Chris Bigman I have been having panic attacks for over 20 years... I can’t drive on the interstate.. wide open spaces bring them on. I can’t sit in a restaurant unless they sit me in a corner with nobody behind me. I totally understand how you feel. I know it’s frustrating when people don’t understand. My family thinks I’m stupid.. they say just don’t think about.. it makes me so angry.

Once you eliminate the fear and stop reacting to the panic attack with anything but calm and teaching your brain you are alright....anxiety loses it's power against you. The fear is what gives anxiety it's power....like "IT" the clown :) Love your podcast and been listening for a while but first comment.

Haha how awesome, I've just wrote a comment like this because it's very similar to what happens in IT. The more we fear the fear, the more powerful the anxiety and panic grows. This is why reassuring people that panic and anxiety sensations and thoughts are not dangerous. Allowing the panic and anxiety to be without fighting it or wishing it were gone is also KEY. Thanks for your comment :)

Hey Bro! So I finally STOPPED googling 'chest pain', 'breathlessness', 'dizziness' ETC and started googling how to tackle my anxiety. I'm an anxiety veteran, it's been my right hand man for as long as I can remember. I suffered crippling health anxiety for about 5 years from the age of 13, almost always focused on the same thing - neurological disease...classic, hey? I replaced that with social anxiety, paranoia etc. So whilst I wasn't panicking about why my fingers were tingling, I turned into this overthinker that read into every detail or catastrophised everything I experienced, 'this plane is gonna crash', 'I'm gonna lose my job', 'my fiancé is gonna leave me'. I coped 'okay' with that for a while - at least I didn't have an undiagnosed neurological disease! It peaked and troughed but all in all, I got about my life. Guess what reared its ugly head 2 months ago - the hold hypochondriac in me. The last 3 months had been pretty shit, everything got a little too much - I had my first panic attack in YEARS. Half an hour later I'm in the back of an ambulance with a 12 lead ECG. They told me I was fine and I believed them. I went home to bed, and my symptoms persisted. Not the full pelt of panic, but the twinges, the breathlessness, the dizziness. Coming and going day after day. Sometimes I felt nothing, I was totally symptomless - but subconsciously that hamster wheel kept on spinning and spinning. The symptoms would appear and the panic would ensue. Am I dying or am I losing my mind? After 3 trips to A&E (ER to you), I went to my GP. I got a prescription for anti-depressants and somePropanolol for the palpitations. I left with some reassurance. I'm not ill, I'm just anxious! You know the drill, after a few days, was back to square one. Back to the GP. Hey, guess what? I got another anti-depressant but this time I got a CBT referral (but the NHS can take FOREVER). I never took the anti-depressants, the side effects sounded terrifying enough! My mum recommended me St. John's Wort - and I can say they've taken the edge off it. I start CBT tomorrow, in the mean time I've been having some privately paid psychotherapy. It's kinda helping - but talking about my childhood/parenting doesn't change much. Anyway - the point of this message? I guess it's good to chat to someone whose been through it, and ACTUALLY understands this horrendous, indescribable, bullshit that we face. But more so to know that you, it would seem, made it out the other side. I'd been having that cotton wool brain, foggy, (I think they call it derealization) for most of today. Stupidly I downed a cappuccino thinking it would take me out of it. Bad idea. I had a full on meltdown, palps, nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, 'SHIT THIS IS IT IM GONNA DIE'. Instead of symptom checking on google, I typed 'CBT for health anxiety' on to TH-cam and you came up first. Two hours in and I've not called an ambulance. I'm making progress I guess. Tomorrow I've got a GP appt. I'm still not convinced this is entirely anxiety - what's new? I suppose it's a step back. But for tonight at least I'm staying put at home, working thru your videos. It's genuinely so good to know you came out of it. I am so hopeful I'll be there one day too.

Same boat as you. Tried recently to lower my dosage of sertraline, bad idea, if anxiety is a mini boss in an mmorpg game, this anxiety was a world boss. Got back on my dosage and doing good but still having panic. Im convinced i will have this for the rest of my life. I love these videos though; i would love a video from Dennis for when we are actually having an attack.

Hope it’s been a good year for you! I’ve been a lifer with this. Currently it’s “omg I’m a 34 year old spinster who will die scared broke and alone, it’s too late,I’m a leftover failure with no more chances” it’s been very loud and the idea of doing ANYTHING productive for myself wakes the beast. I’ve had years with this and years without. I just need to remember that even if I have one good day for the rest of my life ahead of me, that’s one more than if I give up. I feel safer hearing your stories and knowing I’m not permanently broken, or alone in this.

