    The construction of the world’s first commercial space station is underway. Following completing preliminary and critical design reviews in collaboration with NASA, our partners at Thales Alenia Space began welding and machining activities for the primary structures of Axiom Station's first module. The first pieces of fabricated flight hardware are beginning to come together, and the assembled module will join us in Houston soon, where we will complete the final assembly and integration. Axiom Space is preparing for a 2026 launch of the first section of our next-generation platform that will operate in low-Earth orbit.
    -- -- --
    Axiom Space is building for beyond, guided by the vision of a thriving home in space that benefits every human, everywhere. The leading provider of human spaceflight services and developer of human-rated space infrastructure, Axiom Space operates end-to-end missions to the International Space Station today while developing its successor, Axiom Station - the world’s first commercial space station in low-Earth orbit, which will sustain human growth off the planet and bring untold benefits back home. Bigelow Aerospace was just a decade too early… Had working hardware on orbit *YEARS* before there was human launch capability to reach them. Axiom seems to have their timing just right.

      Bigelow's efforts aren't wasted though, with where the tech is owned now, there's still a future for the BEAM hardware. Here's hoping you're right, and Axiom can get this assembled and flying, in the 'if you build it, they will come' mode.

    Interesting tidbit - this place is actually in the old Fry's Electronics store that's right down the street from NASA in Houston. The whole place was decorated to look like a space station and even had a mockup of the ISS inside. If you've been before back when it was Fry's, you can even recognize the ISS still in there in a few shots. Pretty cool that it went from just being a decoration to an actual space station company!

    I love that Axiom Space is using the old Fry's Electronic store near JSC.
    For those unaware, Fry's (before they went out of business) had a custom "hook" for each store. The one in Webster/Clear lake had an area made up to look like a space station. And now one is really being designed there.

      Yes, the ISS sustains the Axiom station until it can be detached to go on its own. Axiom has a NASA contract to provide more station modules for the ISS and it will be the first of hopefully multiple commercial space stations. NASA is funding the Commercial LEO Destinations (CLD) program to provide more than just Axiom station.

    Yea, Axiom can thank Elon for changing the paradigm for spacecraft design. Nobody had the guts or the motivation to do rapid prototyping and testing before SpaceX showed everyone it was possible, and they were fat dumb and happy getting cost plus contracts to take 30 years to build a new spacrcraft or launch system. I am glad there are so many companies adopting the more sensible path pioneered by Musk, using mostly his own money.

    • @itsaburner8331
      @itsaburner8331 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think rapid prototyping and testing has its benefits, especially when compared to the old sluggish manner in which aerospace development used to be conducted, but it's certainly not a 'more the better' situation nor is it a comprehensive solution to delays, and the last thing I'd do would be fanboy over Elon Musk.

    Looks more complex than I thought, and I actually have a good imagination. Wondering when the real space stations will start: too big to launch, even with Starship. Orbital assembly was part of Werner vonBraun's vision, as was reuseability. Both ditched by NASA.
    If we ever make big homogenous designed space stations, I can still see these Meditation/Observation™ modules on all Axiom stations.

      This is no more complex than the ISS, just being built with modern hardware, and knowledge gained from building it originally. Some of the people in charge of Axiom ran the ISS, while Thales Alenia Space actually built modules for it too, and are now partnered with Axiom.

    • @Vaeldarg
      @Vaeldarg 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Keep in mind "ditched" would presume NASA wouldn't have kept the idea going if they actually had the funding for it. Blame Congress's short-sightedness, not NASA for having to make hard budget choices.

    man if they actually pull off that cupola on steroids that's going to be one of the most beautiful views any human will ever get to witness, however that's gonna be a little nerve-wracking being mostly just window, but if they use some type of projectile resistant material like bulletproof glass on earth it likely would help, but a pellet flying at orbital velocity would be devastating regardless of what it hits, thankfully not a super common occurrence and they will have planned for that i can only imagine, it's definitely going to have some type of airlock or emergency hatch incase of such issues. • @Zedrophobia
      @Zedrophobia 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Think its more with regards to the visualisation of the design. CAD is all very good but doesn't give you a sense of space, scale or convienience. Only when you actually stand in a prototype do you apprieciate what it will be like to work/live in.

    • @itsaburner8331
      @itsaburner8331 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think fast prototyping is beneficial in the early stages of a project, especially if the available resources allow it. SpaceX's approach with Starship has had moments where I've thought then lean too far into this mindset, and it ends up being sloppy and wasteful, but in other cases I think it's what has allowed the program to proceed with such haste. Bottom line treating test failures as learning opportunities can support a program which does not have a lot of groundwork or prior experience to draw from, but as it progresses you have to move away from this and be rigorous and thorough in development.
