I remember my favorite part of this book by far is "The Inn at the Edge of the World", the story of the innkeeper and the travelers. It was a reminder of the very reason why I love Erin Morgenstern's stories and why I love reading in general. It was so beautifully written, so magical in its simplicity yet bewilderingly complex at the same time that I was completely transported. I felt everything in that chapter, the warm fire, the biting snowstorm, the comfort of a simple inn tucked away in the mountains. God it was unlike anything I'd ever read before.
How lucky are we to exist in a world where Erin Morgenstern blesses us with her writing?

Everything you said was my exact experience with this book. I’ve never felt such magic emanate from a story. It felt so personal to me. And much like you I went around telling everyone to read it and a lot of them ended up reacting so,,, normally to it like “Yeah, it was good, kinda confusing.” But I haven’t seen anyone else feel as strongly toward it until now. And it made me so happy to see. You reminded me why I love it so much and to not let others opinions take away from what it means to me.

I haven't read The Starless Sea, but as you were talking about your feelings and interpretations of it, I kept thinking of Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow. I really think you'd love that book, it is also magical and all about people being interconnected and parallel universes kind of. It's hard to describe, but the feeling it evokes sounds a lot like what TSS did for you! ❤️

This might sound random but I strongly recommend Italo Calvino’s books! He’s my favourite author and as I was reading Starless Sea all I can think about is how much this reminds me of some of Calvino’s short stories. Invisible Cities and The Baron in the Trees are two of my favourite.

Hannah, seeing you go through the same emotions I did when I first read this (and every re-read after) was making me want to re-read it again. You put everything into words that I haven't yet - it is nostalgic and beautiful and I love that you loved it. When you hugged the book to your chest at the end, I had a visceral memory of doing the same thing when I finished it. Somehow, this book made me feel like I was both home and on an adventure, and then opening it back up felt like a homecoming. I've made a decision to read it once a year at the end of the year just to relive the beauty of it. I'm so happy you've read it and loved it

The Starless Sea feels so much like a book written for each individual reader. I loved it so much after reading it back at the end of May that it became an all-time favorite (my favorite non-classic standalone, easily). I am so glad that you loved it so much. 💜

I’m currently reading The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and the way I’m feeling while reading it is how I felt while reading The Starless Sea. I don’t think it’ll be the same for you, but I just want everyone to read it.

I just finished the book, and i am so in love, sosososo in love, with the writing, the story, the stories within the stories, fate, time, doors, love, I am going to reread it to explore it more. I love how you mention that it is so interpretive in your point in time. And I immediately think of what Erin wrote about the ballroom and the man asking 'when' in time the protagonist came from. It just feels so ugh, right. It is currently my favourite book of all time too. I also believe that it came to me only now at the perfect time by fate. And I also believe with all my heart that everyone who loves this book are kindred spirits, all destined for the starless sea :)

I’m reading the Starless Sea right now. It’s the first Erin Morgenstern book I’ve read and all I can say is.. wow. Your reaction to the book is so on point with how I’m feeling about it right now. I don’t know if I’ve ever been so lost in a story like this. It’s giving me the same magical feeling that I felt for books as a kid. Like reading Harry Potter for the first time and feeling like Hogwarts is real and maybe you can visit it some day.. ugh I’m just in love with this. I had a years long reading slump during the pandemic and this has re-ignited my love of reading like nothing else ever could. So glad you liked it too!

I spotted A Winter's Promise in your TBR stack which I read last year and absolutely adored!! It has something of The Starless Sea about it, in that it is far more character focussed than plot focussed but still incredibly immersive with fantastic worldbuilding. It's also really whimsical and mysterious with hints about some important past event bleeding through the surface level adventure. I'm sorry I'm being super vague but I think you'll love it❤️

I just kept laughing every time you came back with an update, because I identified with all of your reactions SO strongly. I got to read The Starless Sea back in the autumn of 2019, because I had kind of...lucked sideways into getting an ARC at SDCC that summer. Basically, after the autograph line for a comic series I was trying to get into was capped before I could get there, I randomly remembered that there was an ARC giveaway/signing for TSS that they were giving away tickets for at the same time, and so a friend and I RAN over to the Penguin booth just in time to get some of the last tickets they had. Looking back, it felt so *meant to be* to me.
When I finally got around to reading it a couple of months later, my experience mirrored yours in so many ways-the feeling of "wtf?" combined with "must...know...more!" you have when you start the story; the never ever ever wanting the story to end; the sobbing because when you do get to the the ending, it's so beautiful/poignant/perfect in every way.
You're right that is book won't resonate with everyone, and I truly think it's because Erin Morgenstern wrote this book for readers that possess two distinct traits: 1) we never stopped looking for our magical door to other worlds, even after we should have been "too old" to believe in such things, and 2) stories have saved our lives, not just once, but over and over again.

