Those are two Bald Eagles. The 2nd one is immature, probably in its 3rd year, and looks kinda goofy, but they often do at that age. I monitored a nest last year where the individuals looked quite similar. Great video.
@@SlimPotatohead Yes, I was thinking the lighter color bird might be an immature eagle too. I have learned a lot from FOBBV CAM channel about Bald Eagles. The juveniles are dark-colored and the immature are speckled brown and white. Then about 4-5 years old they get the white heads and tails and start nesting. You should look for the bald eagle nests in your area. Nests are made of sticks over many years so they so they are large easily spied.
@@SlimPotatohead I live in KY, and my brother spotted an eagles nest on the local lake. They are uncommon here so he called in to fish and wildlife to report it. They laughed at him and said it was impossible, had to be something else. He replied "you are probably right, but it was dressed like an eagle" They called him back to apologize and gave him a mention when they reported the fact an Eagle had been discovered at the lake. And mentioned him in the article heralding the return of bald eagles to the area.

Most people would have cleared the whole lot, knocked down the cabin and built brand new. By renovating, reusing where possible, and responsible forest management, you have done that property a great service. Really enjoying this cabin series!

Love that the Jack in the pulpits returned after you released them from being trapped by the pile of roofing garbage. Just admiring and keeping the area free of garbage is a big gift you can give to nature.
You did clean up all the glass and nails so mother nature owed you one. In WV the goal is to either cut down ever tree or dump your garbage there. I wish more people used your though process.

If it were I, there would be a multitude of berry bushes and such throughout that new clearing. You would want an asparagus patch off to one side with scattered blueberry and Saskatoon berry bushes, Raspberries, currents, whatever floats the boat, eh? The beauty of that is you now have a bird and animal attractant as well as fresh berries along with preserves for yourself.

For anyone who might read this be aware that there are two types of foam cans. For window gaps use the non expanding. I learned this the hard way. I cracked my windows.
Actually, all foam expands to some degree. The key is to use the correct foam for the gap size. In my case, a low expansion foam was adequate. Thanks! SP

The ferns are lovely. If you look online for native plants for your area and light/moisture levels, you can plant and wait for beneficial insects and more birds. You probably already know this. I've been delighted with my results in Missouri. Love your videos.
To help with the nails and other metal. You can buy a maybe rent, a very large magnet. The kind I speak of would be about 2 feet wide and on wheels. Long handle, just roll the magnet over any area you believe that has nails or scrap metal.

I like the progression on the cabin and I love the nature shots. When I had to thin areas with too many saplings. I would go back and throw some native wildflower seeds not only does it help it doesn't help brighten the area but the pollinators bees and butterflies love it. Thanks for the great videos

Tree thinning of saplings in a mature forest is recommended to be done every 10 to 15 years to reduce the abundance of fuels which cause catastrophic wildfires. The existing mature tree can live for centuries. The thinking has significantly changed regarding forest management in recent years. Looking at old photos shows there were historically fewer trees per acre very few saplings and not a lot of undergrowth brush either but instead more grass. The natural fires that were not managed by man quickly burned themselves out due to lack of fuel and they never got hot enough to destroy the mature trees and only burned up the small saplings. So do not feel guilty about removing pretty much all the saplings. They are not needed for a healthy forest eco system. Few of them survived to become mature trees. That having been said you do need some ground covering plants with roots that help prevent top soil erosion on sloped ground. There will be list of suitable local area native plants for that purpose from forestry and agricultural agencies. Non native plants should not be introduced for that purpose.

We vaulted the ceiling in my little 2 bed/1 bath house and made a loft over the bedroom half, it looks really cool to have the exposed 100 yr old lumber and I gained a good dry storage area for all my camping gear that I don't want down the basement. :)

To cover your log border wall and make it look pretty as well as it being a way to give back to nature, you could plant Periwinkle - it's a fast growing perennial ground cover that has little purple flowers in spring - it's a hardy plant that will do well in a shaded area. You could also consider planting some Hostas which come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes and colours and get bigger and bigger each year.
Dont think of being selfish. Think of the thinning of the trees as protection from fires and fire mitigation to help your insurance policy. Great video. CHEERS from Colorado
Don't feel guilty about cutting those sapplings down. We brought an arborist in when my DH and I had a disagreement about cutting down trees. He told us they would never amount to anything because they were too close together and by cutting them down we would open the area up to new vegetation that the local wildlife would love. He was right, the area is beautiful now with natureal ground cover and we put some berry bushes out there (that would be a good idea for your property). Love watching the little critters now.

