There is actually a pretty big negative with WW Mega Man 1: power ups no longer respawn on death. The final boss has weapon energy put right before so if you die in NES, you can refill your energy. The magnet beam room is also like this, so those two sections in Wily Wars are much worse
Doctor Wily's plan to go back in time and stop his defeats, involves him going back and doing exactly the same thing, but building a large tower with 3 specialized robot masters. Okay?

12:37 That actually isn't a bug! In MM3, there's an unused frame of animation for the Magnet Missile turning that was implemented in Wily Wars. Unfortunately, it makes the weapon more sluggish, which is likely why it was scrapped in the original.
Why would they entirely scrap something for "being too slow" when they can just speed it up? More likely the rushing of the NES original either left too little time to implement it at all there OR a programming snafu made it too fast to even show, and then in WW it was given too long a duration with no actual playtesting because MORE rushing-possibly because Sega-making it worthless against Doc Robot as Air Man. Similarly, the Hard Knuckle takes extra-long to fully manifest in WW, making it _almost_ useless against DR as Crash Man.
I can't say about things that were scrapped, but I do know that the Magnet Missiles for the NES version don't target projectiles that they do target in the Wily Wars version. This includes the Hard Man weapons that the RM shoots at you.
Sequel Wars mentioned! I have to agree with the way the music was done for Wily Wars on the Genesis instruments being... love or hate. I don't like them, but Sequel Wars using the Yamaha sound chip for a much better soundfont makes most if not all tracks kick into overdrive. I love the renditions of Toad Man, Bright Man, and Dive Man from 4 and the track being planned for Crystal Man is such a vibe. Hope it ends up getting a final release soon since I'd love to hear your thoughts on the improvements.

The visual/stylistic differences you mentioned with Mega Man 3 are something I have to agree with you on, though there's another specific thing regarding that, that always stuck out to me and always bothered me. Break/Proto Man, unlike Mega Man, didn't get a fully overhauled sprite, and instead stuck a lot closer to the original NES sprite. This had the side-effect of making him look tiny compared to Mega Man, which always bothered me. >.< Anywho, good review, as usual, J!

One frustrating thing about the Wily Wars version of Mega Man 3 is the way enemies instantly spawn if you go back two pixels from the spot where you destroyed him. It makes stuff like the bees in Hard Man's stage impossible to dodge.
Totally agree with you on the Top Man thing. One of my favourite things about Mega Man 3 was how the levels themselves sometimes seemed to be falling apart, especially when you go to the Doc Robot staged and they're literally the ruins of the previous stages. It sorta personifies the haphazard development cycle of the game itself.
I agree with pretty much all of this: some of the spritework looks a little goofy, the backgrounds are absolutely incredible, and it's a neat little thing to check out, even if it's not an absolute must-play. One thing I will say I like a lot is the soundtrack; I know it's blasphemy, but if you take them as separate from the original games (not that it's easy), they take on this cool sort of vibe that sounds like something you might hear in some southwest diner in whatever universe the OutRun games take place. Oddly specific, I know, but that's how I see it, and it makes great music for cruising down a country highway in the summer with the windows/top down.

The remixed tracks are a bit of a mixed bag, but the original music compositions for the Wily Towers segments are some of the most underrated Mega Man tracks. It's definitely when the music is at it's best in this game.
