2020's The New Mutants is the final Fox X-Men movie that ends the franchise in a pretty low note. The most interesting thing about this movie is the high number of times it was delayed during the last few years, almost as if Fox didn't want anyone to see it. There were talk of New Mutants reshoots that never ultimately ended up happening, but for some reason Disney that they didn't even put it on Disney plus. In today's Anatomy of a Failure, let's see how reshoots and reworkings in the pre-production stage ensured that this movie never worked so we'll know what to watch out for in the future. Then all that's left to do is see what Marvel and Kevin Feige do with the X-men and the Fantastic Four in the MCU.

The New Mutants (2020)
This sci-fi horror film directed and co-written by Josh Boone is based on the Marvel comics of the same name. I kinda made a similar mistake with my first book The Children Must Feed. I tried to do to many different things, the story is basically just a horror movie in book format. But halfway through the book I added 4 more characters and another sub-plot. I eventually went back and edited the book getting rid of things I felt were not need and making it more coherent. It's still a little rough around the edges but my 3 books after that I made sure to stay focused on the main story and not worry about adding extra things just for shock value.
Rented it two days ago, fell asleep in 20 minutes, the next night I tried again, started it at the 20 minute mark, fell asleep in 12 minutes. Best movie I ever rented, as I suffer from insomnia

Great: X-Men, The Wolverine, X-Men: Apocalypse, Logan (This would be in the best section, though the reason it's in great is mainly because I found it too depressing which took a bit of enjoyment away from it, but it was still very good)
Okay: The New Mutants (I actually found it fun, just looking for a fun time) Deadpool and Deadpool 2 (They were okay)

Interestingly, this was originally going to be send in the 80s with McAvoy reprising his role but the new studio head at Fox thought Apocalypse killed interest in the prequels.

X-men has a lot of potencial for body horror. Like, imagine a character with similar powers to Logan stuck on an endless cycle of being mutilated, regenerate, then mutilated again, Prometheus style. Not to mention all the mutants that look like freaks.

Well there was one graphic novel where everything that could go to shit in Marvel universe pretty much went to shit, such as Bruce Banner being mutated into tumor-filled body monstrosity instead of The Hulk, Fantastic Four members being turned inside-out from solar radiation, Punisher being gunned down by criminals on street right away, Magneto is insane and kept in special prison because he is unable to control his powers, one of the X-man (I think Jean) is herione addict-prostitute. It was pretty grim and dark.
Also, Immortal Hulk was pretty much body horror and quite good, and then like 20 issues later, they started inserting some political nonsense such as Hulk leading the BLM protest and being on global warming protests, etc. It became a huge mess so I just gave up. First 20 or so issue were really good, unique spin on Hulk. It was basically horror comic but then as usual, Marvel decided they don't want sales so they "fix it".
Even in the og X-men film by mr p3do atleast you had that scene where senator kelly bloated up like a dead body and disintegrated. I was haunted by it, even though some elements are slightly boring.
It really says a lot when you can stack the cast with the best young talents of the generation and then totally waste it with crappy accents and one dimensional characters...

Think this movie could have benefited if it was marketed as a teen horror movie and not revealed to be X-men related till you saw it (kind of like Split/in breakable).
I find it funny u bring split bc Anna Taylor Joy (the Russian girl) is also in this movie. But yeah I do think this movie could’ve benefited from that sort of premise

Actually the complete breakaway from the original content should have made it it's own thing instead of piggybacking onto a good franchise. The "Russian Girl" literally got kidnapped by the ruler of Limbo and taught how to use black magic and she eventually defeated him and became the reluctant ruler of that relm.
Split could bank on M. Night Shyamalan's name for marketing. I think if The New Mutants tried that it would have quickly been forgotten. The biggest gimmick of the film was that this was the first Marvel horror film. Take that away and you don't have much left, just another cheap jumpscare horror film.

The worst part about this is ths studio wont rightfully see their mistakes and learn from them, but rather blame the movie's failure on the marketing or on the writers that they sabotaged amd continue repeating their mistakes.
I mean the studio failed and was sold off to Disney; once the sale is complete most of the executives are probably going to be fired
Studio executives are *never* wrong, its always the writers, or the director, or the marketing dept, or the publicity campaign, or the....
They must be correct, or they wouldn't be executives.
I agree in part, but one difficult thing about blaming reshoots is that it assumes that a first iteration was actually good. We can say "Wow this film obviously suffered from the issues associated with rewrites," but we *can't* say "this film is worse than what it would have been without those rewrites." Sure, rewrites/shoots introduce new problems, but that doesn't mean those problems are greater than those of the original film (despite what Josh Trank might insist).
I'm not saying the final product was definitively better than whatever the film was before reshoots -only that we have no idea. So, perhaps it was the writers! Perhaps the first draft was just a mess, and the studio decided stepping in was worth the downside. Perhaps stepping in was worth it! Perhaps it wasn't. We just don't know.
@@DanielFolsom You have a good point, and I'd like to further that one by saying that the director Josh Boone, also didn't like how the movie was turning out by 2018 and had his own rewrite as well as a set of reshoots planned. That director is relatively new, but he did direct The Fault in Our Stars, which was fairly good movie, so I trust that he could see this film not being up to par at that time.
Reports suggested that there were problems deciding on how to handle the reshoots for over a year--some blame was put on Boone there, but some other blame was put on the "creative team", which is what @Filmento had been talking about throughout this video. Since the reshoots seemed to have never happened, it looks like the movie we got was based mostly on footage from that earlier draft.

