In the occupied West Bank city of Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, city and church leaders canceled all Christmas festivities this year to mourn the more than 20,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza. We feature the Christmas sermon, "Christ in the Rubble: A Liturgy of Lament," delivered Saturday by Reverend Munther Isaac at the landmark Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bethlehem, which has received international attention for a nativity scene depicting the figure of baby Jesus in a keffiyeh, surrounded by rubble. "If Jesus were to be born today, he would be born under the rubble in Gaza," preached Isaac, who condemned using theology to justify Israel's killing of innocent civilians. "If we, as Christians, are not outraged by the genocide, by the weaponization of the Bible to justify it, there is something wrong with our Christian witness, and we are compromising the credibility of our gospel message."

      Al-Maaida:82
You will surely find that the severest of people in enmity towards the believers (to be) the Jews and those who associate partners (with Allāh in worship). And you will surely find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say: “We are Christians.” That is because among them are priests (given to learning) and monks (given to worship) and because they are not arrogant.
Imām al-Saʿdī (d. 1376H) said: These two [Jews and Pagans, Polytheists] are the greatest of people, absolutely, in their enmity towards Islām and the Muslims. They are most frequent in striving to bring harm to them. This is because of their severe hatred for them, out of transgression, jealousy, opposition and disbelief. [Regarding the Christians being nearest in affection], the Exalted mentioned numerous reasons for that: From them, among them are priests and monks, meaning, abstemious scholars and worshippers, who are engaged in worship in monasteries. And knowledge comes with abstention [from the world] and likewise, worship is from that which makes the heart gentle and softens it, and removes what it may have of harshness and coarseness. For that reason, you do not find among them, the harshness of the Jews and severity of the polytheists. And among [the reasons] is that they are not arrogant, meaning, they do not have arrogance and nor insolence towards accepting and complying with truth. And this necessitates their nearness to the Muslims and having affection towards them, for the humble one is closer to goodness than the arrogant one.
Imām al-Ṭabarī (d.310H) said: Allāh, lofty be His remembrance, has informed about a faction among the Christians whom He praised [Negus and his companions] with respect to their nearness in affection to the people of faith in Allāh and His Messenger. That this occurs from them because they are people of striving in worship and asceticism in monasteries and that among them are scholars, learned in their books and those who rehearse [these books]. Thus, they are not far from the Believers due to their humility towards the truth when they come to know it, they do not show arrogance from accepting it when it is clear to them, because they are people of religion and striving therein, and in being honest [with themselves and each other] in pursuing Allāh’s [pleasure]. They are not like the Jews, those ones who were accustomed to killing the Prophets and Messengers, showing insolent opposition to Allāh in His command and prohibition, and altering His revelation which He sent down in His Books.
Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (d. 1421H) said: The address in this verse is either to the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم), and thus the speech about the Jews, Christians and Polytheists in this verse is regarding those in the era of whom? The Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم). Or the address is to everyone… thus these descriptions are general for those [groups] until the Day of Judgement. So the verse can carry [these meanings]. Alongside that, even if we spoke with [the view that the verse is] general, then it is not generalised to every Jew specifically, or every Christian secifically, or every polytheist specifically. Rather, this ruling is from the route of generalistion.
The Jews are those who claim they are followers of Moses and they say: “We are the chosen people of Allāh”, they belittle other nations, and they are known for arrogance, seeking highness and haughtiness, until even against their Messenger, Moses (عليه السلام)… they are a faction among Banī Isrāʾīl who claim they follow who? Moses. And those who associate partners [with Allāh], [they are] from the Arabs and other than them.
These two groups from the the Sons of Ādam, they are the most severe of people in enmity towards the Believers. As for the Jews, the reason for their enmity is that they envied the Arabs because the general [universal], lasting Messengership was among them. Before that the Jews used to anticipate victory over the people of disbelief [the Pagan Arabs] and would say: “A Prophet will be sent, we will follow hm and will be aided against you.” But when Muḥammad (صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) was sent from among the Arabs, they became jealous and rejected that.
As for the Polytheists, then they became the severest of people in enmity because they are opposed to Tawḥīd, whereas the Believers are [pure] Monotheists [in belief, word and deed]. So the polytheist hates the monotheist, dislikes him and sees him as as the greatest enemy to him.
And when they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of what they have recognized of the truth. They say, "Our Lord, we have believed, so register us among the witnesses. Al-Maaida:83

It is a shame and a disgrace that when people need the the churches for comfort and solace they close. This happened during covid and during this blatant Genocide. At least this pastor had the forethought of doing a sermon but this is not good enough from the Christian faiths as they are not supporting their people as they have in the past. I think it is about protecting the church buildings rather mourning with the people. Mourning would involve keeping the churches open, for prayer and services in this time of desperate need and conducting services and prayer vigils.

That’s a good idea, but in the USA Christianity is intentionally manipulated on this very specific issue.
In the late 40’s many mainline Christian denominations supported Israel. Many of these churches were far less literalist, did not believe in biblical inerrancy, and were influenced by the social gospel philosophy, the support of Israel was motivated as an aspect of interfaith movements and trying to overcome religious chauvinism.
Meanwhile many southern churches, fundamentalist churches, evangelicals still believed in supersessionism, the idea that Christianity replaced Judaism and Judaism was an illegitimate religion or worse.
Then in the 1960’s the mainline churches began to withdraw support of Israel because of the knowledge of these abuses, and certain Jewish leaders like Martin Buber who turned away from Zionism because he called it just another nationalist chauvinism.
Then “miraculously” fundamentalist churches were manipulated to believe in end time prophecies and Christian Zionism and therfore support Israel. This is no accident. And this pastor actually calls this out, here, clearly that many US churches have a state sanctioned theology for US military interests.
Unfortunately I am not sure if these other churches will see through the lie.
But in short Christian Zionists and nationalists were given more legitimacy in the USA while mainline pastors who criticize imperialist abuses were marginalized.

If Pope Francis had any real decency, he would not only be giving sermons like this priest, he would be excommunicating Joe Biden for not having the least regard for the ten commandments despite attending church regularly.
There is the phrase of "Gang nach Canossa" in the German language (I do not know if it also exists in other languages.) dating back to the 11th century. Then king Heinrich IV had a dispute with Pope Gregor VII over religious and worldly power. The displeased Pope excommunicated the king thereby essentially declaring him an outlaw, which forced the latter not only to step back from his positions, but cross the Alps and wait for three days outside the city of Canossa, before the Pope even allowed him in (and eventually back into church).
That is the kind of decisiveness with which the Pope should speak up (and other confessions as well, but mind the initial example was the Roman-Catholic Joe Biden) if it does not want to once more end up in history books for being on the wrong side and only paying lipservice to Christian moral standards.
