Welcome to Taiwan ! Taiwanese had been forced to change their language to Mandarin Chinese in the past. In my parent's generation, people would be punished in school and public places if they speak mother tongue.
Taiwanese origins from 2 main dialects of southern Hokkian(Minnan) language in China, and then got mixture with plain Formosa aboriginal language and Japanese since 300+ years ago.

其實所有的台語都講得非常好，講台語的老外似乎更讓人驚豔。。。其實台灣大多數的長輩都能聽講國語，傳統市場購物倒是都蠻方便的。我們的傳統市場真是充滿了人情味！