I had such high hopes for this movie, and I was so disappointed when I finally saw it. It had such potential and it was a wasted opportunity to tell another side of the mutant struggle other than Xavier’s optimistic view, what a shame.
Honestly yes the X-men have always lacked in the people/organizations between the 3 extremes of Magneto's Mutant Supremists, Xaiver's largely pacifist turn the other cheek when you don't have to be heroes, and Weapon X mutants must be controlled or purged.
I feel like that New Mutants should've been a mini-series instead. They could've been Marvel/Disney/Fox's equivalent to Doom Patrol.

I feel like so much of this movie could have been saved if the doctor (or group of doctors) were a more antagonistic force. If it had felt like these children had no control over their greater course, these small acts of rebellion and impulse would be easily characterized as grasping for autonomy. It feels like some scenes had this in mind, like when Illyana gets herself in trouble and seems happy to be put in solitary, because it's a choice she made, but even that then clashed with the amount of actual autonomy these kids had.
Imagine being the “genius” that put this film in theaters, despite the pandemic. Makes me realize that even if I’m a complete failure, there will always be people that are dumber than I am.
Or, they did it to minimize the amount of people watching this mess, and they can write it off as a loss for tax purposes.
Putting it into theaters during the pandemic has not really anything to do with being dumb. They simply didnt care for this movie that was collecting dust sitting on the shelf. They just shat it out to theaters to be finally done with it. They simply didnt care. It would've been a flop with or without the pandemic. On top of that, it was the last X-Men Fox movie which ultimately doesnt matter anyway since they are going to reboot the entire thing in the MCU now anyway.
I would imagine they did that on purpose. They can then blame the financial failure on the pandemic instead the weak product they out.

Felt more like a pilot episode for a TV-series, dragged out, the whole movie I was thinking that the mental institution was a temporary location, not the place for the whole movie, X-men tended to be a bit more grand. The powers are more like from some asian mmo and not enough reasoning.

They are based off a mix of concepts from Marvel. They're supposed to be faceless tall, skinny, tattooed Russian mobsters further elongated and demonized by Illyana's younger self's memories. The Smiley Face masks are probably a reference to The Right.

The movie looked so good in the first trailer, such a shame movie executives are never even remotely aware of what their audiences want and they butchered the movie before our eyes for years, before releasing this. They should release the original cut...
There was no original cut. The execs were involved at the writing stage so there is no different footage to make a new cut and there were no reshoots.
No, it didn't look good at all; I knew it was going to be a shit movie. Also, there is no original cut; there's no way they completed filming before bringing in new people, and this movie is definitely not worth giving any more thought.

It was never look good to begin with. When the first teaser/trailer came out, it was nothing more than a cashgrab that trying to capitalized the success of Stranger Things at the time.
Throughout the entire movie I thought Dr Reyes was the same doctor from Logan who told Logan to look after the girl. Then bam she got mauled worst than Leo.
It's such a waste. The original New Mutant's comic ended and led to the first issue of X Force. Fox had the formula to print money.

They did hire a brazilian Guy to play the Brazilian character. They testes a bunch of Brazilian actors for that, ignoring their skin color, and he was the one they chose for whatever reason.

I feel like the "getting better" scenes didn't go anywhere because in reality, "getting better" wasn't the doctor's goal. It was making better killers for the Essex corp. Of course, that still doesn't make it interesting.

So her dad died and everybody else, and she didn't want to see any proof (or hold a funeral or something like that) just party with the "gang"?! Very realistic character, very easy to get behind her.
To be fair when my mom passed when I was 14, I was so upset and didn't know how to express feelings. I ended up going to party after party, stayed sober for the funeral and at the reception I started up again. Granted I didn't see that with her, besides the suicide attempt, but that was too easily talked down. I thought this was a good movie, definitely not the best movie ever but I have seen way worse.

@@notmocka exactly. I think I would freak out more. I did get uprooted and move far away to live with my dad I just met so similar i guess. Still I felt she was just cold and didn't really let reality kick in. Could be a reaction, but then she fell in love. It would have been one thing if she fell in lust with whoever, but it seemed more than that (and I'm pretty sure the two are a thing in the comics I haven't kept up with them like I should). I did enjoy the movie and would like a sequel (maybe mix it with the Deadpool universe). I'm just not sure the acting was 100% but it was pulled 7 or so ways and you can't blame the cast for that.
It might be a coincidence that the guy who burned his girlfriend only does tasks with water involved.
The movie reads like a bad fanfiction. It takes the liberty of assuming you already have an overview of the x-men universe, without really putting in the time or effort into introducing you to the world organically. The plot is semi incoherent and things happen because reasons^tm. those reasons being the need to push the movie forward so it can finally end.

