MGB GT - From C to Skye - Day 2

- The second day of my trip in the MGB GT to the Isle of Skye! In this video I drive from Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands over mountains and past lochs to the Isle of Skye itself where I do a bit of exploring! I hope you enjoy this video and there's more to come on day three which I'll share soon!

I remember watching a programme on BBC about this place in Skye a few years ago now - I think it was about a chap named Norman Collie, who apparently was one of Ian Fleming's influences for James Bond.. or maybe I made that up. Anyway, I've meant to drive up there for years since. Maybe you've given me a kick up the backside..! Nice video!

Beautiful car. Love the wheels. My mother had a GT on order in 1969. Gray with red leather. Sadly it sat on the dock in NJ for many months due to a dock strike. She eventually gave up and bought a Camaro... Ouch. In fairness her 1962 Sprite had suffered badly from the salt here in Connecticut and the floors had rusted to the point that the possibility of falling into the street was increasing by the day. I was 15 at the time and had my eye on the Sprite, but the rockers were also gone and the work required would have well exceeded my limited skills. Still... I have been compensating for that loss by buying Miata's. A total of 5 so far, with 3 still here in the garage. Never got an MGB and at 70 my car buying days are winding down. I love the fact that you are exercising the car thoroughly. Enjoy!
Great story! I love the Grampian grey (I expect) and red leather colour combination but yes rust is a problem as you saw on the midget so maybe a lucky escape with the Camaro! Miatas are a fantastic substitute for classic British sports cars, they have the same design purpose but with less drawbacks e.g more reliable, better performance and (hopefully) less rust (although I hear they can suffer from that on early ones)! Thanks very much 🙌 you’ll have a blast in a TF! Personally I don’t think the roads are suited to anything too big/powerful as you can’t make the most of them but smaller sports cars are just right!
Your roads make me appreciate our roads in Arkansas. Also an encouragement to get off of the main roads and explore some of the lesser traveled paths. Looking forward to the next one.

just finished (literal minutes ago) my first drive of the year in my 80s GT (bringing it out of hibernation), all went well so i expect to be making it my daily again sooner rather than later. the last video in this series really got me in the mood to start driving it now the worst of the winter is past; fond memories of last summer, driving it through snowdonia omw to Pwllheli.

Just came across your channel yesterday and enjoying living vicariously this weekend in my mind through your classic car travels 🙂 Hopefully you can do Applecross as the scenery would be amazing. Glad the MG is behaving...classic cars can be harder to live with but IMO theres no greater feeling than touring in an older car...

Absolutely superb video once again. Cinematic, relaxed and nicely aligned to the pure roadtrip ethos. Bonnet cam angles, mood music with steak & wine at the end. :-) Just how roadtrips should be. (Extra marks for taking the interesting 'long way home' to the hotel.......particularly in an old MG, in the rain - in the Scottish Highlands! Mind you, our Chipstead lanes can be a bit like that in this weather as you know! Love the Bond film spots earlier. Inspired me to get up there. I don't have my XK8 any more, but I am looking for another XJ for this sort of thing. Some of the roads look great for motorcycle touring too, but with the changeable weather, it has to be a car! Love the channel. Refreshingly hits the spot without the all too common (these days) loud intros, pointless dumbed down catchphrases and over the top advertising! :-) I can see some of the positive influences on the style, but the authenticity really comes across too. 👍

Meant to say miles per gallon! I have a 1973 Mgb roadster with twin SUs and seem to only average 25 mpg.. perhaps 30 mpg on motorway. Great vids, wonderful quality.

I have a 1970 roadster and see the same mileage(I have overdrive.) I did wonder if fitting the V8 or auto diff might help or 15” MGC wheels?
Has anyone tried this, does it blunt the performance too much, not that there is much compared to a modern car!
I have the diff from my Dolomite Sprint, which is 3.45:1 & that’s also a Salisbury axle, not sure if it will fit but I have a spare axle I might pull the half shafts, if I get time. Currently the MGB is in the middle of a second not so extensive rebuild after 100,000 miles since I last rebuilt it.
Yeah exactly, I replied to the other comment, 25mpg is about what I got with the Weber too
I subscribe to a lot of popular car channels on YT, but out of all of them I was looking forward to this isle of skye drive the most.

Utterly glorious Mark, thank you so much for sharing. Kudos to you for tackling the drive in winter but what a reward you've had - memories lasting a lifetime! On the trip, have you found that people admire your car? I'm always amazed at the range of ages who say complimentary things about our GT whenever we park up. Again, thanks so much for taking the time to do this.
Many thanks! Yes a very rewarding trip and I’m glad I can share it with other enthusiasts! Yes the GT got a lot of admiration and waves, that’s the great thing about them I find, they aren’t flash or expensive so people warm to them more 👍 Plus as they were popular cars quite often people have their own MG stories of previous cars or relatives who had them!
Makes me want to get my 67 B GT out and about! Only had it a few weeks after buying it back. The last time I saw it was when I sold it in 1988. It has been well looked after.

