You just LOVE to talk about that "Poverty Line," but take a gander at the Cost of Living. Where I live, it is possible to live fairly comfortably in a suburban home with $36.4 K a year. This is WITH average debts like mortgages and car payments. Without those debts in low income neighborhoods, I wouldn't be surprised if many of your views fell flat on their face whimpering with emptying bladders. The way things are going, the "rich" states may have struggling citizens who live ABOVE the poverty line because that cost of living is insane. Bottom line: Stop cooking your facts like CNN. The household income means LITTLE if the cost of living is decent or low.
Facts are facts. When 25% of adults never graduated high school, 30% are making less than $15k a year, and you have a high crime rate it doesn’t matter what the cost of living is. I’ve lived in SC all my life and we have some nice places but half the state is a dump. And blame our crooked do nothing legislature.
@@MS-xh7cw: I live here, too. 1) A government that does nothing is the best kind because the government is like a gardener with a black thumb. Do you want such a person touching what they will only kill? I don't. 2) It does matter. Poverty mainly exists in areas with vastly disproportionate degrees of wealth. When you have poor people living in places that care more about the rich gated communities and the wealthy financial districts, you get hellholes like Detroit and Chicago. The cities look so great on the travel brochures, but you wouldn't want to live there. When the city you live in has a balanced amount of wealth, high or low, it's fine because the cost of living is affordable in comparison to the local wages. At that point, it becomes an existential question of "how much money do you really need?" In hellholes like Detroit and Chicago, no amount of money will ever be enough because they will NEVER be paid enough to live anywhere above a slum...unless they OWN some of the big business corporations in charge. These things DO matter, and most of that "Poverty Line" crap is decided by the idiots that screwed up Detroit and Chicago. They're like Sam Harris being called intelligent when he starts his argument off with a Think of the Children Appeal to Emotion. Clearly, those who think he's intelligent don't know what intelligence looks like.
People like to lie to themselves about reality when it doesn't match what they want to be true. It's a big part of the reason poverty is so high here and positive changes are unlikely.
@@FranktheHogRider Hilton Head Island is the best location in the state! I've lived here for the past 34 years. You gotta come see it......and Bluffton as well
There is poverty and crime in every single city or town in America. Love how you show the very worst of each city but skim over the beautiful parts. Bought a home in Georgetown last year and we absolutely love it.
Im surprised about all the crime mentioned. My wife and I travelled quite a few times through South Carolina, and we were blown away at how friendly everyone is. We have been all over the World, and i can honestly say the friendliest people have been in SC
This is definitely not true. I don’t understand how someone who’s not a South Carolinian can speak on our state. As Nikki Haley used to say, it’s a beautiful day in South Carolina.
As a representative of Gaffney I would like to thank you for this video. Yes, people, he is absolutely correct. SC is a horrible place to live and most of us would appreciate you choosing another state to move to. Nothing to see here…. Move along. 😐😬 I💜SC
I'm a current resident of 33 yrs living in SC .Surprised North Charleston, Orangeburg and Allendale is not in the top 3. I would take Georgetown and Myrtle Beach over those places.... I'm sure most residents here would agree
I went through Orangeburg and let me tell you. We went to 3 restaurants and all were awful. We nearly walked out of the Cracker Barrel. The service is horrid. And everyone always tells me how bad it is.
North Charleston has one of the highest crime rates. End up in the wrong place by accident, get shot. I live in Summerville and it's crazy how much that twenty minute drive changes the surroundings
You forgot Sumter and Orangeburg! But most of the towns you listed have died off due to either mills, textile industry and tobacco and cotton farming going to other countries. It is sad to see the older charming communities falling the way they have.
When I started watching, I told my son, “If Orangeburg isn’t in the top 5 on this list, it’s completely WRONG!” I went to school there from 4th-12th grades and it was really bad. There were 6 gangs in my high school and way too many people I went to school with died violent deaths, and I was almost shot twice even though I was a good kid. When I graduated, I moved away and have rarely visited the area. There’s no way I would’ve raised my kids there!
I grew up near several of the places on your list. These were once thriving, bustling communities. Union, Chester, Lancaster, and a bunch of others. Two big things happened. One is the interstate system. New businesses build along the interstates. I85 Charlotte-Spartanburg-Greenville, I77 Charlotte-Rock Hill-Columbia. Union and Chester are right in the middle of that big triangle. Too far from the interstates for new businesses to come there. When the cotton mills closed, that destroyed the economies of a huge part of the upstate. If the jobs aren't there, people have to leave to find jobs. The population goes down. It just draws everything into a negative spiral in terms of jobs, schools, everything.
I live in Chester, and while I probably wouldn't rate it higher than Myrtle Beach for violence like the guy in the video suggests, I can attest to the fact what you said is true.
Very fortunate to be born and raised in Hilton head South Carolina. Great appreciation for the state and country’s heritage. My grand mother whose over 80 was alive when there wasn’t even a bridge on the island.
New Yorkers, Chicagoans, Californians and idiots from New Jersey are presently destroying Hilton Head. That's what they do, they elect morons up there, then whine and move to SC and vote the same way. THEY move South....and then tell US that WE are backwoods hicks who don't know anything.......after they have destroyed their own states. "I'm moving to New Jersey for the weather and job opportunities" .......said NO South Carolinian EVER!
I think this list is not very accurate but let's be clear, most of the south east is being punished for the past. But even though we don't have the money that many places have, I'd rather pay 150 thousand for a house and an acre of land than 500 thousand to live in a box
You have a point. Here in Las Vegas, homes have definitely gone up but not to the insane numbers you will see when house hunting in southern California. Almost makes me want to move back to South Carolina.
90% of these problems plaguing South Carolina cities is due to globalization. If they would increase the demand for lumber and other agricultural products from the Carolinas and not shift our dollars to other nations to supply it for us, then the economy would pick up again.
@B Keene Live in Florence, inflation, like everywhere else in the world has only gotten worse. People aren’t going to work for cheap especially since a lot of people moved down here during the pandemic. I plan to leave this place as soon as I finish college.
Under the previous administration, in DC, Canada, from which lumber is imported began getting tariffed to protect US domestic production. Massive wild fires are destroying millions of acres of forest since environmentists stopped Forestry Management.
@@hannadeshler1426 Not possible. Baby Boomers from up North are moving down here. The cost of living is Much less than living in New York, or Connecticut. Can you blame them???
Globalization, oh yeah, U.S should get rid of it's more than 700 military bases around the world and ease up on intervening politically, economically and socially in virtually every country on earth. That would be a good start.

