People who don't see the benefits and advantages of the bus lane are short-sighted and selfish. They only think of themselves on how fast they want to reach their destination. Nobody wants traffic but the fact of the matter is there is a high volume of vehicles plying edsa.
How about you ride the buses for a change instead of complaining the effectiveness of the bus lane. GA is right. The old bus lane system is chaotic. The bus drivers back then have no discipline. But now, the private vehicles are the ones who have no discipline. Funny how we point fingers blaming others of their faults but when the opportunity arises, they are also the ones who have no discipline as well.
If you are not part of the solution then you are a part of the problem.

I bet you don't have driving experience. If you have seen how a lot of buses and red plates goes out and in of the bus lane and not apprehended, you would realize why still a lot dares the rule. Because if you're going to think of it, the cars are not basically not static so the question is so why us the flow so slow and mostly still. That's for the traffic engineers ( in case you are not aware they exist) to figure out, not those corporals who basically do not know what is traffic management.

You could already see the Downs-Thompson affect working. Traffic is so much smoother.
The reason is that people will want to take the fastest option.
If the buses get stuck with cars then I would rather be comfortable in a car. Which means I’ll add to traffic by driving my car.
However, if the bus is faster than my car, then I’ll take the bus. By taking the bus, I am not adding to congestion so the rest of the cars will go faster.
Eventually the 2 modes will have an equilibrium where taking the car or taking the bus is relatively equal. In this case, way faster than before.

Next big thing that needs to be addressed is the LTO handing out licence to basically everyone.
When I was taking my LTO Drivers exam theres a poster on the wall with all the answers and signages labeled right in front of the room.
Which I didn't need because I went to driving school but the exam is a joke. How many drivers are out there that are completely ignorant of proper road use and etiquette.
You can clearly see how ignorant some drivers are especially the tricycle drivers that jumps in and out regardless of circumstance as long as the tricycle can fit in that space they will take that space and often time causes accidents because they're just blatantly ignoring rules and rights of way.

Those that are commenting that the bus way is stupid is way stupid than what they think of themselves. In the first place, there was no need to increase the penalty if those damn motorists just know how to follow the damn rules of the road. Sisihin niyo mga pasaway, don’t blame the rules because the need for discipline outweighs the sad plight of those who suffer because of irresponsible motorists and this is one way of reducing those pasaway motorists. Lastly, sa mga pasaway at kamote, stop thinking that your license to drive is a right, it’s a mere privilege so just shut up and be disciplined.

As someone who has lived for 6 years in Singapore, and is currently a PR, no thats not exactly true. Even in Singapore where etiquette in terms of queueing up is upheld by every citizen, you got the pinoys cutting them still (most typically foreigners). Its either the elevator or the MRT queue, and is kinda the reason for how we are stereotyped there.
Of course those few years growing up there were my formative years, so safe to say I didnt like my own race quite a bit, tried to dissociate even. Lived here in the Ph after secondary school, where I try to be an abiding citizen, and I see too many people are just using their "diskarte" (which IMO is just synonymous now to katarantaduhan) and being really fucking weird. Of course its ingrained in our culture, enforced by the "hayaan mo na" saying, but that's just saying we're really fucking irresponsible if thats how most of us think.
Day before yesterday even, I encountered one of these "diskarte motoristas"; Angkas driver specifically na may sakay. We were stopped at a red light on the intersection at Roxas-Osmena near Taft and crossing to Makati (SAV). If you are a frequent driver there you know there are grannies and kids selling when nakahinto siya, and they go to the side when its green, and di naman sila nakakaabala during that green light. Usually I'd stay on the leftmost lane kasi dederetso ako, and motorcycles dont fit sa left side ng car, so di sila talaga makasingit. The driver had a smart plan: Unahan ako pag nag green, and the caveat is that he has to cross the pedestrian lane rin. Ayun sakto naggreen, I let go of brake and accelerated slowly, siyang nasalikod ko na motor humarurot when may space na to the left kung nasaan ung pedestrian lane, may tumatawid na matanda, nahagip nya. Pinagisipan pa nya btw if hihintuan nya, halata kasi tumawid na siya ng riles, which is 20 m AWAY FROM THE LOLA. Haharangan ko sana pero nauna siya saakin, naisipan rin naman niya balikan (naghazard siya at bumaba kasama ung sakay, idk kung ano nangyari sa sakay nya HAHA), pero ayun, diskarteng pinoy strikes again.
I dont like to generalize, I know theres a lot of good law abiding Filipinos, pero unfortunately the bad seeds tend to really outshine them. Environment and inherent culture lang talaga, walang nagtuturo ng tamang asal sa mga tarantado nowadays, kadalasan dadalin sa pagiging pilosopo para majustify yung kanilang kagagawan.

The bus lane is a good idea. But improving the MRT and lowering the charges is also a very good idea. Do you know that our MRT or LRT is just averaging at 45kmph compared to other countries which is way faster. You guys can google it. The buses ply the same route as the MRT. So actually the buses are in a way redundant especially at off-peak hours. In other countries, you won't see them apply this solution. Their buses take different routes (usually goes around) which has more stops.

There will never be a solution for traffic in Metro Manila because everyday several new vehicles comes in and their numbers kept on rising. Even if you build new sky ways or roads they are only a temporary solution. Ortigas Flyover was once promoted to help solve problem of traffic in EDSA during it's construction but now even on top of it there's traffic. At the very least other than MRT, the bus way is one of the most effective way to help more people travel EDSA.

  • @aevorozco

Penalties for traffic violations should be steeper. The 5,000 penalty for using the bus lane is not good enough to deter these violators which is why there are still those who keep using the bus lane. It should be double the amount and if caught again, the vehicle should be impounded and stay in the impound lot for 30 days plus suspension of the driver's license for 30 days as well. The law and penalties should be very tough.

    Statistics work. Period.
It’s how you interpret the data.
    Example:
During World War 1, the number of head injuries increased drastically when the soldiers were issued with helmets.
Some generals who don’t understand statistics blamed helmets for the increased number of soldiers with head injuries, and wanted to recall all the helmets.
Thankfully these generals didn’t have their way.
Head injuries increased, yes, but the number of deaths due to head wounds drastically decreased.

They need to encourage people to go to other places for jobs and education. There is simply just too many people in Metro Manila and the public transportation just could not handle the load. Our major commercial centers are just too closed to each other. Same with major universities particularly the University belt. Here in Florida at least, the major universities are situated many, many miles miles from each each other. You have UF in Gainsville, UCF in Orlando, USF in Tampa and UM in Miami with a scattering of minor colleges, junior colleges, etc. In Manila you have FEU in Morayta, a few steps away is UE, then Arellano Univ in Legarda, DLSU, San Beda, SSC, CEU, and UST at Espana
ALL WITHIN a1 sq mile area. Can you imagine all the humanity adding to an alreAdy crowded rush hour traffic? It was already that bad 30 years ago, its even worse now. Tere a lot of great universities outside of Metro Manila.

Well the point is you don't have to pay if you follow the rules. If you don't want the government to make money off of you then do what you're supposed to do and be disciplined. It's not a stupid law. You can be on the bus lane if you decide to take a bus. This way you can help alleviate the congestion on the road, and maybe get to where you're going on time.