I used to hate the music in the genesis remake because i used to use emulators or the og megadrive with a ym2612 same goes for gunstar hereos and thunder force 4. Found out later out most games that were made after april 1993 were developed around the model 2 systems YM3438 chip with much cleaner less twangy sound with deeper bass and fuller PCM samples. Now that im aware of this i get much better results be switching between the 2 chips depending on the game but wily wars definitely sounds much better to me using the YM3438
i have a complicated relationship with Wily Wars, on one hand i appreciate the added detail and how some bugs we're fixed, I don't even mind the ost, but here's the thing, games are like a jigsaw puzzle, everything needs to fit together to work properly and have that good game feel, but when you develop a faithful remake (1:1 level design) of a game with some gameplay changes like damage values, weapon and enemy behavior, boss design and so on, suddenly everything falls apart, and that's exactly what happened here with 1 and 2, they don't feel good to play specially for veterans of the series. but then you have Megaman 3, I don't know for sure, but it feels like they made 3 first and then just rushed the other 2 (dev hell and all that bad stuff). some problems in 3 where fixed, shadow man actually works, imputs don't get eaten anymore and other little things here and there, but they respected everything else about the original! yeah, more fixes would've been welcomed, but for a faithful remake, they nailed it! it's a great way to play 3. wily tower is neat and i like it, overall this package is not that great, but everyone should play it because it is very interesting, those who doesn't have that much experience with the original might not even notice some of nasty little changes
Oh Yeah Let's Go! This game is so underrated. Wily Tower is such a cool concept that CAPCOM has to bring back in the future. The unique music in this game is also really good. Turns out that when compositions are made with the sound hardware in mind the guys on the sound team can really cook. Really wish Nintendo wasn't so greedy with third parties during that time because when companies like CAPCOM or KONAMI jumped ship they brought their A game.
I like the Wily Wars alot actually. It's one of my favorite Mega Man titles even though I had the nes games as a kid. I always like doing a WW playthrough around once a year.
I think pretty much mega man wily wars has the best version of mega man 1( at least with patches like definitive edition or others patches) for example you ever use hyper bomb (oh who I'm kidding no one do) has an upgrade glitches are fixed and even give new A.I and add weakness to wily machine 1 second phase, but it also has debuffs (of course) like slow down on original, nerfed magnet beam (I think for balance) and boomerang cutter (for.....idk why they did this). But still best version of mega man 1 ever (but really install patch at least for better buster) also cool fixes for mm3
A common misconception I see when people import the pal version of the game or an NTSC English Repro that uses the PAL rom is that it will run slower. It only does if you play on a PAL Console. The slowdown you do see in an NTSC Console on the original release happens on the JP Version as well, it was due to how buggy the game is as there was a lot of development issues. I do own a real PAL Cart which I need an adapter to play on my US Console, as well as a repro I got before getting the real thing (uses a region patched pal rom), and they run the same way. A Japanese rom is like this as well.
I do kind of wonder if Super adventure Rockman has some sort of bizzare behind the scenes stuff that would make a video on it interesting to see. Having played it from strat to finish and beating it by ALWAYS picking option 1 made me puzzled at some of the choices in it...
I got Game Gear Megaman when I was a kid. 15 years or so later, I remember my mind being blown by how much it was worth. That game blew up in price because one fool one time paid 3 grand for a CIB copy.
Yes you acknowledged mega man 11!!!! Even if its a brief mention at the beginning ill take what i can get. Your mega man videos are my favorite videos on the series in general so im excited that you may make a video about it.
The magnet missile IS less accurate... due to a funny little oversight in porting, on nes and FC it had an unused frame which was restored for the WW release... however that missing frame made it possible to turn on a dime! Hence why it seems to miss more often than not
You forgot to mention, in Megaman 2, the E-Tanks no longer lost after you get a game over, so you maybe is harder than the NES version but is balanced with no lost all you E-tanks.