I grew up in Clinton. Where the tea is sweet and the “t” is silent :) I lived there until I graduated from high school and went to USC. My family still lives there. I have so many great memories of riding bikes around town with my friends and through Presbyterian College which has a beautiful campus. We would drive to Greenville to go to the mall or the movies on the weekend. The reality is not everyone can live in big cities.. many people live in small towns and work in larger cities. People are building houses in Clinton to commute to work in Greenville. All that to say, I’m thankful for where I grew up.
@@fxrsniper1 I agree that you shouldn't be quick to trash small towns just because they can't offer what larger cities have. There's no logic in that. I agree that PC is a beautiful, small private college. But Clinton as a town is pretty dismal. My hometown was as well, and I had good memories there. But that doesn't mean I'd recommend someone move there.

Absolutely. It’s always someone who is not from SC that don’t know all the good . They focus only on the bad to show. That’s everything! They whether show the bad, then good.
I think the outsourcing of jobs to other countries is what caused the problems that a lot of us towns are dealing with, not just South Carolina. As mentioned in this video when the mills were thriving all was good or at least a hell of a lot better than now.
Really? The 19th century mills should sustain folks in the 21st century? Maybe SC should bring back rice production and indigo. Nah, it’s long gone with the wind, so either be part of the tourist industry highlighting the absurdity of the cradle of the confederacy, or be a droid at Boeing, Volvo, or BMW. Cheap labor from the good folks who are poor but proud.
A textile mill job is better than no job. And shipping millions of jobs to China, Mexico and Indonesia created a huge mess all over this country. NAFTA was a terrible idea and the proximate cause of death of blue collar America.
Do something different. Everything changes, we aren’t driving model T’s anymore. Stop drinking beer and watching football, and learn something new. It’s all on the internet, can’t be any easier. Don’t be so lazy. Clean up yourself, your community, and stop blaming others.
Very interesting… I m a five yr resident of rural Dillon County. When I moved down here my sister was aghast as Dillon was rated the worst city in SC at the time. I’m surprised it wasn’t on this list. I’m also surprised to see Georgetown and Greenwood on the list. I have friends and/or family in both those areas and never have they complained about crime. I do think that a lot of the problems would be resolved - and would never have developed if the Walmart conglomerate hadn’t destroyed the small town businesses. It really is a shame. I am surrounded by five small towns that all lost so much when the Walmarts opened - as well as when all the businesses packed up and moved to China. Empty factories and vacant store fronts still stand.
I would disagree with that assessment. I believe to my core, this is a State issue; at best a local Mayor issue. The CORE issue here is Education & Jobs. The State is responsible for providing equal education to all. The local mayor are responsible for champion meduim to large scale companies to their market. With good jobs, the tax base will increase, that will cause the schools to improve, and the rate of crime will go down. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Just my 2 cents.
I spent every summer of my life in Dillon and yes, it seems like I am related to half of the county. Everything changed when Walmart opened. Life wasn’t perfect as evidenced by the neighborhood that is still called the Quarters, but it was home. I did something wrong one day and I think that every neighbor knew and and had something to say to me before I made it home. Sitting on the porch was so exciting. Everyone shopped on Main Street on Saturdays. Walmart opened and the stores on Main Street began to close. Then the public library was burned down; It used to be a big rambling house on Main Street. Près Obama visited JV Martin Junior High during his first campaign and the media ignored the big hole in the roof of the gym. You may remember that a student from JV Martin attended his first State of the Union address. I have good memories of Dillon, but it is proof of the enduring legacy of slavery.
As someone who lives in the upstate of South Carolina since 1986, this guy has no idea of the true reality of rural living. Lancaster County in the upstate of South Carolina has seen some of the highest influx of new residents in the country.
@@Journey2sanctification heard that...high influx from Northern cities to Van Wyck, lake Wylie, fort mill, Spartanburg, Rock hill areas all seeing high population growth
@@Journey2sanctification worked in Greenville for years (Saint Francis Downtown ER) , native to the upstate, it has seen tremendous growth the last few years. It’s unreal how busy it is nowadays when I drive up that way
Yeah but the upstate is way different..I am from Marlboro county and lived in Greenville for 8 years and I call it my home...I had to move from Bennettsville or would have ended up in prison or on drugs still..now in Huntsville Al which is booming
We moved from Mississippi to SC 20 years ago. We live about 10 miles south of Rock Hill. You barely mentioned Rock Hill. Rock Hill is growing a lot with several sports places and a college and so much more. We love it here! I suggest living out in the country and not in the cities. Some people like smaller quiet towns. If you need to go shopping, you can always go out of town or order it.
SC is not that bad. Ive walked around Detroit, Memphis, Baltimore, Philly etc and those places are bad. I grew up in East Wilson NC so I feel right at home when I go into an area they call the "hood" here in the Carolinas. When I want good home cooking or a winning scratch off lotto ticket the hood is where I go. Most folks there are just as friendly as they can be.
There are bad places everywhere and I do not think these towns in South Carolina compare to other places either. For the most part, South Carolina is good. I do not believe that Darlington should be number one on the list. Granted, this person making the video probably used statistics. I would much rather be in SC any day of the week than in some crime ridden city that is over-populated. There are good and bad characteristics for just about any place in any country, but you have to live there to be able to make an educated decision about how a town ranks.
He's not comparing these places in SC to the rest of the country, but within SC itself. I'm from around the Greenville area and like it for the most part, but I think he's right about the places he mentioned.
I've lived here for all 27 yrs of my life, got married here, had my kids here, my family is here. SC can be pretty fuq'd up but it's not as bad as other places in the country
Just for some context South Carolina was a large tobacco producing state. When the tobacco companies were sued and tobacco lost it's subsidies the trickle down effect from the loss of the annual "Cash crop" no only affected merchants but had ripple effect that you still see today. For an extra punch in the gut, the Clinton administration gave tax incentives for textile and other industries to move "Off shore" to take advantage of slave wages, again crippling the local economies.
Very true, especially in the lowcountry. Here in the Upstate, the textile crash you mentioned was the nail in the coffin. Almost every town, large and small, had a mill of some sort. When they all shut down and left, they left fast. People would show up to work to find the doors locked and management gone. Whole town populations were left unemployed. Things are starting to improve here in SC. With auto, tech, and import/distribution companies coming into the state in droves. As well as people from the north and midwest.
If only we could attribute sc's decline to just those events......the gov't could drop bailouts to each citizen right now and there would be no economic growth... aside from the crime statistics that came from the bail out money being used for drugs and weapons
@@poeticdarkness7483 Crime is linked to poverty. Help people out of poverty and there's less crime. It doesn't help anyone to let people who can't go to work because of covid starve.
