@@SteveGad the guys got a lot of good ideas floating around that blurry head of his, but when I heard he'd written this with MES in mind I thought that was a class act ✌️
I come back to this video time and again Its just mesmerising to me. Him strutting around with his lyric sheet like it's a rehearsal not 1 single fuck given till the very end
The funniest thing about this performance is that Mark E. Smith is actually reading the gibberish he's shouting from notes he wrote down earlier. Legendary.
Neil - Snoop did Del The Funky Homosapien's verses in Clint Eastwood. Gorillaz's Glastonbury set featured Lou Reed, Shaun Ryder, Bobby Womack, De La Soul all doing a song each - yet idiot reviewers were like meh. Jesse - FYI Mark's favourite rapper was Kool Keith
Because Gorillaz was under-prepared for this show. They were a last-minute replacement for U2 and didn't rehearsed as they should have to give a clean show. I personnally like this performance though :-)
0:28 - 10,000 teeny boppers ask "who the fuck is that guy?" A question probably not answered after three minutes of incomprehensible vocals. But I was at this gig Mark E Smith, and I went fucking mental when you came on, you legend. I thought he was banned from glastonbury!
Damon Albarn looks furious at the drummer @ 1:37. I was there and they put on a great show, but they were definitely under-rehearsed. Mark E. Smith is a bit of a loose cannon as it is, but I think the late nature of their booking (suddenly replacing U2 with a show much more technical than many others) showed. Bobby Womack was all over the place by the end of Stylo, and an ailing Lou Reed and unforseen absence of Mos Def can't have helped matters!
Loving his lyrics sheet, was gutted not to be at the front, I was stuck at the back of the crowd. Was amazing when they played this, but I couldnt see anything!
I've been hunting down here for the reason. I think you're right. Although go back and check the context because you wrote this five years ago. Mark E Smith. I think in this show Mark just took this whole number over, and made it his own, cut Damon out. And while he's busy complaining, he's part of one of the great rock performances of all time.
@@ChrisBrown-999 There's an alternate recorded version of this track out there with a lot more MES vocal parts, including a lot of the lines from this performance. I don't think it's unexpected, plus he was well known for being unpredictable and doing his own thing. Really don't think Damon would be annoyed at him over this performance.
reading the comments you guys are good and really knowledgeable. About 2 three years ago I stumbled across Stylo video on MTV and was like what the heck is this then Bobby Womack sings it too. amazeballs!. Then I found the Gorrillaz on TH-cam and said, let me take a listen to Broken, and bawled my eyes out. Then listened and watched Clint Eastwood thing and when the Gorillas in the video did a little MJ Thriller move in the grave yard scene I was hooked. Big MJ fan here, I'm a Gorillaz newbie, but reading your comments helps to get some background. I'm sorry but I'm guilty of loving to watch this live concert. The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble has been to NY a few times but I keep missing their shows never new they existed until now,. I have to see these guys. Also became a fan of Little Dragon. Im looking forward to Gorrillaz new music. And that Damon guy is soooooo cute too LOL!
I don't know if you notice but Damon gets mad at Case Bronw the drummer who had done all the history of phases 1, 2 and 3 that's why there is no history from plastic beach :(
Phase 1 wasn’t Cass, also PB did have a story but that moreso was cancelled by their label, IIRC. It does explain why Humanz, Now Now, Song Machine and Cracker Island lacked in the story department however
+Benjamin Quintanilla He's mad at the drummer, they're giving each other looks, because the drummer messed up and played a beat too much.... you don't really notice, but if it's your song, you'll notice!
Mark E. Smith messed up his performance in Dublin last year too. He went to 3 mics before finding the right one. and then he went around and changed all the settings on the big amps. roadies had to come out and change them back.
this is when gorillaz's story and characterization went way downhill. when damon kicked out cass. now 2D is clueless, murdoc is suddenly a lot more sympathetic, russel is nonexistent and noodle can now change the fabric of reality.
Such a shame to see the entire Gorillaz part of Gorillaz just sorta fall to the curb and get thrown around. Not even sure it should've come back without Cass.
They all got to be in The Fall for 4 minutes.
Absolutely honor for them!
If it's MES and your granny on the bongos...
If it’s mark and Damon on keyboards it’s the fall
@@JoshuaRoss2 I'm loving how every time the camera pans to Damon Albarn he looks really fucking worried
I once got a lift home from MES in a van, post gig. Does that count ?
The man I would least expect to see on the main stage at Glastonbury is Mark E Smith.
This is pure gold.
"You cannot believe or credit this."
And yes, absolute gold.
Think he was on the next year too
"There is no explanation for this environment!" was a pretty bang on opening gambit in the context
Just unbelievable every part of that performance

That day Mark E Smith and Lou Reed shared stage. Awesome
It's called the Albarn effect
With half of The Clash, nonetheless
