did them in the 1980's. 10 aircraft exposers at 1 second. 10 at 1/2 second, 10 at 1/4 second. 3 points for identifying the basic type. A bonus point for identifying the Mark / Version. Was good enough to make the final of the UK national Aircraft recognition competition in 1983, but joined the RAF three days before the event so couldn't attend.
For the "Air Britain" competition, any aircraft that had flown in the UK since 1908 could be in the competition, plus any aircraft build in the USA or USSR.

I recognize this clip from the 1969 movie "Battle of Britain", which has quite the cast, including Michael Caine, Christopher Plumer, Robert Shaw, et al. A good movie, with high production values, only one pointless scene (Susanna York & Plumer in bed), but a somewhat confusing ending if you don't already know how the battle sort of faded into The Blitz. Great, great footage of flying examples of Spits & Harris.

I served with the Royal Observer Corps until its stand down in 1992. Post-war the Corps took on a nuclear war reporting role & a backup meteorological role. Most of the personnel were spare time, with a cadre of full-time staff. RAF uniform & rank was still used, with some changes.
During D-Day 796 Observers were stationed on board ships for aircraft spotting & identification duties. They temporarily became part of the Royal Navy. They could wear a 'Seaborne' shoulder flash post-war.
At a training event in about 1990, I saw one 'Seaborne' flash on a uniform - I didn't have the confidence to talk to them about it. I wish I had!

One of the coolest things I've seen was a set of playing cards for poker and whatnot at the Dayton Ohio air museum, that had aircraft silhouettes and names on them, because I'd never thought about that sort of stuff before. Seeing a set of cards that were used by actual people brought home how real those events were, definitely want to go again when I get the chance.

Serving in the military during the Cold War ,I was trained in rapid ID of Warsaw Pact aircraft. Everything from Mig fighters to the big Tupolev "Bear" and everything in between. They tested us on images of the plane from different angles and you had a half-second peek. Yeah, forgive my brag, I scored full marks. 😆 As a result, I can still tell a Flogger from a Foxbat and a Bear from a Badger - but I haven't kept up with anything post 1990.

its interesting hearing about how they evolved their approach to IDing aircraft, especially as someone who plays a lot of combat flight simulators. i started with just the three view silhouettes, but it didnt work too well, then i was taught by someone about some of the specific features you could pick out from a distance to help narrow down what you're looking at. i also have the allies and axis three view pages up on my wall, they're next to an angle-off chart for aerial gunnery.
17:19 -- i actually got this one pretty quick. the two-engined plane on the left has a stubbier nose, which makes it look like a mosquito or HS 129, while the one on the right looked to me like a JU88 or HE111, with no similar allied aircraft i know of looking like that.
Do you have any resources on where to get reproduction allied spotting manuals? it's something i'd like to have my hands on from a practical standpoint of being better-able to ID random WWII aircraft i see

My Dad Michael was a young lad living in Farnham during the War and was trained to identify aircraft to assist the ARP, he also rode his bicycle caring messages to various Observers etc. I asked him " was he frightened " and he said for a young boy it was an exciting adventure, he never spoke of the bad moments in fact people didn't say much about that time and it wasn't the done thing to ask.

@@fonesrphunny7242 "a Minifig won't fit in any of your 48 aircraft cockpit"
Yeah, minifigs are kind of an odd scale. Years ago (in 2008) I made a computer animation of a minifig walking. It was kind of hard for me to figure out how to get a figure with no knees, elbow, or ankles to make a semi-good walking style. There's a bad copy of the animation on my channel. The title is "Copy of LegoWalkBadCopy130305a"
I wish we had minifigs when I was a kid. I loved building with Lego bricks but it was hard to find an appropriately sized figure to act as pilot of my various spaceships and airplanes.

Living where I do, it's always a handy skill to have. I can tell the Battle of Britain flight from the local general aviation types, and the interesting helicopters (army and RAF) from the boring ones (agency rental, that local guy that owns an R44, noisy rich twats). I can't tell twin-engined airliners apart; I don't want to seem racist, but they all look the same to me.

That's why they used P-38s as fleet defense during the D-Day landings, the Germans didn't have any twin boom/single cockpit fighter planes so even a lousy eyeball like mine on an AA gun wouldn't try and shoot them down.

Could you please advise what the central insignia on the wings on your uniform is.
It is a propeller with an odd crown over it.
Dual wings are pilots in British and Commonwealth practice, with the force in letters (RAF, RCAF etc.) in the centre, with the King or Queen's crow above. That doesn't match!

Based on the ribbons below, that uniform belonged to a member with both World War 2 & Korea service. The member also had at least 22 years of service from the CD1 ribbon as well, the earliest which was issued in 1951.
The crown is likely the Tudor crown. The member probably worn their original badge their entire career, and never updated to the version with the St. Edward’s crown.
From my review, the Triple Propeller blades are for Flight Engineers.

21:10 Yeah, not how the Renshaw Method works but the Air Force didn't understand it either. The biggest problem with Flash Recognition (as it was also known) is that there were more ways to do it wrong than to do it right. The AF kept "improving" it until it didn't work anymore and then tried to justify through "analysis" why the fault was with the system. Renshaw taught the Navy Instructors to conduct a 30 hour Flash Recognition Course. The Army Air Force pushed a 10-15 hour program and then brought in psychologists to prove the fault wasn't with their execution. And for God's sake, it's pronounced TAH-KIST-TOE-SCOPE.