I lived in georgetown for most of my life and if you ever complain about the smell of the paper mill to anyone local the universal reply is "that's the smell of money". There used to be a steel-mill that shutdown in the early 2000's that kind of flipped the economy there as well. But I definitely wouldn't consider it a bad place to live compared to N. Charleston, Orangeburg, or some sides of Columbia.
I came to SC temporarily. That was in 1985. This is the only place I have ever chosen to call home. I know many of the towns mentioned in this video and I am saddened by the myopic tone and full dismissal of the wonderful things that I see daily in the Upstate. I can't imagine living anywhere else.
Love that Greenwood is on the list! Please keep telling people to stay away. We are currently looking for a second home somewhere within an hour or so of Aiken/Augusta and Greenwood is currently the top choice. Let’s keep it that way by keeping people from flocking there.
I've been to Greenwood to visit my cousins who have lived there for years. It's a beautiful town. One of my cousins has been employed at Lander University there his whole adult life!
I have to disagree with you Sir on Hartsville . we moved here this past August and totally love this little town. great places to eat , lots to do if you want to explore parks and lakes . I think you just don't like small hometowns enough to actually explore and see what they really have . I'm so glad we moved here .
Yeah lot of ex slave owners. Go up a lil ways to towns like Ruby, Cheraw, etc.. ya know where they still have the old downtown historical locations where they put slaves to auction. Then checkout the low disparaged areas where they literally have people living "on the wrong side of the tracks". Lovely isn't it. Lovely like gentrification for the south ❤
Hey, I'm from Hartsville! Born and raised! I have to be honest...there's not a whole lot to do or job opportunities, but I keep hearing that the crime here is as bad as Chicago. We do have crime here---they call it "Killaville" for a reason----but as bad as Chicago? I find that hard to believe.
Always look at the schools and it tells you most of what you need to know. If school ratings are 3 or less, stay away. If schools rate at 4 or better, then you can look further. That is a general rule and exceptions exist.
If you don't do your own research you won't never really know yeah you might like what he has to say but I'm from the state of South Carolina I know you know we have crime rate killings all across America but if you're not from here you're not financially sick don't move here
I live in Greenville S.C. And as far back as the 1970’s it was always known as little New York City and Dodge City as far as crime goes. I’ve been here since the early 1960’s and our crime has gotten worse but that comes with a growing city. What I’m trying to say is all the new industries and people moving here from other states has taken away the nice smaller neighborhoods we use to have here in Greenville
Damn Nick, this literally hit home! You actually showed my home at the 12:51 mark. You were correct about your prices as it only cost $79,000 and remaining in Charlotte was not optional. Fun Fact... I was stabbed on that street in February.
@@NickJohnson We moved here in 2021 because the Charlotte housing market was ridiculous and unless you were an investor you were kinda screwed. I must admit the house looks a lot better now due to a new roof and siding on top of a complete interior remodel
Oh come on now. As a small business owner in Hartsville I have to say I love this town. No reason for unemployment to be so high, there is a for hire sign on every building. We also have Coker University and the Governor School of Sc. We have Sonoco paper company and the Duke energy power plant. Kalmia Gardens, Neptune Island waterpark, restraunts, breweries, boutiques. There is plenty to do. Crime is everywhere but dont act like people are being mugged left and right on the streets. That's just crazy. I invite you to actually come and spend some time in Hartsville instead of grabbing Google images. No disrespect though ❤
I lived in Hartsville sc. For eight years, hits OK to live there but mostly they don't hire too many blacks. Hardee's or a McDonald's or a Walmart stores.
Just bought my dream home in Darlington and even if some places don't look the best, the people are wonderful and love it here. Moved from Pompano Beach in South Florida maybe that's why we think we're in heaven here 😂
I live in Myrtle Beach SC and I love it! Originally from CT and I would NEVER move back there, every city has a bad area, nowadays it doesn't matter where you live people are literally getting away with murder.
Born & raised in SC (hence my name) & I can tell you that you missed the impoverished towns that should've been on this list. You named the popular towns. Go further south in SC & you'll definitely see. You were mostly upstate. This needs a do over.
Upstate people need a wake up call, especially the White ones. Down on the coast there is terrible poverty but the real shame is in the old "mill towns" listed here.
Downtown Georgetown is historic and gorgeous, it’s the other parts that are rough. And outside of Myrtle is pretty nice too (Conway / N Myrtle / Murrells Inlet etc)
Most cities have bad areas. Myrtle Beach has some terrific parts. Stay away from downtown after dark and don't move to the route 15 area and you'll be fine.
Without watching video 1st-Florence , Chester, Orangeburg, maybe N. Charleston, maybe York. When I lived there were the worst places I went to. Lancaster isn’t great either.
What a hit piece! I know these towns-have actually been to all but 2-and you show the absolute WORST of them. We live in a little house in the upstate and couldn’t be happier. Yes, many of these counties have seen better times, but the will to survive is incredible. You won’t find any nicer people. We’re proud of South Carolina, and always will be.
I’m from Charleston, but don’t live in SC anymore. Really unsure how North Charleston missed this list? Charleston/Mount Pleasant/Folly Beach/James Island/Summerville is beautiful, but very over populated, expensive, and not as “kind southern hospitable” as it once was. Ohio and New Yorkers have taken over. I’ll always say I’m from Charleston and call it “home”, but you couldn’t pay me to move back. Pretty disappointing what my city has become.
I have to agree with you. I wasn't born here, but I've lived here for 30 years, and it's widely known that North Charleston is sketchy. No offense to you, North Charleston is like any other big city, they have their bad spots and good spots. Hilton Head is awesome in my opinion. I hope u have a good day!
What is frustrating and depressing is that more and more places SUCK,......Either spend a fortune to live in a nice place.or,...cross your fingers everywhere else and hope for the best.
There are some gross exaggerations here. Georgetown does smell bad from the paper mill but it creates jobs, people are friendly, downtown is quaint and it's not expensive. Myrtle Beach is growing astronomically which tells you something. Here's a clue, if you need it, people aren't moving there in record numbers because it is undesirable. Quite the opposite.
The politicians in the south were all on the grift, wanting to "partner with any company doing business in their community" and get a percentage of the business in exchange for the political gifting them with tax breaks at the cost of the citizens of the community. I experienced this when my father, an executive of a very large international corporation had to negotiate with these local southern politicians. Everyone had their hand out, willing to sell their neighbors future for $1.
Just like the gas tax that was suppose to be for those municipalities who collected it but the majority of it went to Columbia and surrounding area. So they can make our capital pretty while my car gets wrecked.
The way for this nonsense to stop is for THE PEOPLE in that very community run for office. To every problem there is a solution. I love these rural towns. The people in these towns have more RESPECT for their fellow man. As a Certified BBQ person, every summer I visit these towns. I get MORE good morning, how are you doing, than I ever get in Summerville, Charleston, or North Chuck. Now Dillon has the opportunity to become the Jewel of the South. They are located on the border, the have the South of the Border site. The only devil is this plan would be most people would not be able to afford the expansion. Re: Taxes, homes, etc