This was exactly how I felt about that terrible Fantastic 4 reboot they tried to pull a while back as well. Bad fanfiction with a healthy helping of needless angst.
I could say the same thing about any MCU movie... they take the liberty of assuming you have an overview of the wider Marvel Universe. You don't go into Endgame without knowing about the rest of the MCU, and you don't go into New Mutants without knowing about the X-men universe.

5. joining the rest because there is a sliver of hope to change the world, even though his quite happy the world now as it is, knowing it might be dangerous to his already perfect retirement
6. final battle - losing three two one battle
7. characters popping up when the enemy has the upper hand as back up (don't have to know who they are, it already epic as it is)
8. Finally sacrificing himself since knowing... even with all of that heroes popping up they still losing the battle.. - snap the enemy away sacrificing his perfect life with his family.
9.getting back at thanos saying i am inevitable with his own line I am Iron man (don't have to know the first movie, it is a good dialogue on its own)....
Without all that, his death and sacrifice probably won't have the same impact.

Probably because you know that in order to even know who the majority of characters are and their motivations, you HAVE to have seen most of the other movies. If you hadn't watched previous movies, and you go into even Infinity War blind to the rest of the MCU, you'd be left confused, who is Thor and Loki, what is the significance of their relationship, why are they in space, why is the Hulk with them, who is the guy with the metal arm living peacefully in Wakanda? and on and on and on.
It's a weak criticism to throw at New Mutants when you wilfully ignore it in any other franchise.
Oh and make no mistake, I LOVE the MCU, but I'm not shallow enough to ignore it's flaws.

She thus caused the destruction of her own village and her dad's death. Which she never realizes and doesn't get explored.

I felt like Anya Taylor-Joy was perfectly cast as Magik yet the movie failed to deliver us Magik...so... I'm confused with that one. That should've worked... She looked spot on, she's a good actress...what happened!? Also the Sunspot guy... when watching the trailer didn't know which mutants are in it and when I saw him, boom, instanty knew thats Sunspot. So I guess...the movie actually had a good casting here and there. Shame it panned out the way it did. Hey, I think it's watchable.... you just need to pass some will checks and not to fail some sleep rolls... Shame...

The casting was simply superb, first time I saw the trailer, I knew who everyone was and they felt RIGHT. Problem is that New Mutants has messy backstories galore, so trying to "clean them up", was probably step one down cliche lane. It also gets some of the characters just wrong. Rahne works pretty well, Illyanna/Magik is just off. She's that one kid who is afraid of nothing cause she's been through (and in the comic, took over) hell, literally. Sam is a bit too awkward, he's supposed to be the big brother/first sergeant of the group, simple straightforward and more than a little awkward (with Roberto providing the smooth, and the immaturity). Dani is supposed to be the tough one the leader, of course the whole thing is that the bear is her creation, and this story originally kicked off when she turned to face it.

The soon to be released Chaos Walking sounds just like this. They filmed it in 2017 and it's being released in 2021. It has had 8 writers in total working on the script and 2 different directors!

12:30 I think that’s what (one of the) writers wanted. Problem is, the characters don’t really ever question if they are “getting better” and don’t ever try to find out why. They are just passive characters pushed forward by a nonexistent plot, because one person wanted them to actively look for and find the hidden evil, and one person wanted a sit-com.

Wow. “It is what it is” is probably the best way to describe this movie. The reason this movie kind of made sense to me was that, from the first line spoken, it told me it was just going to be playing cliche bingo with no real meaning behind it or meat on the bones. Therefore nothing seemed too out of the blue or poorly tied together because the movie told me that’s what it is from the beginning. That’s not an excuse for how bad it is. It’s an incredibly mediocre movie and it’s very consistent in its mediocrity.
I already forgot this movie existed....
This concept had all the potential to cater to a horror-centric mature audience, but they just had to slap that PG-13 on it to get the "kids" for more revenue.

My feel is that this was meant to be R-Rated with tie in with Logan. They at least got the Mutant Power right(Illiana Rasputin aka Magik actually beside the Terrible Russian Accent was actually amazing)
This movie not only needed reshoots, it needed basic editing...but well, Disney bought Fox before they could do any of those things, and the end result is...what we got.

I mean, if this movie would have been shown to test audiences, they would have included A LOT MORE Magick in reshoots, just as they would have fixed a lot of continuity errors.
Its pretty obvious that what we got is the first cut of the movie, and first cuts are never intended to be released, they are intended to be shown to test audiences to see how they can improve it.
This was never the case for New Mutants.