I've only beaten the Mega Man 1 section of the Wily Wars so far, and honestly, I loved most of it. Besides a few hiccups other commenters have pointed out, the overall game is full of improvements. Visuals are great, music got more melodic and rhythmic depth, weapon and enemy behaviours were altered to make the game more enjoyable and fair (though still not perfect)... My biggest gripe is some of the boss alterations. Guts Man's blocks split in a much wider vertically pattern, so dodging the debris becomes plenty more difficult, Elec Man's reaction time gets a significant boost that makes him bonkers to fight (I had to use the Rolling Cutter to have a chance after many, too many attempts), and CWU-01P became an absolute joke of a fight. Damage values from bosses are also unchanged, so you'll be taking massive damage from the likes of Ice Man and Elec Man like originally. On the other hand, Cut Man is an actual threat now, Ice Man has a cool mechanic of going faster the longer the fight goes on without becoming overwhelming, Fire Man's AI was rewritten to only move when you do, while the FIre Storm attack is easier to predict and dodge, Yellow Devil is far more doable because of moving slower, taking extra buster damage and allowing you to get 2 hits per round if you're really fast, and Wily Machine's second phase is a fair fight. Bomb Man, Copy Robot and Wily Machine's first phase are mostly the same as originally, not much to point out. Having said all that, I'm really looking forward to playing Mega Man 2, 3 and the Wily Tower as I go deeper into the remake, the first game's improvements set a much higher bar than what I expected and what your video had to say on it. To anyone reading this, I highly recommend playing the Wily Wars, regardless of whether or not you like the game's outlook from an outside perspective or what your opinions on the OGs are. It's a really worthwhile experience. You may be very pleasantly surprised with how even the small details can make a difference. Also, I play it emulated, so I get no hardware slowdown. That may or may not impact the experience, I don't know, but I doubt that really takes a toll on the overall enjoyment. People love the OGs despite them having slowdown too, so yeah.
On my blind playthrough i brought the guts arm and crashbomb to all 3 wily towers stages in the hopes of secret hunting. Sadly they are both useless with no blocks or crashbomb walls placed anywhere
Nice to see a compilation game do something unique to blend together its disparate games as well as creating brand new content. Vastly better than the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy.
Small correction. The first 3 X games were actually released on other consoles as well. I believe they were Japanese only but I remember getting mega man X 1 on PC when I was a kid.
i have been waiting a while for J's Reviews to make a video about Wily Wars and he did a fantastic job, well done, can't wait to see more mega man videos from you!
Was a bummer to not have any kind of boss rush at the end of Wily Tower. Would like to just fight through the bosses without wasting time in the levels.
While Mega Man 2 an all time classic for sure (especially that sound track) I've always loved 3 ever since it came out. Yeah it's got a ton of flaws but as you said it's still extremely enjoyable despite them.
Funny enough, I'm less interested in a new main line Mega Man game and more interested in remastered classic titles. It would be so rad to see some of these robot master powers upscaled, as well as updated dialogue to give more context to the world building. They already have the blueprint with Mega Man 11
Well I’m glad J is the one who’s being positive with this remake trilogy! from what I heard the others they just being critic with this game and I swear this remake isn’t really that bad as you think and it’s worth a shot for trying it out and it’s available on SEGA Genesis mini if you’re a Genesis fan and it’s also available on online server if you’re interested.
I'm glad that you reviewed this! I prefer the NES versions, but I appreciate the Wily Wars. I bet that it was strongly inspired by the success of Super Mario All-Stars. In Wily Wars, I appreciate all lf the additional details in the backgrounds, especially MM1! What an upgrade! Also, Wily Tower was such an awesome idea. I we can see something similar to that again soon, or something like X Challenge, but with actual stages, and with the ability to choose between all of X's armors from throughout the series.
Well, the graphics are good on the Genesis remake, but I still prefer the music on the NES... For starters - in the first game, the items no longer respawn, Cut Man now takes 28 hits, much harder in the rematch due to no blocks for the Super Arm, and the biggest kicker? When you destroy the Wily Machine, it plays the "stage clear" tune rather than the "all clear" one.