I moved from California to SC in 2021. I been coming back and forth all of 2020 since California was mostly shut down. I thought I liked this place but it has it's fair share of problems. Mostly inconsiderate noisy neighbors, some people.are rude and most are bad drivers, jobs are hard to get into so I gave up on trying to get hired anywhere plus the only one that did take me paid $8 an hour and was part time which didnt help. I cant really walk anywhere here like I used to in California unless it's at a park or trail and I hate using a car to get around everywhere. I'm moving out of the USSA soon I dont even have friends or family here
Funny thing: I ended up buying a house in Lancaster because the housing market in Rock Hill freakin’ exploded to where Fort Mill used to be. And honestly, I don’t regret it.
I live in York, SC near the NC/SC line. I noticed immediately the mispronunciation of "Lancaster"......These are very small areas and there are places like this in every state. Small towns like this ARE poor as far as opportunities for employment, etc. Same scenario in every state many times over....
I'm in Ontario Canada. We did our second half of our honeymoon in Myrtle after driving from Georgia. Stopped in Charleston and Beaufort. Beaufort was great. Disappointed to hear about Myrtle but I did notice that poverty too when we drove outside of town. Super cheap groceries and beer though! Especially compared to here
Glad you got to see Charleston and Beaufort. Myrtle beach is complete trash. It's gotten really bad over the last 10 years or so. Used to just be a bunch of people from up north living there, but now has gotten really ghetto. Drugs, shootings, prostitution, etc. Charleston and Beaufort are beautiful