You certainly have chosen a great spot! And with the new deck & windows, you can enjoy it more. Before you choose plants, you might want consider the seasons you'll be present to enjoy them and determine whether you will be there while they become established. Knowing the way you think things through though, you are probably already doing that!

Nature is nature. The eagle was just having lunch. I’ve seen a hawk swoop down and capture a chipmunk. I also saw a bug flat out murder another bug. It’s simply life existing. Not always pretty but it’s survival. Cabin is looking better and better. You have a beautiful property
The cabin and its surroundings are looking so good Slim. Every video reflects major improvements. It’s wonderful to see nature recapturing its rightful place instead of piles of waste left behind by others. Eagles are very majestic. Twice a day I get to see a pair of bald eagles fishing the reservoir next to my house; usually around 6:30 am and then again at dusk. They have a nest just a couple miles from my home; haven’t seen that but I know where it is located because it’s a documented nest. It’s enough just to have the privilege of watching these majestic creatures each day. Take care and stay well. Thanks for sharing.

I may be wrong...but I'm pretty sure that's a juvenile eagle - not an osprey. Osprey have more white on their head and do not have yellow beaks but black. They also have white feet not yellow. I've been watching/studying eagles for years now here in NS and also am familiar with osprey - our provincial bird. Love your videos Slim - especially the ones where you travel through the US!

We live in the TN mtns and have spiders that size, wolf spiders. I thought spiders that size only lived in the jungle til we saw them up here. They startle me every time I see one. I’m loving your cabin series!

I think most people would agree that we are living in a time when it is so important to make an example of thoughtfulness and caring for others and caring for nature in our lives. I recall crying several times when I read Braiding Sweetgrass, there were so many passages that really hit home for me and reminded me of my family. Your cabin is looking great!
You are doing a good thing for the forest by thinning out the smaller trees. We have lots of Harris' Hawks here and this goes on all the time in my neighbors tree or on our backyard wall, its life. Such a beautiful place and love all the bird sounds.

Nice work. I was in the USAF and in Alaska,Yukon Terr., and British Columbia but not your area. Don't know if you even have bees in your area , however if you do place native flowers in that cleared area. You will have constant reminders, and bees and others will enjoy also.
Slim, that’s a nice size cabin and I think if that wood burning stove is in good shape, it’d be better to keep it cause you will always find downed trees that you can gather up before the next winter❄️rolls in! You can build a wood shed and start looking for fallen trees, cut them into nice smaller logs and store them so you’ll have enough wood for the cold season! You can also insulate your walls, attic, etc. to provide extra warmth!😁. Just some thoughts! Stay safe Good peoples!
Hi Carol! Good suggestions. I inherited a woodpile, however the logs are getting a little funky. Insulation is on the list, and it would be nice to insulate both the vaulted ceiling as well as under the floor. Too early to tell what I can accomplish this year though. Thanks! SP

Travelled from BC to New Brunswick. Enjoying every minute, exploring the sights, sounds, smells, amazing food and people. Staying at Provincial parks, heading to Bay Fundy, after a wonderful 4days at New River Beach.
Your ideas about giving back is correct. You’ve given Jack (In The Pulpit) an opportunity to grow, given the tree roots more air, light and water. Compost the pine needles you moved so the ground will have more fertilizer. The Mother (Nature) will be happy.

Harbor Freight has those magnets very reasonably priced. Not sure if they have stores in Canada. I bought one for $18 US

The eagle and osprey calmly in such proximity was fascinating. Pine needles make goid (if acidic) mulch. Loved the forest bird songs!
That would never happen. That is two eagles. An Osprey and an eagle would lock talons and fight over food and territory.

To cover your log border wall and make it look pretty as well as it being a way to give back to nature, you could plant Periwinkle - it's a fast growing perennial ground cover that has little purple flowers in spring - it's a hardy plant that will do well in a shaded area. You could also consider planting some Hostas which come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes and colours and get bigger and bigger each year.