Stop fighting against the attacks and let them be, helped me a lot. Had a few thousands serious attacks for 7 years, nearly 2 years ago now, and no serious attack as the extremely strong “thoughts” are less strong and wont last long. When i have strong thoughts now i dont feel the “energy” running through my body anymore, which was “setting the alarm” to have a attack for the event which i choosed (unconsious) myself. So you might not be consious of getting them, “like they come out of nowhere”, but you set the alarm yourself each time already. Once you feel those energy’s and accept it you will experience less strong attacks as time passes. Still feel some anxiety but luckily nomore attacks. They are truly Horrible! Hope you all be cured from this disaster soon! Dont fight them as you will loose!!

I usually have panic attacks while driving. I commute 1 hour in hwy 70 to I-30 to work, and 1 hour back. Panic is hard to manage when you're behind the wheel, which is dangerous, which instills even more fear, then lightheadedness, then atrial fibrillation, then I feel like I'm having a stroke and heart attack, I'm dying, and eventually my muscles lock up and I pull over and pass out. I have only been hospitalized once for a severe episode where I temporarily lost mobility due to an extreme oxygen content in my blood, causing intense shivering and sweating for 2 hours. They did a 6 second EKG and found nothing wrong with my heart. I showed symptoms of a focal aware seizure, but it was all psychosomatically induced by a snowball effect of fear.
My advice if you cannot control anxiety: stay away from caffeine and sodas.

I wasn’t able to get on an elevator for 6 years because I was scared of being trapped in one. One day I said screw this, I went to the local hospital building that’s 6 stories tall and I got on an elevator and went up and down over and over hoping It would get stuck, it didn’t. That day I made reservations for Vegas with my wife and kids at Cesars Palace way up high in the hotel, it’s something I’ve been wanting to do with my family but my fear kept me from doing it, we had the best time ever! I’m also afraid of dying and there’s no avoiding it, so I’m not wasting anymore time worrying about something I can’t control. I’m gonna live everyday making myself and my family happy! Face your fears people and live life. God bless all

I felt hopeless until one day I got tired of it to where I felt a panic attack coming, and I used these steps you talked about, almost immediately I felt better and day after day these ugly feelings and thoughts got weaker and weaker and eventually faded away. I no longer feel fatigue, lightheaded, dizzy, have blurry vision, and headaches are gone! It was too good to be true I started crying tears of joy. I am so fucking happy that I discovered your channel! I have suffered from Generalized Anxiety all my life, I am 52 now. I am a singer/songwriter, musician, visual artist and writer. During my 30's-40's, I began suffering from severe panic attacks and insomnia. I was self-medicating with speed, alcohol and eventually heroin! I was diagnosed with EDNOS, PTSD and OCD along with Bi-Polar disorder and Panic Disorder and was prescribed Effexor XR for about 12 years. I have been clean from my passed discrepancies for about 8 years now. After 12 years of Effexor XR, I literally was so dumbed down that I stopped writing music and I really couldn't ,make my Arte'. So 4 years ago, I stopped my meds cold turkey and took my mind back! It was absolutely ARDUOUS but I began writing what will now be my eighth album! During this same junction I entered menopause and suddenly I re-entered the cycle of panic attacks ,yet again! Scary heart-palpatations cause me to be afraid even during my daily workouts now! It is debiltatiing! I am in the midst of writing my double album...unfortunately, I am experiencing Nocturnal Anxiety Attacks and daily Panic...I DO NOT WANT TO BE ON DAILY MEDS AS THEY CAUSE ME TO NOT BE ABLE TO FUCTION AS AN ARTIST...I hope that you can give me some guidance! ^..^

So im going to try and not eat in a restaurant for a while to see how i am. Ugh, i hate this so much!!!!! I miss my life before I started having these panic attacks. I broke down earlier because im so sick of it and miss the old me. I hope my life can go back to better than normal again 😢

My panic attacks come in the middle of the night. I'll wake up shaking uncontrollably and unable to speak. It generally subsides in 5 to 10 min.
My instinct is to pace around the house because of the amount of energy I have while this is happening. I can not sit still.
I takes me hours to get over it, which generally means no sleep, which in turn affects my job the next day.
    It's a crazy cycle.