Fellow Carolinian here! I live in the general Myrtle area, but I will keep the exact spot private. Lancaster is pronounced here like "Lane-kisster!" In my experience, inland of Myrtle like Longs, Loris, and Conway are horrific. People I graduated school with have become murderers and are in gangs. People I grew up with were killed by their friends. North Charleston up to Summerville is filled with crime, too. North of Two Notch in Columbia is even worse and it's terrifying!

I've lived most of my life in SC, and Orangeburg definitely should have been on the list. I left there after I graduated from high school and you could not pay me to move back. I only stop in to eat BBQ. One common factor with several of these towns is they relied on the textile industry (especially Union, Abbeville, Greenwood, Hartsville). There are no mills left. Another factor is they were small farming communities and nobody wants to work on a farm now. Of course there is nothing to do in small towns. Jesus, you're lucky to have a grocery store.

I lived in Greenwood for 5 months. I went there for Rehab. In fact, there's A LOT of a much more "free spirited" versions of rehabilitation places than most cities rather than right there in Greenwood. It is a very big recovery centered place. A lot of people changed their lives there but there is the higher percentage that gets stuck there bc they want to leave rehab one night and go get high, get caught, get kicked out and now they're rummaging the streets of Greenwood. This all could be bc a lot of actively high addicts are a lot of lumps on a log there. However, I'm a singer and their New spring church is the most amazing one, most talented one I've ever attended! Greenwood has a lot more issues than just rehab going on now. Being a member of the recovering community I'd rank that near the bottom. Worse is a segment of the society that has grown to accept drug dealing and larceny as a way of life. But you've got that in every town and city today.
Thanks for this. I'm in SC and can definitely say there are some broken places. Always carry something, know that southern charm was for a reason, and the rest is just sadly circumstantial.

