    I've been super lucky recently in Hawaii. I've gotten rare reverse operations on several occasions after not getting it for years. On this flight we get reverse ops on both the takeoff in Kahului and the landing in Honolulu. For those wondering what reverse operations is... Airports have what are called "flows." And the flow, or traffic pattern, at an airport is determined by the wind. Aircraft always takeoff and land into the wind. This is done for safety reasons. Say an aircraft needs to be going 100 knots on approach. And let's say the wind is blowing directly down the runway at 20 knots. Because the aircraft if moving though the air and isn't touching the ground, when landing into the wind, the aircraft only needs to be moving over the ground at 80 knots. Because the wind is already moving over the wings of the aircraft at 20 knots. So you takeoff and land into the wind because you can achieve the lift needed while moving over the ground at a slower speed. Flip this example and land with the wind at your back, and you now need to be moving over the ground at 120 knots to achieve the same results. So it's safer to operate aircraft into a headwind as it allows them to fly at a slower ground speed. Now, at most airports around the world, the wind can change wildly throughout the year, or even throughout a single 24 hour period. This will cause the "flow" of the airport to switch directions as the winds swing from one direction to another. However, there are some airports, that because of their geographic location, have the same exact winds all year. Every day, every week, every month, the winds are constant from one direction. Honolulu and Kahului are two of those airports. Because of their positions and the Pacific Ocean trade winds, it is very rare for them to have winds blowing from the southwest. Every once in a while though, something called the Kona winds happens. The Kona winds is an unusual weather pattern that overtakes the Hawaiian islands and actually overpowers the typical Pacific trade winds. This causes the airports in Hawaii to abandon their typical flow. Leading them to "reverse operations." Which, as we just discussed above, causes aircraft to takeoff and land the opposite directions that they normally would. In this case West/Southwest instead of the typical East/Northeast. And on this day, we got that rare weather pattern and we get to see a rare Southwesterly takeoff from Maui and a rare Westerly landing in Honolulu. Enjoy!

      Wow thank you so much for this info! At first i thought why would they want to land heading into the wind! Now it makes sense and also now I know why landings can have the roller coaster effect :)

    Seeing an airliner with fuselage-mounted engines has become pretty rare. I don’t think any US carriers fly the MD-80 (Mad Dog) anymore. Most passengers don’t appreciate the loud engine noise, but I’d pay extra for it. 😂
    As always, great video! 👍

      @sla31  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      You are correct. Both American and Delta have retired all of their MD-80's and MD-90's. Of course, Delta still flies the 717 too, but the story is definitely closer to the end than the beginning for the 717. Enjoy them while you still can because they won't be here forever. Thanks for watching my friend!

    Fellow 717-200 fanboy here. I work at an airport and have been talking with Delta pilots who arrive or depart with 712s. I am here to say that the Mad Pup is here to stay until at least 2030. And I say at least because Delta keeps pushing the retirement date on them because pilots love them so much. I don't know what Hawaiins plan is with them, but you definitely have plenty of time to fly on the last mad dog before they retire

      So happy to read this as someone who grew up on the mad dog. I’ve only recently started private training, and was pretty gutted because I thought there wouldn’t be a chance for me to fly them when I might reach delta. So glad to hear this!

    How ironic I was downloading and editing my camera shots of Delta’s B717-200’s up in the North Star State during my 3 hour layover and yet here’s a another video of a trip report onboard Hawaiian’s B717-200 from Skylight Productions and you know I’m a big sucker for Angry Puppies from any airline as they’re my number one favorite aircraft type. Who would have thought this would happen 🤣🤣.

    I just finished watching The Cassandra Crossing (1976) and now, I'm watching your latest Hawaiian adventure.
    In this movie, some Swedish terrorists strike a US medical facility in Switzerland where they were developing biological weapons. During the fight between the security guards and the terrorists, one of the super-pathogens gets unleashed and the terrorist who escapes is infected with it.
    He boards a northbound train running up thru Central Europe with an all star cast like Ava Gardner, Sophia Loren, Ann Turkel, Richard Harris, Lee Strasburg, Martin Sheen, and OJ Simpson. And Burt Lancaster was the US colonel who 1) was determined to lock the train down, prevent anyone from boarding or leaving and 2) to prevent the world from learning that the US was developing bioweapons in a neutral country. And he was willing to let everyone be killed by letting the train go over an old, very unstable bridge called The Cassandra Crossing. This was his two-for-one solution to this crisis.
    So... the Big Question: who will live and who will die in this thriller film? You can see this movie for free on YT, on Daily Motion, and on Tubi TV.
    Anyhow, love that engine sound on the 717. No jet lag for you on this flight! Keep winning those Olympic Gold Medals.
