*Yeah brilliant Rich. Ripper show. I could sit and listen to the old days for hours. As an old bookies clerk that started working at the races at the age of 13, there was certainly a lot of personalities and endless stories and laughs, that I heard growing up. Thanks heaps for this show. Great memories.*
Hey glenn ....Mark...been living in cambodia ...10 years now ...little contact with anyone from aus.....browsing old racing rant shows a couple of months ago ......well dressed Frank......hit me like a ton of bricks that he's gone .....I didn't know ...love your show .....like you guys have great memories of the track...Darcy .
Watched this for the second time today. Great chat. I sat with Mark Read's mother one time back in the 70's. She said to me "You shouldn't punt Clive". Why not I asked? Mabel looked at me and said "Your on the wrong side of the fence Clive". I still punt but I've never forgotten those words.
The thing that attracted me to these blokes was their view on life. I gave it a crack in 95 and went to the track on a Wednesday and Saturday. I'd see Glenn and as Marc says - he was the rockstar of the track. I didn't last coz I didn't have the ticker of these fellas. I've done the Ikea thing. It's fucking torture. I too, saw the star quality in GP so I approached Dallas and we made a pilot (that included Miss Bondi!!) of the punters show. I only mention this coz of the response I got from an executive at ESPN that I pitched the show to. He told me that he couldn't possibly air it "because of the unshaven gent (marc) wasn't fit for TV". Which is a perfect example of how the prisms of which people like Glenn view life differ from wankers like that TV exec. I take my hat off to Kings for starting the Den and of course the guests of this show because they want to show us idiots living in suburbia that there is another way. Lastly - just to tell a little story of the mathematical genius of guys like Glenn. I asked him for his quaddie tips one Saturday and that I wanted to have 10 units the win. He then went on to calculate in his head how many horses in each leg x the div that would give me the amount I needed to have on to get to 10 units. Took him 10 seconds.
That was awesome, great episode. So good to hear it is NOT for entertainment and keep improving for the sake of making a profit. Glen you should write a book on what to look for when horses parade. Legends thanks.
I worked with Peter Todd great man started when I was about 17 we had a bagman called Tony peacock, Marc turned up I said who’s he. Tony said he is Marc the boy genius from indoor cricket 😅still makes me laugh
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! "Losing makes you feel stupid," Marc just articulated precisely how one thinks and feels after applying seemingly intelligent rationale to betting, only to be smashed into oblivion by the punting Gods. Lo the old betting days, the track was where it was at.
I was betting through the 80s,90s and still bet now. I had some huge days back then. I used to get some unbelievable mail. Having said that I knew nothing of the science of punting. Regardless of the huge wins, when there was plenty in my favour, I sure did torch some cash over those "formative" 25 years. Oh the memories. Thanks again fellas.
I loved betting in the 80's and 90's too. SP was pretty much 106% each race, thats SP. Last week the Straddie on TAB was 120%. I find I feel like you can't win anymore. I'm not smart enough anymore to beat those percentages or the 10% on Betfair. I'm pulling up stumps and moving on. I hope they don't kill off the industry, but I think they are.

More punters less breeders
This needs to be a regular podcast, monthly would be perfect!
What a awesome episode. The time flew by.
What a line up of legends!!

That was a very enjoyable watch, keep up the good work
Best pod you’ve done
Loved the bit about Dallas's $800 dollar microphone that Mark and Glenn rented for $280 a week for 4 years 😅
I worked with Peter Todd great man started when I was about 17 we had a bagman called Tony peacock, Marc turned up I said who’s he. Tony said he is Marc the boy genius from indoor cricket 😅still makes me laugh
What a great podcast, gotta get hem blokes on again, plesase.
thanks mate
I guess some people don't understand how racing gets into your bloodstream. Found myself watching the Autumn racing and really enjoying it again.
The big boys of Sydney punting. Colourful racing identities 😂
best podcast so far, great stuff guys
I bought a lounge last weekend Derby Day I can relate
Wentworth Park, as a bookie the Silver Fox was always up early with the odds.... "betting on the first" was his catch cry
'ken loved this. Thanks boys.

I realized the game was up when Dom left in 1987 I think. It will never be the same. Much of the Australian culture has gone with it.
There wasn’t the emphasis on Track Bias then like the MEDIA harp on about all the time now.
I stand to be corrected

By the way - I hope Dallas sees this re how Glenn talks fondly of him.
great story mate, thanks