I watched this because my Mum and Dad lived in Cheraw, SC for a few years. We are an English family and loved being there, we visited Myrtle Beach and Charleston whilst there, of course. That was 30 years ago. It is sad to see crime and drugs spreading like a cancer, wherever you live in the world. We travelled widely because of the nature of my father’s career. My home town is Chester, England which is different in every way from Chester, SC except for… a creeping problem with drugs and crime. It is still one of the safest, nicest places to live in England but who knows how long that will last either. I hope we all see better times and better moral values return. Interesting video. As a radio personality here in Greenville, I was surprised by how many towns in the Upstate were in this video. The numbers about the average minimum wage and poverty line were shocking but I do see it. And the crime rate???? Well you see it on the news every day.
We're actually leaning toward moving to MB. Besides the obvious (tourism), are there any other reasons you'd advise us to think twice about moving to your area...if you don't mind sharing :)
@@MszEveryShot unless you're in a good neighborhood where you have security cameras, I wouldn't. You have to be gainfully employed or you'll starve. The homeless and crime rates are horrible and the police spend more time terrorizing visitors than they do helping the locals. On the flip side, if you can gain stable year round employment and have a stable lifestyle, it's amazing there!! Unlimited access to the beach, the fun, night vibe and tons of laughs at many, many restaurants.
I grew up in Hartsville , And it has its issues for sure. It also has the largest industry in the state called Sonoco Products. It has the HB Robinson nuclear facility, the governors school, Coker university it seems to have a thriving downtown shopping area. Byerly Park just to name some positives. It definitely has its fair share of crimes and poverty. But I’ll considered, it seems to be a decent place to live. I did enjoy your video. Thank you for sharing it.

I live in Spartanburg county. Actually in Greer which is 1/2 in Greenville and 1/2 in Spartanburg. I can vouch on what you have said. We all know it that travel in the state. I'd rather we kept our area a secrete. Downtown Greer is charming and downtown Greenville has become a big little town. The foothills are just beautiful and I'm so glad we found some land and live in the country. But only 15 minutes from so much more.
My parents live on Lake Greenwood, about 15 minutes outside of Greenwood proper. Greenwood definitely isn’t a wealthy town but has steadily been improving over the last 20 years. Of course, there’s the good parts and bad parts of town with some very bad areas and areas with $500k+ homes, even higher on the lake.
I loved living in 96 if you know where that is. Beautiful and historic town. Unfortunately things have gotten worse in recent years but it is still a nice place
I’m from Mullins, S. C. 50 miles north west of Myrtle Beach. I’ve lived all over the US and some other countries too. I’m back in Mullins after 20+ years elsewhere and I’m very happy. I’ve been places way way worse than the worst places he described in SC. Check this out and don’t forget it. It’s not the place it’s the people and that goes for anywhere.
I'm from the Mullins/Marion area too, and I currently live in Florence. With all the bad rep. Marion gets, I'm surprised it wasn't on the list. Marion's economy suffered tremendously after the plants/factories left. But I'm thinking Marion/Mullins is going to eventually bounce back. At the end of the day, it depends on the individual and their likes and dislikes. We all have different preferences, tastes, hobbies, etc. What's paradise to one person is hell on earth to another.
Originally from Lancaster, SC here. Most of us left and never looked back but go to visit. It's mostly older folks still there and everyone works mostly in Charlotte, 30 minute ride for most. But it could be a lot better. Once the big plants closed everything went downhill. Living in a place like this, you must make the best of it. Going to visit in August for a month. My kids love the freedom to run around in the lush grass for summer visit, since we live in Abu Dhabi, UAE. I love my home town!
Abbeville is not so bad. I live in a small town outside of Abbeville. Sure, it is a small town with not a lot going on sometimes just like my hometown but I’d rather live somewhere quiet than so loud you can’t even hear yourself think. It really depends on what you need as a person. Every place has its problems and things could be better everywhere. Ps. the Spring Festival is great 😌
I live near Ware Shoals, part of which is in Abbeville Co. Ware Shoals makes Abbeville look like Hilton Head. Even the people from Honea Path stay away.
Nick - I'm in Lancaster and you're spot on about 1) not much to do here and 2) Cookout is a "big" deal here to a lot of folks. I'm in the 'burbs and my family loves it, but there are some seedy neighborhoods too.
I have a house paid for in Lancaster. It's not all that true. Well he is on the crime part. However 🤔 if you take into account Indian land is not so bad. There are jobs there. Afterwards you going to rockhill or Charlotte
As a resident of Myrtle beach I can tell you property crime is terrible. We have been dealing with car break ins for over a year in our neighborhood and no one has been arrested
I've lived in several of these places. I wish I could get here and dispute, well, anything negative but I just can't. You're spot on. My firstborn arrived in Florence in 1992, when we lived in Darlington. I went to St John's High, before it and Mayo merged into Darlington High. I have some happy memories from high school until I was essentially forced out for being pregnant (this was in 1992). My closest high school friend still resides there and tells me how awful the town has become, how dangerous. As for Georgetown, it will forever be home. I grew up on the far side of town, in Green Acres trailer park. I went to school there, I was baptized there, and I got the hell out of there as soon as I possibly could. I have a love/hate relationship with Georgetown, South Carolina. But you couldn't pay me to raise my own kids there. It's stuck. I see no real progress there and I visit family at least once every couple of years.

