    Thank you Dr. Neil D. Tyson! I know you’re too humble to realize it, which is one of the many qualities that makes so many love you, but you have no idea how much you really have made the world a better place. Even if your contribution to society stopped right now, the invaluable information you’ve disseminated as of this moment will continue to make society a better place for decades to come. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making me so interested in science! I’m sure I’m far from the only one that could say the same thing!

    Great discussion about a great subject! I looked up more info on Dr. Wonterghem, I found an interview at the website for the National Ignition Facility, where he describes his background - and revealed he got to play an "extra" on the set of "Star Trek: Into Darkness", and the NIF was "converted" into a "spaceship". He got to keep his "red shirt" after they were done filming! How cool is that?! :)

      Yes, it's a fact NIF used as a sound stage for ST: Into Darkness. This was the scene where Mr. Scott quits since not allowed to take apart prior to loading the Top Secret Missiles containing Kahn's crew. Go to that scene and then compare to NIF screen shots. All Lab employees were thrilled!

    Neil I have some questions that were burning in my mind throughout the video. One, can the lithium in recycled batteries go in as the fuel to this project? Two, can the lithium that goes in be reused to make new batteries? Third and final question, how much energy is used to get to the base products (overhead/startup) and if they were calculated into the 300MJ? Not assuming you personally know everyone of these answers, but any response provided would be awesome.

    Bruno Van Wonterghem mentioned a goal of firing the inertial confinement fusion reactor 10 times a second instead of once a day. There are 86,400 seconds per day so that would be 864,000 times it would fire per day instead of once a day. One reason it fires once a day as I understand it is to let the system cool down and also the fuel pellet must be placed precisely. Also the fuel cost would be astronomical since the tritium component of the fuel is extremely expensive so its cost needs to be reduced. And also Bruno Van Wonterghem mentioned scaling up the energy output to a gigajoule from the 3 megajoules currently produced. In future broadcasts it would be interesting to hear how these problems might be solved.

  • @ashleyobrien4937
    @ashleyobrien4937 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think a part of the answer was a little bit deceptive, because this isn't sustained fusion at all, in an ideal situation, you would have reached the conditions for fusion to occur, and then continually inject fuel so that it was self sustaining, which is actually the goal with the Tokamac's, but with this method, they need to continuously introduced tiny gold cylinders which have the fuel pellet stored inside it, then the lasers blast it with so much light that the gold vaporizes and emits mega X rays that actually heat the fuel pellet, of course this all happens in almost no time at all, and from what he was saying, the actual success is due to the specific way they engineered the tiny gold cylinder and pellet-these things are really tiny, like millimeters in size, and the reflective surfaces inside it have to be PERFECT-and the way the lasers are focused so that they bounce around in there and all finally direct to the exact position-they don't all come to a single point like you might expect, they create a sphere of x rays that then cause the fuel pellet to implode. I have never been a believer in this type of technology because although they have managed to get the physics right for the pellet heating, the actual energy needed to power all those lasers for a single shot is , a lot, and also the lasers themselves are extremely finicky things requiring cooling to prevent them from cracking due to thermal heat stress, the optics need to be perfectly clean, they require so much power that the grid can't deliver it, so they store it up by charging up a large capacitor bank, so for continuous operation they would need many capacitor banks and advanced lasers because the ones they have now can't fire continuously, I am putting my money on ITER, that will be the real "holy grail" of power generation, a new era for mankind, limitless power will solve almost all of our problems...and we might just get to see that happen...

    Also please talk more about the tritium problem with regards to radioactivity and waste.
