I'm 74 and Italian. Grew up in the tenements of NYC in the 50's and early 60's. I remember this song and others of the era on hot summer nights. No ac. A small window fan. The smell of garbage wafting up from the street. Listening to this and other songs of the times. I remember block parties where Hector Lavoe and others jammed. Italians, blacks, Irish, Polish, Puerto Ricans etc all had a great time. We mostly all got along. Yes, there were gangs and fights but the most of the hard working people and the families got along. You know why? We were all poor. It's always been more about the color green of the dollar then skin color. IMHO it's worse today. Keep rockin and God bless.

It's all gentrified now and looks great. A real shithole when I was a kid. The ball fields look like Yankee stadium now. When I was a kid they were just dirt. We used too clean them up in the summer so we could play ball. Old tires, broken glass, junkie needles all over. Junkies would watch us play until they nodded off. LOL.
It was the same for me when I was young. No divisions among different ethnicities. We all got along and music brought us all closer together. What the hell happened to this world?? Politicians divide us to try to control us.

Reminds me of my sister teaching me to dance what was back then "Latin Music" which years later became Salsa. It the was Joe Cuba Band and Cal Tjader that got me to love Vibes. Then lo and behold Bang Bang came out. I was 14. Damm you could not go anywhere without hearing El Pito or more so Bang Bang. I got into "salsa" with Comin At You but came of age with Bang Bang. And then came My Man Speedy LP. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You to your father and godfather. I purchased a Yamaha vibes and every day I bang away to El Raton and Bang Band and Quisiera Yo Tener. My first bass teacher was a man named Carlos Castillo who played with all the big names in Latin music back in the day, Joe Cuba and Machito included. What a fantastic person he was and i'll never forget how much he meant in my development. This music will always have a special place in my heart as it speaks directly to my soul.
My dad used to play the congas and teach me to yell out bang bang and beep beep... I was 1 1/2 wow!!! great memories. Still one of the most exciting songs yet.

I’m a 64 year old Puerto Rican who grew up in Spanish Harlem. Yes, life in the Barrio wasn’t easy, but I was so blessed to have good parents and at the time a solid family. The Joe Cuba Sextet, was probably the best group of the 60's. Why? The combination of Nick Jimenez's arrangements, Jimmy sabater's Lyrics and singing, Cheos's singing and presence molded the group into a powerhouse. Joe Cuba was a shrewd bandleader. Vibes player Tommy Berrios was preety good, and Slim Cordero's Bass was Booming. Long live Joe Cuba

Survivor2002: I must be in your mother's age bracket. This song came out in 1966, I was14 years old. We were doing a dance called the PHILLY DOG. I grew up in WATTS in the NICKERSON GARDENS PROJECT, and ain't ashamed to admit it. Those were the days of, I really can't explain it here it would take much too long; and this is long enough. But this song came out at a time during immense social unrest, and brought a sort of ease to our community. But my grandchildren & a couple of my children look at me like you mentioned. This was one of my favorites also. Along with PATA PATA by Miriam Makeba; which is also on YT, I just finished listening to it as well as "GRAZING IN THE GRASS" by HUGH MASEKALA, I hope I spelled that right. Wow!!! I remember hearing this when I was about 2 or 3 and singing along. I think that this song probably started my love affair with Latin music. God I love this!!!! Somewhere there is an old reel to reel with me and my little brother singing this. I'm so glad my mother listened to all kinds of music, and passed that love along to me and my brother. my father moved upstairs in my two family flat at age 79 after splitting up from my Mom. His father was from Poland, a real Polish farmer, and my Dad spoke Polish fluently. While he was living upstairs he would listen to Spanish radio stations and blast this song when it came on. He lived with me about a year and half before moving into a nursing home. Survivor2002: I must be in your mother's age bracket. This song came out in 1966, I was14 years old. We were doing a dance called the PHILLY DOG. I grew up in WATTS in the NICKERSON GARDENS PROJECT, and ain't ashamed to admit it. Those were the days of, I really can't explain it here it would take much too long; and this is long enough. But this song came out at a time during immense social unrest, and brought a sort of ease to our community. But my grandchildren & a couple of my children look at me like you mentioned. This was one of my favorites also. Along with PATA PATA by Miriam Makeba; which is also on YT, I just finished listening to it as well as "GRAZING IN THE GRASS" by HUGH MASEKALA, I hope I spelled that right. These ALL came out that same year. All I can say now is: GROOVY, MAN, GROOVY!!! AND READ AND MEDITATE ON YOUR BIBLE AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN. JOHN 17:3.

Wow!!! I remember hearing this when I was about 2 or 3 and singing along. I think that this song probably started my love affair with Latin music. God I love this!!!! Somewhere there is an old reel to reel with me and my little brother singing this. I'm so glad my mother listened to all kinds of music, and passed that love along to me and my brother. Today 6/11/23, they danced to this Mega Hit at the Puertorican Day Parade. We played it on our bus on our Senior trip to Rocking Horse Ranch in 1965. Eastern District High School, Williamsburg (Before it was hip.) Brooklyn. WEPA!

my father moved upstairs in my two family flat at age 79 after splitting up from my Mom. His father was from Poland, a real Polish farmer, and my Dad spoke Polish fluently. While he was living upstairs he would listen to Spanish radio stations and blast this song when it came on. He lived with me about a year and half before moving into a nursing home. I have to laugh every time I hear this. My dad the Pollack cranking up the Cuban music! WTH?

This song came out when I was a teenager. I first heard it at my friends house where they were all dancing to it. I had never heard any Latin/Hispanic music. So to have Black people loving this was great.
