    Yes these are affiliate links but they are the chains I used and as long as you don't go over 35 mph like I did they work perfect. if you go 60mph like I did, you see what happens. good luck out there and stay safe.

    I have seen mandatory chain up pull outs on some passes when it is bad for snow and you wouldn't believe the carnage after that. Chunks of chain all the way to the top litter the road and at the next stop when you can take them off, the chains have been wrapped around brake pods on semis, chains ripping off brake lines. All kinds of horror.
    I never go over 20 mph and I do check them shortly after installing them and running for a bit. They will loosen up and they will whip real hard the faster you go. They are also hard on the tires over time.

    Grab a set for your trailer as well
    Tail chains can really help co tr9l the trailer. Oh and always stop to retighten chains. Cheap chains stretch out.

    As another mentioned most know that under DOT rules/laws you must carry chains in Colorado, CA, WA, Nevada among other states. You went into Colorado without chains, as another mentioned one set on drive wheels and another set on the trailer axle. I get your learning as you go and I've been following since the start and you keep putting yourself in these situations. Trip planning would have nipped this in the bud as far as chains go. I do appreciate that you have the integrity to post your journey for all of us though. As you could have edited the video to make it look like pots of gold at the end of delivery.

  • @feral4217

    You were going either too fast for the chains or the chains got loose and the slack starting to rip your body apart. a good trick is once you put the chains on roll like 100 meters and then retighten them and then re check them every so often when you can. I learned the hard way too lol, thankfully it was on a military wrecker. I didn't check them before driving off and it ended up smacking into the air tank.

    From the video, that wasn’t a blizzard, just a snow storm. A blizzard has strong sustained winds of 35+ and low visibility for hours. When you see drifts piling up on the road even though it was recently plowed, and see snow blowing strongly across the road but unable to see much beyond that l, definitely in a blizzard.
    When the wind whips up (especially out on the plains) during a heavy snow it’s way worse. I’m guessing that I70 was probably closed at Limon for blizzard conditions but in the mountains it just looked like a regular snow storm.
    That said, driving I70 through the mountains in the winter is sketchy, especially when you have a trailer pushing you around/holding you back when climbing. Glad it all worked out!

    Chains are to be checked and retightened multiple times. There are times when you need them to get moving but at best opportunity stop and adjust them and do that often to ensure they are good to go. I have different size chains for different types of traction needed. I have modified big rig chains for severe weather regular pickup chains as well as passenger vehicle chains that have been made to fit my f450. In your situation the smaller chains would have worked well for the trip you made. The Buick rig ones are for the times that I must go no matter what.

    Stop strapping through the spokes of wheels on vehicles. Loop over the top of the tire. Keep the strap on the rubber where it does not touch any metal. A better option is to use a chain bridle with J and T hooks to connect to the axle or frame to lock it down on the back to chain and binder it or it could be used on the front. Strap on the front to the axle pulling forward and outward or crisscross. Another option on trucks with a receiver is to drop a pintle hook in the receiver and binder each side to it.
    As other's have said, "Too fast running chains". Driving in snow/ice sucks and I avoid it. It is hard on the equipment and hard on my nerves.

    • @Babylionhotshot
      @Babylionhotshot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hard on my nerves heard loud and clear! those are some hard miles. And as far as scraping cars and trucks down to my flat bed... it really isn't built as a car hauler and I don't feel comfortable starting over the tires. I atlas know if the straps come loose they are still around the tires.
      I have really been thinking about car hauling. have you done car hauling ever with a car hauling trailer? and if you did was it better money than flatbed? is it easier to get loads.

    Driving Way to fast with chains, and also, you’re supposed to have chains in Colorado since September 1st.. so driving without chains puts you in violation. Please.. educate yourself man. You’re doing this all wrong.

      Well have them now. and deffiniley will slow down with the Cains on next time. I was just worried about loosing momentum like I did when I didn't have the chains on going up the first time. But now I have a better feel for them. first time was rough next time hopefully will be better.

    • @Babylionhotshot
      @Babylionhotshot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ill have to look into what snow socks are. Im assuming they are smaller chains but cover a lot more of the tire. I think I saw them on some semi's while I was up there. And for sure I will slow down.

    • @Babylionhotshot
      @Babylionhotshot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was going way slower than the cars and sun's passing me. but yes I needed to slow down even more so and will do so next time im in those conditions. it just seemed like a lot going on and the 4 wheel drive slipped my mind.
