On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-16-18.
We’re looking at a 1970 Ford Torino Cobra Sportsroof in Yellow Paint. The car features a factory installed 429 CI V8 engine.
The car's Owner is John Charick. John’s had this car since 2003. The car is being shared by Jeff Sneathen of Semo Classic Mustang, who works of freshens this car up for the shows.

A friend that I went to high school with took me to lunch on our last day of school as seniors, in his dad's 1970 429 Ford Torino, similar to this. His was navy blue with white racing stripes up the middle. It had a Hurst 4 speed shifter in it. This one has Mercury center caps on the wheels.

Wow! My father had one exactly like it from the late 70s to the late 90s. Same color and engine. I learned how to drive in that car.

429 CJ was the standard engine in 1970 Torino Cobra. Ford built near 8000 of them.

There's nothing like the sound of a floored quadra-jet. It's exhilarating. Unusual that Ford used it on the 428 but if the had to then they made the right choice. Thanks Lou.

All 428 CJ or SCJ had Holly carbs.
429's came with about 3 different carbs, I think.

This car has the 429 CJ engine. 429 SCJ drag-pack engine is a whole different animal.

My brother has. 1969 Cobra and the title has it that way as well as the badges. It is the Torino body style, fast back with a 428 CJ. 735 dual line Holley. 3.50 rear end and C-6 automatic. The paint is original on the car. 53,000 miles. All that has been replaced is the camshaft. Not a bigger cam but another Ford original part. It had broke in half.

From the front view at the start - I could almost hear this beasty roar! She looks lean, she looks mean - and she rocks! I've probably seen this car - but I really can't recall it if I did. It would not of hurt my feelings to own one. I'm only sad about., no 8-track.., but I'll get over it in a few minutes. :-)

In 1970 if you said I have a 429 Cobra folks knew it was a Torino. Cobra did not come with hideaway head lights among a few other differences.

What about gt hideaway light but with 429 scj drag pack
The Torino was a subseries to the Fairlane which was not a full size car, you had to get a Galaxie for that.

The Aussie 72/73/74/75/75/77/78 coupes were built around this car, evidence is found around the wheel arches, same gutter around the wheel arches and bottom sill. Not many cars had this design. Aussie gutter was even deeper!

4 BTDC is wrong. I owned one of these years ago and raced it the timing is suppose to be set 10 BTDC.

if build with the same thecnology as they had in 1970 this car would sell in 2019 for 24 000$ if you add modern mining, foundry and manufacturing progress the car would be sold for 4900$ ...that tell you how much we get screwed over these days! sad for car lovers and for the health of our society as a whole

No real shock at a Ford with GM parts. The BOSS 429 Air-pump system had a GM Canister unit on it while the 1966-67 Lincoln with the Tilt Steering option was a unit bought from GM .

I was wondering ifbu ever get a chance to feature another 1970 -71 torino with the ribbon tach if u could get a shot of the tach reving . that would be so awesome nevet seen that before. This is not a "J" code. The "J" code was the 429 Super Cobra Jet. 4 bolt main block, 780 Holley, 3:91 or 4:30 rear, and a engine oil cooler which is missing here. False advertising. Buyers beware.

Your info is incorrect. All Torino Cobras w shaker and 429 Cobra Jets are J codes including SCJ's. This car has been to MCACN, trophy winner at Ford/Shelby Nationals and first class winner at San Marino Concourse in California. Very well documented with original window sticker, original sales contract, and Marti Report as J code . I am also the owner.

When new the Cobra was a bargain muscle car like the Roadrunner w/46 more cubic inches & greately improved durability over the FE.

Great car Lou thanks for featuring it. The gentleman does impeccable detailing/resto- really nice. Must say, Ford had REALLY cheesy interiors in the day. My dad had multiple late 60's/early 70's Ford wagons, the interiors were sooo mundane. However, body styling and what's under the hood is what counts here...real beauty.

@ 3 50 the car only sold for roughly $ 4 , 300 buck's in 1970.............. yee haaa..... in 2018 almost 2019 now & this car is easyly going for what $ 75 , 000 bucks or more depending on all sort's of things.........lol

A favorite model of mine. Had one with a 351 in orange with hideaway headlights. As much as I liked the 429, gotta say... the wife's 2011 V6 Sienna is just about as fast 0-60 (maybe faster). Very nice car.

Autolite version of a Qudrajet carb. Holley made a version also. GM Quadjet carbs were JUNK.

A comment about the GM quadrajet carb used
on this engine. It's the
Rochester Quadrajet 4MV dual stage unit. I'm very familiar with these carburetters. Notice the British spelling as I've always been accustomed due to the fact my automotive repair training started in Great Britain. The reason Ford used this carb is because there was a strike a the Motorcraft carburetter division.
So Ford did a deal with GM to supply the carbs needed especially since this was a high performance engine. I've modified quite a few Ford and Chrysler V8 engines using this same
carb in the past with impressive results. So much so that guys begged me to do the conversion to their cars
and pick up trucks for better performance. Those 429 Cobra jets could literally fly in their day. Ford had a "force to be reckoned with" when it came to absolute raw performance especially on the race track which explains why these are so legendary. Have a great day and happy holidays.