Played them on Switch VC. Was not impressed. On paper, the Wily Wars versions should be better. Their enhanced graphics mean the areas the levels take place in are more well-defined than the ones on the NES. However, the gameplay is slower and overly forgiving. Mega Man 2 doesn't take your E-Tanks away when you Game Over so you can keep revisiting Metal Man or Quick Man and do them last for effortless re-supplies. Even the Wily Tower is too short and easy due to your ability to give yourself all the best powers and be under no obligation to save them since they all refill after each level, as well as the ability to easily store up to 9 E-Tanks and not lose them to a Game Over, not to mention they're easy levels even if you are going buster-only and not abusing the E-Tank Trick. 1-3 is really where you're getting your money's worth on this one, and they're slower and not as exciting as the NES versions, plus the music will never be as iconic even if some of the remixes are pretty good.
No mention of how a buster shot causes 1 bar of damage instead of 4, at least in megaman 2? It makes beating anyone buster only much harder(without etanks anyway)
When you fight Gamma on Megaman 3, go to the platform, stick to the border of the screen, equip Hard Knuckle, press UP and without releasing... start shooting at Gamma... Why no one does that is beyond my comprehension
Not much a fan of this version. It's harder, but it doesn't feel like it was supposed to be. The hitboxes being bigger was probably a compromise to improve the graphics at the cost of worsening the gameplay. The bosses also all take one pip of damage from the arm cannon, when that wasn't the case in the original. Maybe it was an oversight, even if it seems hard to miss something like that. But that does mean beating Cutman takes more than twice as long as in the original. The worst change is definitely the slower arm cannon, though. In addition to throwing off the balance of the game, and greatly slowing down the pace, it just feels worse when most of your button presses are ignored. It's surprisingly effective at sapping the fun out of the game.
5:37 wait a second. Did you crop the video? While Wily Wars doesn't have the pause glitch, the lack of left wall in the Yellow Devil fight allows you to hide *behind* the boss and avoid most if not all if its attacks. In that footage it looks that isn't the case
Outside some additions like graphics (they even add teleportation animation if you unpause game while placing in air) and additi9nal mini game, this remake is dissapointment. Game is slower, music could be better and sound used for buster hit sounds like torned paper rather than collision. What is more in question, is slowdown. We have many games where screen was filled with bullets, explosions and enemies and game workins on full speed. But here, more than 10 objects and game starting to lag. Why? Did devs try to simulate lags from NES or they just don't know how is Genesis working?
I don't think people comapling about remasters is the same thing as a company making games like Super Mario All Stars or The Wily Wars. Those games are packaghing previous games and giving them a significantly different lick of paint. Thats NOT what gamers I've ever seen have complained about when referencing remasters.
I think of WW as a novelty at best. Part of MegaMan Classic's appeal is the 8-bit sprites and music, and WW obviously couldn't go as far as Powered Up did, so what's even the point?
I somehow still prefer the originals, but I can see why WW might also need the rerelease treatment even only for historical preservation and collection hoarding.
I'm suprised you never said anything about the invincibility frames of the bosses in these versions of the games. they last way longer than any of the 3 NES games combined, which makes most of the bosses even harder and a bit more tedious to fight so called me impressed that you didn't find the SkullBot bosses worse. But yeah, every single boss is harder due to the longer invincibility freames, for better or worse.
NGL i vastly prefer wily wars as long as your not playing the crappy original version playing it on the genesis mini or the NSO the new music is pretty cool and since the compositions of the original 3 games is just great anyways i found the different sound fonts a lot of fun. with the NES games the slowdown sometimes was just absolutely disgusting at points tho. wily wars improved version greatly fixes that. the busted is also def weaker which i kinda liked to cause it forces you to use other weapons more to. IE in levels you can power through enemies by mashing them really fast and just ignore the placement of enemies by simply killing them quickly. wily wars actually forces a lot more interactions due to the slight decrease of damage you can output due to the ROF decrease. i also personally generally think the backgrounds are just a huge net positive across the board wily wars is super worth for 2/3 for 1 id still say powered up is by far the best way to experience that game.