Dont think of being selfish. Think of the thinning of the trees as protection from fires and fire mitigation to help your insurance policy. Great video.

Don't feel guilty about cutting those sapplings down. We brought an arborist in when my DH and I had a disagreement about cutting down trees. He told us they would never amount to anything because they were too close together and by cutting them down we would open the area up to new vegetation that the local wildlife would love. He was right, the area is beautiful now with natureal ground cover and we put some berry bushes out there (that would be a good idea for your property). Love watching the little critters now.

You certainly have chosen a great spot! And with the new deck & windows, you can enjoy it more. Before you choose plants, you might want consider the seasons you'll be present to enjoy them and determine whether you will be there while they become established. Knowing the way you think things through though, you are probably already doing that!

Nature is nature. The eagle was just having lunch. I’ve seen a hawk swoop down and capture a chipmunk. I also saw a bug flat out murder another bug. It’s simply life existing. Not always pretty but it’s survival. Cabin is looking better and better. You have a beautiful property
The cabin and its surroundings are looking so good Slim. Every video reflects major improvements. It’s wonderful to see nature recapturing its rightful place instead of piles of waste left behind by others. Eagles are very majestic. Twice a day I get to see a pair of bald eagles fishing the reservoir next to my house; usually around 6:30 am and then again at dusk. They have a nest just a couple miles from my home; haven’t seen that but I know where it is located because it’s a documented nest. It’s enough just to have the privilege of watching these majestic creatures each day. Take care and stay well. Thanks for sharing.

I may be wrong...but I'm pretty sure that's a juvenile eagle - not an osprey. Osprey have more white on their head and do not have yellow beaks but black. They also have white feet not yellow. I've been watching/studying eagles for years now here in NS and also am familiar with osprey - our provincial bird. Love your videos Slim - especially the ones where you travel through the US!

We live in the TN mtns and have spiders that size, wolf spiders. I thought spiders that size only lived in the jungle til we saw them up here. They startle me every time I see one. I’m loving your cabin series!

I think you are giving back to nature with your videos and your attitude, the fact that your videos allow people to see a man who cares for nature in a thoughtful way and shares nature as you have, is, I hope, helping to spread a good human-nature ethos. I think most people would agree that we are living in a time when it is so important to make an example of thoughtfulness and caring for others and caring for nature in our lives. I recall crying several times when I read Braiding Sweetgrass, there were so many passages that really hit home for me and reminded me of my family. Your cabin is looking great!

You are doing a good thing for the forest by thinning out the smaller trees. We have lots of Harris' Hawks here and this goes on all the time in my neighbors tree or on our backyard wall, its life. Such a beautiful place and love all the bird sounds.

Nice work. I was in the USAF and in Alaska,Yukon Terr., and British Columbia but not your area. Don't know if you even have bees in your area , however if you do place native flowers in that cleared area. You will have constant reminders, and bees and others will enjoy also.

Slim, that’s a nice size cabin and I think if that wood burning stove is in good shape, it’d be better to keep it cause you will always find downed trees that you can gather up before the next winter❄️rolls in! You can build a wood shed and start looking for fallen trees, cut them into nice smaller logs and store them so you’ll have enough wood for the cold season! You can also insulate your walls, attic, etc. to provide extra warmth!😁. Just some thoughts! Stay safe Good peoples!
Hi Carol! Good suggestions. I inherited a woodpile, however the logs are getting a little funky. Insulation is on the list, and it would be nice to insulate both the vaulted ceiling as well as under the floor. Too early to tell what I can accomplish this year though. Thanks! SP

Adventure Van Man carries a magnet bar (like you'd use to mount tools on a wall) on a loop of string and uses it to pick up nails at campsites. Slick.
Travelled from BC to New Brunswick. Enjoying every minute, exploring the sights, sounds, smells, amazing food and people. Staying at Provincial parks, heading to Bay Fundy, after a wonderful 4days at New River Beach.
Your ideas about giving back is correct. You’ve given Jack (In The Pulpit) an opportunity to grow, given the tree roots more air, light and water. Compost the pine needles you moved so the ground will have more fertilizer. The Mother (Nature) will be happy.