    3. confort solution : calling a friend or whatever
    4. running away, avoid
    INSTEAD DO THIS
    1. NOT taking deep breath, only slow breathing 2sec inhaling 2 sec exhaling
    2. grounding : 3 things you can see, 3 things you can hear, 3 things you can feel

The thing that makes my condition worsen when the attacks happen, is that i literally start feeling faint, weak , turn pale skin and i hardly ever can feel my heart beat on my chest to begin with, but its more of a heart stopped feeling. Tends to make my body numb as well. Getting up and walking does help and i like to use the bathroom as a coping mechanism where I can throw a splash of water on my face, and breathe focusing on the faucet. Im new to these severe attacks as of a couple months. Ive had anxiety for years but was more of a pacing around shaking. Much worse now.

Hi! I’ve been having anxiety and panic attack from last few months suddenly in the morning, while sleeping, I get up at any odd hour 2,3,4 at night, that time nothing helps. It all started when I started studying astrology for myself and my kids in which I read was bad future for all of us and reading that from now on I will be going through anxiety and panic throughout my life . Not been able to come out of those thoughts can’t forget what I read. Ok throughout the day after morning but those hours when I suddenly get up any time of the night, my body fully healed up with all the scary, negative thoughts about my kids and family ,pounding my head .i loose my control and worry how to stop myself from hurting myself . I feel helpless. I do some of the things you tell but will try more . Thanks

hey there. Does anyone have a difficult time working out? As soon as i get to breathing hard and am in between sets or running around the basketball court, i begin to get this feeling of tightness in my throat. Once that sets in, i begin obsessing over what i feel like is labored breathing, and the feelings and thoughts of death or not being able to breathe take over. Just a little background, i was taken to the ER from the gym about 9 years ago during my first "official" panic attack.

    • @hopscotchgiggles4288
      @hopscotchgiggles4288 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

biggquis I know exactly what you mean. I had the same experience. I hated the physical symptoms when I worked out.
But I had gained weight and was very tired. It wasn't pretty to me. And I hated how I looked and felt.
Finally, I just decided enough. I began exercising for 5 minutes every other day. Nothing strenuous, just simple exercises. Then gradually I worked my way up and today I now exercise for an hour and a half. I do it every day now.
Exercising mimicks panick attack symptoms. Nothing is wrong, you just have to realize and day I'm safe in this space... I'm exercising and my body is just accommodating my exercise regimen so i can have the best workout.

I too was rushed to the ER after going to a run. After already (recently) suffering. Panic attack, the symkptomz of t he heart rate going up, sweating, and breathing hard... reminded me about panic symptoms so it freaked me out. Essentially I caused it myself. But boy, working out after that incident was very difficult.

This video was extremely helpful and made my panic attack go away while listening. It really is a mind thing. I've been suffering from mild ones since September, but they grew severe during Thanksgiving week and I ended up at the ER and taking propanolol which only made my heart rate slow yet adding more uncomfortable side effects. I spent days worrying about what to eat and think, which only kept triggering more anxiety. I even feared nighttime because my mind would automatically pray and hope for decent sleep, which again only triggered panic symptoms. This video helped me to fully calm down and I truly appreciate it. Thank you so much.

I am struggling with panic driven high blood pressure. At home I am in normal range but as soon as I have to have my BP taken it goes off the chart. I would want to add “but REBREATHE “
Rebreathe into paper bag or even mask 😷.
Rebreathing prevents carbon di oxide wash out caused by hyperventilating and helps ride the wave. Don’t overdo it but use this only till you feel the worse has passed. You can breathe fresh air afterwards.

Then I had the worst panic attack going in waves over 4 days with little breaks. I had developed Hashimoto (My medicine was too strong and I had lost lots of weight). Today - I am fine! I found you need to get out of your head - I like to be really cold and focus on the feeling of cold on my skin and I use a fan to blow on me as well. And yes RIDE the wave! Just see a doctor if your weight changes and you take medicine as they can have that side effect.

Everyone's different and reacts different and needs different coping mechanisms. Deep breathing helped me take my mind off the actual panic attack and to help me slow my heart rate down which was the main reason why I couldn't pull myself out of the panic attack because my heart was racing so hard and fast which made me panic even more so the actual deep breathing would help me pull myself out of the panic attack and slow my heart rate down so don't say to people don't do deep breathing! Because it definitely helped me!

