    I absolutely love Kino. Their range is so eclectic that often times they introduce me to films I never knew I'd like. Furthermore it's those smaller titles that get the HD treatment that find new fans.

    loved the interview. I love Kino just for what they did with fantastic tv from the sixties and seventies. The Oute Limits sets, and Night Gallery are truly works of art. Extras and everything are all simply amazing. Got one more Night Gallery I think waiting in the wings. It never looked better and are prize possesions.

And some of the reasons behind their decisions. Please try to get more interviews from different labels.

      Jeff Harrison, founder of Umbrella Entertaiment: th-cam.com/video/6TdSVv7Jmdc/w-d-xo.html
      Next week, I'll be posting a new interview with Francesco Simeoni, a 12-year veteran of Arrow Video and the founder of a new label, Radiance Films.
      Other labels have been approached, but haven't yet taken me up on the offer. Stay tuned!

    Thanks for this great interview, very, very interesting!!
    Wanted to make suggestions on questions if you do a followup at a later time with Frank about the whole acquisition process: How does it work? Does he approach a studio about films he'd like to license or do studios put the word out on available films? maybe describe the negotiation process. He mentioned buying film packages from studios-How are those packages put together, how many films in them etc? maybe some rough budgeting/cost numbers of the actual licensing+restoration process?
    Time from license to actual release? How many projects in the works at a given time? What kinda work goes into producing exclusive special features? Dream projects he'd love to do? Films he really wanted to do that the studio just won't license, How many people IS Kino Lorber and kinda what do they all do?
    Thanks in advance!!

    Very informative Interview and inside view on a label that so far wasn’t very public regarding TH-cam or Podcast appearances! Hope you‘ll get the chance for at least one follow up episode. It’s so sad to hear, that those amazing actors sets (bought all of them say one so far) haven’t sold well enough to continue. KL Insider also stated on forum posts, that they most likely will not release any further serials, what is also quite disappointing, because of underperforming sales numbers. I hoped that channels like yours would have brought a bit more interest to serials during the last few years. Maybe you could bring this topic up, if there’s ever a second appearance of KL on your Podcast. Keep up the fine work and greetings from Germany! Chris

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's what we're all wondering! Presumably, Disney is still figuring out an approach for how best to monetize those Fox movies, but the Disney purchase of Fox was bad news for movie fans and something I have been speaking out against for years because I knew this is what would happen if Disney bought Fox. Five years after I made this video, it's still one of the least-watched things I've ever done: th-cam.com/video/tOTIUtYhHbQ/w-d-xo.html

  • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
    @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I am glad Kino is putting in more effort on select titles and I do appreciate the massive amount of catalog releases they do. However one still has to sift through their catalog to pick out the spiffier discs with newer transfers or extras from the majority which are merely a preexisting master on a disc. Frequently I have upgraded titles for a UK counterpart with better encoding or gone for a better version from another label.
    The Leone reissues are a good example of the newer mindset: some good efforts put in with what is available, some participation with fan historians…then a compromised Fistful of Dollars disc due to the mistakes of the restoration and a compromised FAFDM release because of MGM’s horrible audio and missing a few seconds of footage in the German release. The former is not Kino’s fault and they did what they could with the color. The latter has issues because Kino stepped into Ritrovata’s work so they wouldn’t mess up the color. The audio and sync is MGM’s fault but Kino shouldn’t have missed footage when adding back everything else.
    I do appreciate that they keep their prices low in order to make every release affordable. But they still don’t have the quality control levels of the best boutique labels. Their attitude at times in not addressing mistakes is frustrating. They do a far better job than some others and especially most studio labels who never step up to the plate in the way they should.
    At their best I do think Kino, in terms of US labels, rivals Criterion. (who is more and more catering to select crowds and not putting in the effort for proper encoding). Warner Archive is still the best US label in terms of presentation quality.
    At the end of the day boutique labels are how we are preserving the medium today. With modern concerns it is a victory for any physical release. Each label has their own approaches and it is ultimately a business which is understandable. But it is important to point out legitimate concerns and make criticisms when it is necessary.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree that criticisms are important, especially because they provide opportunities for growth. What I think we're speaking to in this interview is the recent trend of fans acting like they know more about movies than the people who made them, saying outrageous things like movies should be taken away from the cinematographers and directors when it comes to color timing and restoration. There's a few hundred loud Reddit users and forum posters who simply want to plant a flag and be the first to blow the whistle on some flaw, real or imagined. A bit of ADR dialogue can be a fraction of a second out of sync and they're demanding recalls. Legitimate criticisms should always be heard and real errors do happen, but too many people are crying wolf right now and muddying those waters with the goal of saying "gotcha." It makes the legitimate criticisms harder to see and hear, because they're buried under nitpicks.

      Not too long ago, I saw someone online say that the cinematographer shouldn't be the one to decide how a 4K is supposed to look! That one really takes the cake. The idea that the person who actually shot the movie and chose the visual look of the film shouldn't do the same thing for the 4K version is quite a stretch to me.

I discovered Kino Lorber several years back when they started releasing early Hitchcock classics. I had no idea who they were before that and was surprised to see the wide range of films they offered. Now I never miss a sale. Kino covers such a wide array of genres and decades that there are always must haves in their roster of new releases. A shame that classic film fandom continues to decline. Keno has good transfers and they tend to pick good titles to release but it's frustrating that they randomly give us alternate artwork and don't list it as a feature(which I enjoy with a title that comes with a slipcover . They tend to use the 2.0 track, rather than existing 5.1 tracks as an extra option and they don't list on the back what the audio track is so I really on the Blu-ray site. Also they tend to be light on the special features(which is fine if they're cheaper). And I'm really not a fan of them having the same artwork on all the discs but I would put up with that if they fix these other issues.