I worked in Lancaster for a little while. I'm not from there. But from I heard, Lancaster had a lot of people employed at Springs Mill. From late 1800s until early 2000s that place employed a lot of people. The Springs Mill company even had a company funded park there called Springs Park. Apparently used to be booming in like the 1950s.

I agree. Lancaster was hit hard when Springs Mill outsourced to India. These were not 19th century mills!

So true
I live in Greenwood I absolutely love it
I would disagree with that assessment.
Dillon county yes Lord better be on your squares for sho.
As someone who lives in the upstate of South Carolina since 1986, this guy has no idea of the true reality of rural living. Lancaster County in the upstate of South Carolina has seen some of the highest influx of new residents in the country.
Same for Greenville

We moved from Mississippi to SC 20 years ago. We live about 10 miles south of Rock Hill. You barely mentioned Rock Hill. Rock Hill is growing a lot with several sports places and a college and so much more. We love it here! I suggest living out in the country and not in the cities. Some people like smaller quiet towns. If you need to go shopping, you can always go out of town or order it.
Um Kingstree..,
@@robindeera8060 IKR? Don't know how they dodged the bullet on this list!
I agree I love the Carolinas
@@NickJohnson yes we are blessed here!
I just moved to Lexington SC from Boston mass and I luv it here..the health insurance here sucks tho..absolutely the worst
WHAT ABOUT
I lived in georgetown for most of my life and if you ever complain about the smell of the paper mill to anyone local the universal reply is "that's the smell of money".

I have to disagree with you Sir on Hartsville . we moved here this past August and totally love this little town. great places to eat , lots to do if you want to explore parks and lakes .
I can't believe sites like Realtor, Redfin and Zillow won't show crime statistics. Insane. At least there channels that help us out like this one.
Well nobody wants to live in a place with high crime
THEY USE TOO, they literally took the feature away
Always look at the schools and it tells you most of what you need to know. If school ratings are 3 or less, stay away. If schools rate at 4 or better, then you can look further. That is a general rule and exceptions exist.

That is the wealth divide that more and more defines the US.
True. And you can tell that many of those places USED to be nice. Now they are deteriorating due to lack of jobs and poverty.

You are telling the entire TRUTH! This is hideous for our community.
That has nothing to do with where politicians are located. That is what all politicians do. North, South, East or West.
Just like the gas tax that was suppose to be for those municipalities who collected it but the majority of it went to Columbia and surrounding area. So they can make our capital pretty while my car gets wrecked.
Look at what happened with the new nuclear power plant that closed. Plenty of grift found in that scheme.