I had a really similar experience - it really felt like it was meant for me - I felt so at home in the dreamscape/wordscape. As you mentioned, I think there are plenty people out there who will not care for this book, and plenty more who come in expecting something more like The Night Circus, but for those of us for who it clicks, it REALLY clicks and it feels like coming home. i actually jumped up from my chair from excitement when i saw this video in my feed omg.
the timing is literally perfect because the starless sea is probably my absolute fave book of all time, meanwhile i still never read the night circus, and now i'm finally reading the night circus and Loving it, so i've been thinking about u a lot the past few days.
i relate so much to what you say about the way erin morgenstern writes stories. i feel so immersed in her books, they feel like such a comfort. she truly is my fave author, i am forever in awe.
also the "i don't want this to end" SUCH A MOOD. i took like a month to read the starless sea, purely because i would take it slow on purpose so i could live inside the book longer. and i'm now feeling the same with the night circus.
honestly the way you talk about erin morgenstern books makes me so happy, because i feel exactly the same and it's the best feeling, and it's so wonderful that there are more people out there that experience these same amazing feelings. i've hugged the starless sea so much, it truly means so much to me and it's wonderful to see it having similar effect on you. this video genuinely made me teary-eyed because I FEEL U.
also i once saw someone describe the starless sea as a door of its own. the starless sea was Our door, and i really like that way of looking at this book.

So I just got the book like a month ago and I've been SO excited to read it but exams had me busy for a while. I finally started reading it a couple days ago and I'm enjoying it. It's not my usual type of book, I prefer just having one character that I can really root for, but in this book there are several sides.
Honestly, it's a little hard to get through for me because of all the switching but it is still a beautiful book. I absolutely love her descriptive writing, the way she creates wonderful images for us. However I do think this book might not be appreciated by everyone. It takes a lot of patience to see it through to the end. Overall, I would rate it a 7/10 and would definitely recommend to readers' who've got patience.

This vlog reminded me of how much I absolutely loved this book and as you were going through it I was remembering what I felt during those scenes and I literally got goose bumps. It was such a magical book and you're right, it felt deeply personal as I was reading it. It really is a story about what it feels like to be in awe of stories and the ways the impact us. Literally such an amazing book!!!! Erin Morgenstern is a master and no one else could have written this book but her

I think I had the exact same experience. I got this book on preorder and it had it sitting on my shelves for almost two years before I finally decided to pick it up a few months ago, and oh boy. It's just perfect, there's nothing I would change about it, even the stuff that I don't completely understand, it physically pains me that the starless sea is not a place I can visit.
I don't know what kind of magic she did to nail it, but I totally understand what you mean when you say that it felt like it was written specifically for you 💖

Yes to all of this!!! Also; Shadow of the WInd and the Starless Sea are two of my all time faves. Something about stories about stories just hits different. Reading through Cornelia Funke's Inkheart series as a kid was the first time i think i noticed how much i enjoy this type of novel!!!!

I just finished it, and I'm blown away by it. At the beginning it was pretty hard for me to adapt to the style of it, but slowly I fell in love with how things started to come together. And now it is a favourite and I wish I could read it again for the first time.

The way you're explaining this book reminds me so much of Vita Nostra, which is my favorite book and I have been craving and seeking another book that can give me the vibes and the journey of discovering that new world the character was thrown into, and I think you just sold this book to me 😂😂😂 I know it's not the same, but if I can get even a 2% of the vibes and love I felt for Vita Nostra, I'm taking it!!!!

i watched this video ten minutes after finishing the book, and seeing someone reacting to something i had just read was so much fun and i felt understood. also, about gatekeeping, does anyone else recommend a book they love waiting for them to read it and when they finally do you just die inside because someone who knows you just read a book that is your whole heart and soul and have positive and negative thoughts and opinions and you feel as if something was stolen from you? like i love hearing strangers on the internet gush about their feelings but my friends and family? they know too much about me to read my favorite books

I actually did the same thing you did with The Starless Sea, but with The Night Circus. I bought it in passing at a target back in 2018 or 19 and it sat on my shelf for years until I saw a coworker reading it last December. I mentioned I had it but it’s been on my shelf for a while and just never had the urge to read it. She told me she read TSS first and adored it and was really enjoying TNC and convinced me. So I read it this past January and was absolutely enchanted. It made me fall in love with reading again. Since reading it I’ve read 8 other books already this year and finished The Starless Sea last night. It’s a hard toss up to tell which I like more but all I do know is Erin Morgenstern has officially risen to my favorite author by far and I cannot wait for her to release a third novel. This time I will be buying and reading as soon as it is available. Will never make the mistake of sleeping on her wonderful mind ever again

I read this book in march last year, right when the pandemic started, and it was literally the perfect book to escape reality for a moment. Her descriptions of places and people are just so beautifully detailed, I could literally see it all so clearly in front of me like I was actually there? Also I'm 22 but if I ever saw a painted door on a wall somewhere I would not hesitate and immediately try to open it hahaha
    Love your videos!! ❤️

I am so so so happy you loved this book! I read it back in January 2020 and it was my favorite book of the year and I now consider it one of my favorite books of all time. I was really scared you would be disappointed by it as I haven't read The Night Circus yet so I couldn't compare the two. Great video, lots of love from Germany

Hannah! You said something that just clicked for me. I read this book last year and it is my first Erin Morgenstern book and I absolutely loved it but couldn't really verbalize why. But it is exactly what you said. It feels familiar, like home. Even though it's not something you knew before, it feels like it. Exactly!

I loved The Starless Sea so much. I also think it's pure magic and I don't know how she did it. I loved every sentence of it. And I felt like I could taste every word. It was amazing. In terms of wonderful writing and a whole new magical world I think you would like A Winter's Promise by Christelle Dabos. It's a book like no other. Sometimes I think that everything has already been written but no. The world Christelle Dabos has created, the characters in it, the story itself... She's a genius. It was the first time in my adult life since reading Harry Potter as a child that I felt fully immersed in a book, I could imagine the whole world and oh my, what a world it is. I really recommend it if you want to get lost in a book. And it's actually first book of four so the adventure can last longer.