Though I do think Wily Wars is a graphical improvement, the animations are really lacking. Either looking just as good or worse than the NES games. Mega man's walk is a good example. The extra frames makes the walk look not as good. It's having less time from the extreme poses. A lack of easing is an issue. This is hard to explain to non animators
WW was awful because it changed the game physics. Muscle memory kills you. However, the fan remake of 4 is insanely faithful and was a blast to play. I can't wait for 5 and 6.
It's ironic how sluggish WW is in every way compared to the NES MM trilogy even though the Genesis is a faster console. I suppose when you have TWO arcade-rooted companies infamously rushing you on top of adapting an 8-bit trilogy to a new instruction set that doesn't even support 8-bit instructions directly, PLUS revamping the graphics and sound and adding fresh content, you're doomed to have no time to playtest or optimize.
This video very makes me want to feel nostalgic for Johnny versus Mega Man the Wily Wars / Rockman Mega worlds. Probably because the association with Johnny versus Mega Man 3 it features clementj64, also known as the great Clement. Now, here I am, get to see J's reviews and take on Mega Man to Wily Wars. And all of a sudden, my arch nemesis some help butt in: mobile game sponsorship. Now, I have my own personal grief with these types of sponsorships, especially the ones that went mainstream or oversold in a TH-cam spot for a TH-cam video. I don't usually follow trends, especially with thea playerbase that big. Because one I don't want to spend more time and money in some game and two I don't have interest in some game and three I'm not going to waste money on gambling or any of the predatory double standards. And four finally, even though it was available on my Android or steam, I'm not going to install it and give it a few minutes of playtime. People have different interests like I was. And War Thunder, just like World of Tanks and Fortnite, I'm not fancy a couple minutes of playtime.
There is actually a pretty big negative with WW Mega Man 1: power ups no longer respawn on death. The final boss has weapon energy put right before so if you die in NES, you can refill your energy. The magnet beam room is also like this, so those two sections in Wily Wars are much worse
As someone that played both versions. I can agreed, the WW ver is a bit harder in that regard.
My question is, is this also true in Rockman Mega World? That is, the Japanese version of WW.
@@alynnzz0491I think it does, but I should replay it to be sure.

Hence why it seems to miss more often than not
2:15 here we go again
You forgot to mention, in Megaman 2, the E-Tanks no longer lost after you get a game over, so you maybe is harder than the NES version but is balanced with no lost all you E-tanks.
I mostly prefer Mega Man 1 and 3 in the Wily Wars, but I wouldn't be lying if I said it's a close race as to which I like more.
War Thunder Fourms: Now has the blueprints to SWN: 00 Bass and Zero.

HE CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT
I've only beaten the Mega Man 1 section of the Wily Wars so far, and honestly, I loved most of it.
Sadly they are both useless with no blocks or crashbomb walls placed anywhere
the Wily tower actually sounds pretty cool and a better idea than the clusterfuck crossover fights in MMX legacy lol
"The Mega Man X series was only on Super Nintendo"
X3 PS1's superior OST: Excuse you.
Glad to see more MegaMan content back from you. Great analysis of The Wily Wars.
Nice to see a compilation game do something unique to blend together its disparate games as well as creating brand new content. Vastly better than the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy.
2:01 Sega was really ahead of the curb with their tech.
Boy i cannot wait for you to see protoman in this collection.
I would like to register as 'excited' for the RMW reviews. I have much nostalgia for those 5 carts...
Small correction. The first 3 X games were actually released on other consoles as well. I believe they were Japanese only but I remember getting mega man X 1 on PC when I was a kid.
in addition to the sluggish shots, it also felt like mm's jump had been altered as well...
i have been waiting a while for J's Reviews to make a video about Wily Wars and he did a fantastic job, well done, can't wait to see more mega man videos from you!
2:22 They even added in his tear ducts. Do robots cry?? I know Reploids do.
I bought the SEGA Genesis Mini in 2019 mainly for this game and I don’t regret it!
