"Papillon" is Jackson's solo debut single from 2017, which was about 3 years after he debuted as a member of GOT7. At this time he was primarily known as a rapper, so his first few songs are more hip-hop style songs, as he worked to make his way into the western/U.S. music market. And he did several collaborations with well known western hip-hop artists.
As you may know, Papillon means butterfly in French. However, Jackson got his inspiration for his song "Papillon" from the hollywood movie Papillon, which is based on the life of a French man who has been wrongly convicted of a crime and sentenced to live in prison. The man is nicknamed Papillon because he has a large butterfly tattoo on his chest. While in prison the man has to fight to overcome a lot of bad things and endure a lot of hardships in order to escape. Jackson said he kind of saw Papillon as a warrior who was ready to do battle to gain his freedom and he admired his strength and ability to never give up. With that in mind, he took that story and adapted it to create a more modern version for his song "Papillon."
Therefore, in the song and MV Jackson is talking about feeling trapped and he wants to break free from the self doubts and all the things that are holding him back from accomplishing his goals and becoming his true self, etc. A butterfly could also be a symbol for new beginnings as it turns from a caterpillar to a beautiful insect with wings that allow it to soar. Because this was his first solo debut, I think "Papillon" was a metaphor for how this was a new beginning for him as a solo artist and producer. It's a new chapter in his life where he is now able to focus on his music and the things he wants to do with his career, instead of only being known as the funny entertainer who does what other people want. This was a rebirth and new start for him as he shows off his hard work, introduces us to Team Wang and begins to build his brand and solo career, etc.
It was around this time that Jackson made a deal with JYP Entertainment that 6 months out of the year he would promote and work as a member of GOT7, and then the other 6 months -- while the other members were focusing on solo activities or promoting GOT7's Japanese songs -- he would be working on his solo music and participating in solo activities in China.
I hope you all know Papillon is diss song to his ex-company as well and all those idol rules. Though he doesn't talk openly about it because he is very humble to create drama, but this songs refelected his feelings too.
The line 'All they care about profir not me' is reference
Thanks for another great Jackson wang reaction. It’s a reference to a French movie, he really went through a journey of discovering of his musicality. But the song is 5 years old and still slaps. This song also has a remix which I’ll admit I like better for dancing. He has Easter eggs hidden in the MV that are linked to his other song Okay. His Magic Man album is coming soon hope you will react to that too!

Jackson has come a long way. I would say that’s not the current Jackson Wang anymore, at that moment he was just trying his best to do music, nobody wanted to work with him. He had to paid for everything. He was working non stop to make music and make his label, fainted multiple times, end up at the hospital. He kept going and going.