    • @TheAnxietyGuy1
      @TheAnxietyGuy1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

This world will never change During a panic attack, an individual hyperventilates. Hyperventilation happens when an individual’s breathing rate increases rapidly and deeply. In turn, a person actually breathes out more air than they breathe in. This lowers the amount of carbon dioxide in the body, in turn causing blood vessels to get smaller. Small blood vessels cause the common hyperventilation side effects of dizziness, tingling in the hands and feet, even a loss of consciousness (source). In short, deep breathing mimics hyperventilation by causing an individual to breathe out more than they breathe in. Breathing is an incredibly powerful tool. Oxygen is part of our life force, so maintaining a healthy equilibrium in the breathing process is important. For some, deep breathing exercises are a great way to approach breath training. Do be advised that for others, deep breathing is not effective. As with all therapy modalities, find what works and stick with it. ❤️

I have had anxiety disorders on and off since 2013 when my friend passed. But, it usually goes into hiding after about 2 months, for a while. On and off all the time. I guess it's because I am not dealing with the route cause. But, anyway, I had a massive panic attack about 7 weeks ago. The ambulance was called to my home and of course, it was because I swore I was having a heart attack. The paramedic said no, he's actually very healthy (I'm a weightlifter) and he has a very good heart. So, I began to calm down. After a week I was normal again and I ended up going on the lash with friends - bad idea! Next day it was all happening again, only this time I couldn't breathe and my chest pain and heart-racing were through the roof.
6-7 weeks on, my quality of life has been very poor. But the last week or so, I've learned to accept my symptoms for what they are: just symptoms of anxiety. Nothing else. Sure, my heart flutters still the odd time and my chest hurts occasionally, but I continue on with my day when they happen as nothing happened.
It's almost like the symptoms are talking to each other saying, ''hey, he isn't afraid of us anymore, let's bounce''. That's the stage I'm at. I have setbacks as everyone does - so that's also not an issue much either, because I'm aware they're going to happen. So thanks to your channel and Doctor Harry Barry (check him out) - I can see the light. I'm headed toward it, but I'm not quite there yet. But one thing I do know is, I'll get there eventually. THANK YOU!

I'm in the same boat. I workout a lot and periodically, my workouts will make me more anxious when normally it's exercise that makes me feel calm and collected. I once drove to Walgreens during a panic attack to buy a blood sugar monitor. I had convinced myself that I was hypoglycemic. I tested my blood sugar in the parking lot while still hyperventilating and dizzy and... completely normal blood sugar. Adrenaline just causes some scary symptoms I guess.

@@chrisduncan3943 Absolutely my friend. Reading back at this comment from myself even, mqkes me sad. I'm 100% now and have never been better. Best shapecof my life. I get heart palpitations still the odd time but instead of freaking out I say "fuck it, it's just adrenaline".
How are you feeling now may I ask? Because, ultimately, given you've been given the all clear from a doctor, there only thoughts. That's it. All they are, are thoughts. Don't be worried. Keep working out. Releasing those endorphins are absolutely grear for your mind. Meditate at night in bed. Listen to waves crashing against the rocks. I still do. I'm out cold in 15mins when before I was an insomniac. Let me know how you are and I'll try to help.

@@michaelbradley2702 that is great that you've recovered. There is a phone app and a book called DARE that was a game changer for me. It even has a Harry Barry interview on the app, so it's that same type of acceptance of symptoms and paradoxically they go away. I had chronic upper back pain at one point, and it simply disappeared when my anxiety got better too. And all it took was to simply stop fighting the body sensations and let them happen. It was the resistance causing the anxiety and adrenaline surges. I still get them somewhat but I just let them happen and don't fight them and they quickly pass. I never would have believed at one point that the solution could be so simple and counterintuitive, but it absolutely was.

Not fighting what’s going on, while staying calm & not feeding it.

I work at a hospital. I was fine at first. Then I started having attacks. Chest pain. Led to worry now it’s full blown attacks. I get a nervous shakey feeling in solar plexus region and then my body over heats. And after the pains attack goes away I still have a burning sensation in my body plus I’m super shakey. Woke up shakey a couple times. Is that normal?

Your video is great. I have had severe anxiety and panic attacks for nearly 12 years. It's all started with losing my dad to cancer and two abusive marriages. I take medicine for it but I really want to get off the medication and take back my life. If u have any suggestions please let me know.

Alone with your explanations as into the origins of anxeity and
the mental work suggested by you people who suffering from
anxiety disorders with or without panic attacks can not heal period.
Physical symptoms associated with panic or anxeity disorders
require numerous methods of treatment . For those who healed
or those who are on advanced healing stage your material
    is very useful .
