    Ride the Rails in Real-time: • CTA's Ride the Rails: ...
    Ride the Rails in Time-lapse: • CTA's Ride the Rails: ...
    The CTA has more than 224 miles of railroad tracks across Chicago and surrounding suburbs, serving the agency's eight rail lines. In an average weekday, there are about 2,200 train trips making stops at the system's 145 rail stations. For more than 100 years, the 'L' has offered a unique perspective of Chicago.
    In the first-ever documentation of its kind, the CTA has created a real-time ride along the length of each rail line. Shot in HD, you can now experience the 'L' like never before from the vantage point of the rail operator. You can even transfer between lines.
    Hop aboard, and enjoy the ride.

      it's never been anything else they just gotta record new announcements I was born in 1990 and nobody I know or ever knew ever refers to the Skokie Swift as the Yellow Line

    Until 2004 the line was partially third rail and partially catenary and the switch from one to the other was made at speed.

      deckerjr growing up in Evanston in the late 1990s and early 2000s I remember the catenary in Skokie lol.....it would be the first "light rail" line I'd ever come across though technically not such

      @sammorex2543 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I remember riding this when it still ran off the catenary. This was probably about 2003. After full conversion to the third rail, the last remaining use of these old catenary structures were for remaining ComEd powerlines that were finally removed by 2019 and perhaps rerouted. Any remaining catenary structures for this now are just relics.

    The Yellow line is all that is left of an old Interurban line called the "Chicago, North Shore, and Milwaukee". It was cut back to Skokie in 1963 and was split at Howard which I think was a stupid thing to do. At least what's left of the old interurban line is a bike path. But the trail only starts at Golf. Part of it does parallel the track to Dempster Street.

      @xkee2013 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. Had they kept the track and the CTA acquired it, the yellow line could have ran all the way to Mundelein.

      Had Illinois and Wisconsin been able to get together on a financing plan, the entire North Shore Line could have been saved. The South Shore Line was saved by government action.

    Skokie Swift (Howard to Skokie) until Oakton-Skokie was opened. Then the Skokie station was renamed Dempster-Skokie.

      You may have something here! Platform lengthening would need to happen in Skokie but that is a great idea. The only thing is, now that it's set in stone the Red Line will be extended to Far Southside this make the Red Line long as it is.

    How does the CTA justify the cost of operating the Skokie? So few passengers. Defies common sense though I support the transit system.

    • @atomstarfireproductions8695
      @atomstarfireproductions8695 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Due to low ridership, they often operate trains with only 2 cars, which is the minimum possible.

      Was there long before CTA existed, the CTA was formed from independent lines throughout. Many no longer in operation and some shorter than past. Only few stops on Skokie Swift. Is populated area even if appears in middle of nowhere

      CTA just took over old tracks that were part of the North Shore Line so it probably didn't require a large capital investment to begin service.
