Challenges of Licensure by Endorsement for Internationally Educated Physical Therapists

  • Becoming a U.S.-licensed physical therapist as someone who attained entry-level education internationally is a feat. To apply for a license to practice in the state where you live you must have your entry-level academic course work accredited, take any necessary courses to gain U.S. equivalency, pass an English language proficiency exam, and, finally, take the national physical therapy exam. This expensive procedure can take years to complete. If you ever decide to move to a different state, you may be asked to go through many of the same steps all over again. Panelists will discuss the challenges they have faced when trying to move to different states to pursue work or educational opportunities and how you can advocate for the removal of unnecessary requirements.

I am so thankful I found this video, now 2 years later! Especially now as i prepare to take the NPTE as an IEPT currently outside the US.
Fortunately i meet the requirements for Florida; but learning now that the endorsement process is NOT straightforward is both eye-opening and mind-boggling.
I didn't even know that there was a requirement for Experience in the US, much less that a whole other re-evaluation would be needed, not to mention "general education courses" - even after being licensed!
This is indeed discriminatory, and one can't help consider the longstanding notion, that these requirements are - bottom line - actually meant to DETER us foreign-trained PTs! This seems far more apparent now, unfortunately.
I do hope things will get better soon - and I would like to be a part of this APTA IEPT section, and this movement, to help make this better. To help make the requirements for us IEPTs level across the country. I never knew about this APTA Section until now - but i would like to get involved.

I am Mexican born turned US citizen. I have a bacherlos degree from USA but due to PT school cost, I am considering going to study in Mexico City. My concern is the transfer of degree back to USA as physical therapist now require a doctorate. Essentially, I am trying to learn information to not waste my time, money, and effort of this idea is a bust. Can you help?