When I still had my MGB GT I took it up to Scotland, it was one of th ebest drives I've ever had. Rust claimed my MG though, I sold it to a guy who will do it up for himself though so it will probably be on the road again one day. I go up there in my Jag now though instead, rust is claiming that as well slowly.
It is great up there, definitely going to go back and do more! Sadly that’s the problem with steel bodied cars if you use them, for me I’d rather get out in all weathers than lock it up so I pay the rust-tax 🤣
@@granblogismo Yea it's just amazing how quick these MG's rust though same with my Jaguar. I just wish it was easier to find a body shop that was reliable and good.

As you know, I love Scotland and especially the Highlands, being a very regular visitor myself. The Sligachan Hotel is a gem, sitting as it does at the foot of the Red Screes. It's a couple of years since my last visit so, tell me, does it still display the board stating, 'Soup of the Day - Whisky'?

Nice video, good to see MG out and about, I toured the IOS some years ago on a motorbike (also Isle of Mull on another trip, also worth a visit) loved the A87 with it's fast sweeping bends, especially on the bike. When I went luckily the weather was a tad better, but think it quite bleak in bad weather, but worth a visit.
How are you getting on with your motorbike? not used it over the Winter?
Yes I kept thinking about biking whilst I was up there, certainly in better weather it would be fantastic! I’ve not been on the bike much recently but itching to get out on it when roads are dry, it’s partially dismantled at the moment to fix an indicator and clutch lever but I’m finding working on a bike an absolute joy! Hi! Thanks for watching the video! The drone is an older DJI Mavic Air, it’s sophisticated enough to track objects and fly autonomously (still need to keep it in view from a safety point of view) but small enough to want to take it with you on trips, the equivalent today would be the DJI Mini drone as the Air models have got a bit bigger and expensive, hope that helps?
Great video, and fantastic to see the MG back, I've loved all of your BGT stuff. This is one hell of a road trip and one I'd love to do. Have you stumbled across my new channel yet @exhausted I'm in the process of installing a super charger on my '74 GT although it's taken a pause for a while over winter (I've been kept busy on a TF) but I'll be back on it soon.

Thanks! I use an older DJI drone called the Mavic Air, so the first of the ‘Air’ drones they did, probably similar to the ‘mini’s they do these days as I think the latest Air is a bit bigger/heavier than mine 🤔
Awesome. Enjoying this series of videos - still continues to inspire!. Can I ask - how do you make the map animation with the little car cartoon graphic? As seen at 5:35ish and 13:35ish? Also, the music you use seems very decent, but whenever I explore TH-cam Studio Audio library, most of the music seems pants! Nothing like what Instagram and TikTok offer by default which often include current or high chart value tracks.
Thanks for watching! The map thingy is a phone app called ‘Travel Boast’ and is pretty cool/easy to use (once you get used to it) for this sort of thing, worth paying the fee to get all the features 👍 music wise it took me ages on TH-cam audio library to find acceptable stuff 🙈 artists I use the most are: Patrick Patrikos, Dan Henig, Corbyn Kites and DJ Williams, hope that helps? 🙌

Absolutely! The main trouble I have is that I had music playing in the car so I can’t use the sounds for fear of copyright issues for a lot of it 🙈 The few bits I had in this video I could have used without background music though so I’ll see if I can do more of that for day 3 👍👍
How do you do the drone shots of your own car driving up a windy road - most impressive
Hi! It’s a feature of the drone to follow an object automatically, not sure you’re really supposed to use it like that but I only tend to use that feature when roads are empty 👍

Just curious...why do you use a garmin instead of a regular phone?
Good question! I cover a bit of that in part 4 (not live yet) a few reasons: the maps are preloaded so no need to have phone signal in the more remote places, good trip info plus live elevation/speed, don’t run down phone battery or have to keep taking it in and out cradle when stopping to take pictures 🤣 the main reason though is that this one is a motorbike sat nav so is quite rugged and water resistant plus can use it with gloves (for when I eventually go on longer bike adventures)!
Any idea of mpg? Do you have the standard size tank? Any places to fill up up there?
Hi! Yep it’s about 25mpg, at 50 or 60 mph it’s more like 30 but ‘normal’ driving and motorway speeds it’s 25ish 👍
Any idea of the fuel consumption?
Yeah kind of 🙈 I recorded all the fuel stops with the intention of working it out …. for the first couple of days then forgot! It’s about 25 mpg, more at 60mph but less at 70ish 😅
