    Great video! I recently decided to go with Lutron Caseta switches also. I really appreciate the reliability of them. They can however get pricey when doing a whole house. I just released a video showing how to mix and match Lutron smart and "dumb" switches as an affordable way to get started. I'll definitely be adding more in my house.

    Thank you for this! It was super daunting to do this on my own with no electrical background and given the shortage of electricians in my area this video was absolutely spot on! 👏 I managed to do about 30 switches in my home on my first attempt with no issues! Thank you again and looking forward to more HomeKit content!

    Removing the tabs on the switch doesn’t reduce your voltage...
    it reduces the wattage the switch is rated for

      I WAS GOING TO SAY THE SAME THING! BUT WHY?

    • @frankvee
      @frankvee ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matthew_kiely Because those tabs are part of the heat sink for the switch. Breaking the tabs off lowers the switch wattage.

    Twist those wires together before using the wire nut.
    A wire nut is not meant to be what holds the two wires together. It is only meant to keep the electricity where it wont trip a breaker or cause a fire.

    • @goaliedude32
      @goaliedude32 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2nd wire is the one from the lutron switch and they are very soft and malleable. It's acceptable to use the spring nut to hold those wires together. The house copper wiring should be pre twisted but that's just not possible with the wiring from the lutron switch.

    • @vagabondroller
      @vagabondroller ปีที่แล้ว

      You have no idea what you are talking about. Hold two wires parallel and twist a wire nut on until it locks up and starts spinning the insulated wires below. Take it apart and see what it looks like. The wires will be wound tight together. Pre twisting is just adding an unnecessary step.

    • @nvrdwn3140
      @nvrdwn3140 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vagabondroller it should be a tight twist. You would never work in a union.

    • @vagabondroller
      @vagabondroller ปีที่แล้ว

      From the “Ideal” wire nut instructions below. Pay careful attention to step 5 “pretwisting not necessary”. You are right, the union is not for me. It doesn’t pay enough to support my yachting habit.
      Straighten and align frayed strands.
      4. Hold wires together with ends even. Lead stranded wires slightly ahead of solid wires.
      5. Pre-twisting acceptable, but not required. For pre-twisting; strip wires long, hold wires together with insulation even,
      twist wire ends together, trim to recommended strip length. 6. Insert bundle into connector and twist clockwise until tight.

    The 4 black wires, it doesn't matter which one goes to which? any of the black from wall can go to any of the black in the dimmer?

  • @allanrscott1130
    @allanrscott1130 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Eric -- thanks for all these videos. You were great and quick about answering questions. Here are few more as I am about to install some switches. 1. All of our switches have three wires (copper / ground, black, and red). The three-way switches have four wires -- with additional white. Is the white neutral or traveler? Where does that fourth wire (white) go on the Lutron caseta switch? Does it matter which of the two three-way I connect the switch to and which gets the Pico remote (or closed off)? Can we close off the secondary switch by just capping the wires and closing the outlet with a face plate? Do we need the Lutron hub / bridge to use with HomeKit? Does the Pico remote work with the non-dimmer Lutron caseta smart switch (we don't need dimming on everything) or do you recommend installing dimmer switches anyhow? Sorry for so many questions but I appreciate your time and expertise. Thanks!

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad I could help. In my experience the neutral wire is white and should be pretty universal, but it might take some trial and error to ensure that in your specific home. I would highly recommend looking through casetawireless.com/3way. They have all the different scenarios for it there for pico remotes and full on Caseta 3 way switches with detailed diagrams, in a way better way than I can describe in TH-cam comments.

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dimmers can be nice on lots of places you might not think of, but keep in mind the lightbulbs need to be dimmable and compatible with Lutron Caseta (many but not all dimmable are...I address this in my videos)

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pico remotes work with regular switches too. I have one that way in my basement. You just won’t be able to use the middle buttons for anything. Given that the non dimmer switches have a traveler built in, you could use two actual Caseta switches in that case instead of a dimmer switch. Again, that link above describes all these cases.

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But yes you don’t need a pico remote on the switch you are closing off. A basic faceplate will do.

    • @SabentHD
      @SabentHD 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes always bolt bond wire down to the bond screw that's provided in the box, that is what its it's meant for. Also generally you should run bond if incase that one set screw was loose.

    The tabs your broke off are a heat sink for the dimmer. If there in the way you simply bend them towards the back of the switch, never break them off. Just food for thought.

  • @SurviveTheDay
    @SurviveTheDay 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why cap the green wire. Ground the green wire to the device box. There should be a screw in the box for this very purpose.

    • @Justin-sh4fn
      @Justin-sh4fn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya but it's unnecessary because that wire attatches to the metal bracket on the switch and the box is metal so by screwing it into the box he's essentially doing the same thing. I'd be more concerned if it was a plastic box and he capped off the wire.