I LOVE WHEN J POST MEGA MAN CONTENT!! THE X RETROSPECTIVE IS HOW I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL! 😭
Dr Light's sprite in MM1 of WIly Wars looks like each eye is looking at something different.
0:32 "remaster"... Yeah, right.
I HATE HOW PEOPLE MIX UP REMASTERS AND REMAKES
@@grimacethemeance7973 I'm also speaking on how Wily Wars is just overall hands down *_inferior_* to the NES versions of these games.
Original is superior to Wily Wars, which is a shame but its true
More megaman stuff is exactly what I needed right now >:]
12:36 The magnets try to magnet their way to the flying fists of Hard Man. This was not a bug.
Wily wars was ok but some may like it
Played them on Switch VC.
It makes beating anyone buster only much harder(without etanks anyway)
yay more megaman content!
"Mega Man X was seen as a Super Nintendo series" But X 1 was also on PC, 3 was on PS1 and after 3 it was primarily PS1...
When you fight Gamma on Megaman 3, go to the platform, stick to the border of the screen, equip Hard Knuckle, press UP and without releasing... start shooting at Gamma...
Why no one does that is beyond my comprehension
12:09
That's the _sky??_ I always thought the walls were just blue.
Can you make an Astro Bot review, I’d like to hear your opinion on that game.
Love your classic mega man reviews
5:37 wait a second. Did you crop the video? While Wily Wars doesn't have the pause glitch, the lack of left wall in the Yellow Devil fight allows you to hide *behind* the boss and avoid most if not all if its attacks. In that footage it looks that isn't the case
This video was brought to you by The Military Secret Distribution Service. More blueprints to come soon.
Four and five? where can I find five tell me now (I’m talking about the sequel wars if anyone was confused)
Once you're with the classic series do you have plans to do Battle Network & Star Force?
Outside some additions like graphics (they even add teleportation animation if you unpause game while placing in air) and additi9nal mini game, this remake is dissapointment. Game is slower, music could be better and sound used for buster hit sounds like torned paper rather than collision.
What is more in question, is slowdown. We have many games where screen was filled with bullets, explosions and enemies and game workins on full speed. But here, more than 10 objects and game starting to lag. Why? Did devs try to simulate lags from NES or they just don't know how is Genesis working?
Awesome video :]
Real gamers patch that boy up with the woodfrog weapon master hack (you can use all weapons in all 3 games, like for example mm3 weapons in mm2)
I thought you Would mention the 8 bit fan made wily tower
3:32 name of the track?
Elec mans stage
Elecman's theme from Wily Wars
I'm suprised you never said anything about the invincibility frames of the bosses in these versions of the games. they last way longer than any of the 3 NES games combined, which makes most of the bosses even harder and a bit more tedious to fight so called me impressed that you didn't find the SkullBot bosses worse. But yeah, every single boss is harder due to the longer invincibility freames, for better or worse.
Very nice cover ^^
J any plans to review the PS1 remakes known as Rockman The Complete Works?
2:18 it looks fine they just need to remove the cheeks
NGL i vastly prefer wily wars as long as your not playing the crappy original version
playing it on the genesis mini or the NSO the new music is pretty cool and since the compositions of the original 3 games is just great anyways i found the different sound fonts a lot of fun.
with the NES games the slowdown sometimes was just absolutely disgusting at points tho. wily wars improved version greatly fixes that.
the busted is also def weaker which i kinda liked to cause it forces you to use other weapons more to.
14:54 Once again, don't count out fan projects.
If I'm not mistaken, in mega man 1 you can use the bosses own weapons as their weakness in the willy castle
You are mistaken.
@sidnew2739 well, there was one that had that. Can't remember which one it was. Maybe 3 since that was my first mega mam.
@dragonjerod No MM game that I know.
@@sidnew2739 i do remember at least one that had that. I've played them all but it's been so long lol
@dragonjerod No, there wasn't.
