Not a big Lennon fan here. He had a nasty side to him, like Ali, who was similarly deified. I didn't like his treatment of George and his smart ass act got old quickly. but I will say this much. Even though the Double Fantasy album likely sold better because of the sentiment over his death, it really was a good album worthy of its success.
Nowadays, most people hear about important events via internet/social media. But back then, regular network TV broke the news for most of us. It was one of those "Where Were You" moments, right up there with the Reagan Assassination attempt, the Space Shuttle Challenger. the death of Elvis, etc.
True, that. A different world today. I personally have Harry Chapin on my list, as I had tickets to his concert the next night and saw on the network news about his untimely and unfortunate death.
I was a very news oriented kid so when Reagan was shot I was captured by the event and coverage. And of course being in high school I had a paper due the next day that I had left to the last second and of course didn't do. But God is merciful in that I left one province in Canada that had plenty of snow days for one more Eastern province that never had any. So the next day there was an ice storm and the buses couldn't run and I think I had my only weather related day off through high school. I then did the paper.
I was working part time and at home when the Challenger blew up. What I remember most (I think) was Dan Rather's reluctance to say the thing blew up. When the NASA PA said "Obviously there's been a major malfunction" I was like "Ya think so Sherlock"

I believe Howard Cosell mentioned something about one of the Beatles, I don't know which one or the actual story itself but I think it may have been important.
I remember watching this game as a 13 year old kid. When it was announced that Lennon had been shot, I made the mistake of telling my folks. They DGAF that Lennon had been shot, and they were pissed at me for staying up to watch the game instead of going to bed as any kid that age would have done.
There is a very interesting video on YT that has the audio portion of the conversation between Gifford and Cosell during the commercial break before the announcement. An uncharacteristically reluctant Cosell is being exhorted by Gifford to tell the story to which Cosell somewhat reluctantly agrees. It's a great TV moment that never made it to TV. This was made almost more poignant by the fact that Lennon was on MNF almost to the day, six years earlier December 9, 1974
@@petegoodwinboston4825 The video is called "ESPN OTL: John Lennon Murder, 30th Anniversary." I didn't want to post it because some channels delete posts with TH-cam videos or references. It tells the whole story including the ABC producer who just happened to be in the hospital when Lennon died.

You’re welcome, John Henry!

Chuck Foreman's final NFL carry of his career occured before Howard Cosell's tragic announcement of John Lennon's death.

Pete, Thank You for posting.

On a night when the game itself became unimportant.