It has its pros and cons but mostly, it'd make me very depressed just to simply pass through there bc often, the girls I met have passed away due to their choice in going back out there and getting high at the wrong place and the wrong time and losing their life.
You mean killerville
Did Columbia make any of your list? I'm new to the channel. I'll lived in Columbia for going on two years now and I must say it's definitely a breath of fresh air compared to Chicago.
We moved to Columbia, SC from Colorado almost 2years now, bought our house unseen and we love it! It's so quiet and have almost everything are near like: Church, hospital, restaurants, groceries, etc.
Fun fact, Sleeping with the Enemy was filmed in Abbyville. It was the small college town she moved to
That's my favorite movie bc Julia Roberts is my favorite actress. I'm going to check that place out.
I thought she moved to a mid western town🤔
@@kenyettaready in the movie yes. But the actual filming location was SC. Just like Ozark is filmed here on a lake outside Atlanta vs in the actual Ozarks.
@@patrickhumm there's a cool movie with Vince Vaughan called Arkansas. Many scenes were filmed in Baldwin County, AL. Not Arkansas.I recognize too many landmark buildings in that movie LoL.
The fact you can't spell AbbEville correctly makes this a little sus
Nick, you completely forgot to mention the occasional hurricanes. We forgive you this time.
I’m from Beaufort South Carolina I wish I was still there? I miss the warm weather better food and friendly people.
As a SC resident I can easily say that the outsourcing of jobs and the opioid crisis has crippled many regions of my home state. This is especially true in the upstate and by the Georgia line.
Mtn rest? Walhalla?
No better in the midlands or the lowcountry
I lived in Columbia for 4 years and when I moved to Charlotte, NC, I felt it is crowded and Columbia still gives a small town charm..
I grew up in Columbia. It’s a very dangerous place
@@brianbarwick908 No, it’s not now sir.. Ironically my insurance agent name was also Barwick.. I’m not American and a brown person too but lived there for 4 years peacefully.. I still love that place since I landed there first in America so that attachment is still inside me.
I've been a sc resident for 24 years (sense birth) I can 1000% say I'm currently trying to move out of south Carolina
I am from Rock Hill South Carolina and I love it we go back to Rock Hill often. We have such a good time in South Carolina. My mom purchased two houses in South Carolina in Rock Hill South Carolina. My mother lives by the river and it's a beautiful neighborhood I don't know if Rock Hill has a ghetto I don't know I've never been to it if they do have it but what I really want to say is I love me some South Carolina and wouldn't change it for nothing in the world.
I LOVE GREER!!
That money BMW pours into the area makes all the differance
My parents live on Lake Greenwood, about 15 minutes outside of Greenwood proper. Greenwood definitely isn’t a wealthy town but has steadily been improving over the last 20 years. Of course, there’s the good parts and bad parts of town with some very bad areas and areas with $500k+ homes, even higher on the lake.
I loved living in 96 if you know where that is. Beautiful and historic town. Unfortunately things have gotten worse in recent years but it is still a nice place
I love greenwood and 96, the people and culture is very laid back and refreshing. True old southern towns with a lot of heart
My daughter went to Lander and she said parts of the town was bad!
I am waiting to see this one on here! That's where I grew up
@@rjmac3001 yes!! The accent that come from 96 is the best
I lived in marion for 3 years.. wasn't the best but ot the worst
I’m from Rains myself and it’s definitely not the WORST, that’s for sure!
@@hartleyb8356 Ikr. If it’s so bad where all these people comin from?
I'm from the Mullins/Marion area too, and I currently live in Florence. With all the bad rep. Marion gets, I'm surprised it wasn't on the list. Marion's economy suffered tremendously after the plants/factories left. But I'm thinking Marion/Mullins is going to eventually bounce back. At the end of the day, it depends on the individual and their likes and dislikes. We all have different preferences, tastes, hobbies, etc. What's paradise to one person is hell on earth to another.
@@bernadettejohnson2390 That’s all so true in my opinion those people who can do well in any surroundings are the real survivors.
Very beautiful!
I am guessing the big Rayovac plant is gone. I knew it when Lancaster made the list, wrong as this list is.
Ps. the Spring Festival is great 😌
Cool. I live in Honea Path. A small town in Abbeville. I love it here and it's very quiet.
I have worked my whole life and I like having nothing to do what’s that like 😊
Retirement soon I guess I’ll find out 😊
I live near Ware Shoals, part of which is in Abbeville Co. Ware Shoals makes Abbeville look like Hilton Head. Even the people from Honea Path stay away.
Myrtle Beach was a nice place back in the mid 1970’s, my family used to vacation there.
He forgot Euatawville,Holly hill,North Charleston, Sumter and areas in Columbia South Carolina.
So right.
and what about podunk towns like Ridgeland, Hampton, Gaston...I have lived in SC my entire life, and I think this list is off
I agree with you saying Sumter 😂
It's spelled Eutawville. Orangeburg County is rough.
Bruh Columbia is bad! Random shootings…
As someone who lives in SC, don't.
Nick - I'm in Lancaster and you're spot on about 1) not much to do here and 2) Cookout is a "big" deal here to a lot of folks. I'm in the 'burbs and my family loves it, but there are some seedy neighborhoods too.
Seedy neighbors are everywhere…not just there.
Right..im in chester, about the same way here
I'm in Lancaster too I live in one of those seedy neighborhoods it's nothing to do here you're absolutely right
I have a house paid for in Lancaster. It's not all that true. Well he is on the crime part. However 🤔 if you take into account Indian land is not so bad. There are jobs there. Afterwards you going to rockhill or Charlotte
Maybe in his next video he'll figure out that Lancaster is one word.
As a resident of Myrtle beach I can tell you property crime is terrible. We have been dealing with car break ins for over a year in our neighborhood and no one has been arrested
That's what they voted for. Fjb.
If you ever leave SC don't come to new York. It sucks just as much here plus it's cold
@@renroxhrdlol... as bad as goosecreek was...i doubt anyone would actually choose to live in ny
I'm in Florence...been here for five years! Not bad at all
@@troyspencer3996 I met a really nice lady from there in a West Ashley Care center. She had to move and sell her home 🏠 to live there. When you grow up in a place no matter what it will always be Home. If you where born in a small town I say treasure that. You have a treasure your not aware of. Sound Carolina is full of small town place as well as good people with lots of stories. I always love to get the history of a place when I move there. We're moving so fast any more where forgetting
to stop and smell the roses. I for the life of me don't know what people want anymore. Most have much more than their grandparents and don't seem to be happy or satisfied. Theres no sense of community. We're losing the real meaning and purpose of life.
Troy Spencer I’m from Florence but I now live in Nashville. Florence is t that. d but it got old because I was there my whole life.
I want to watch Nick's videos every day.......but that's impossible!🎵
You could watch one a day for two years and never see the same one!
@@NickJohnson every theme music of topics were hilarious 🤣😂
@@NickJohnson I just may!
I lived in Greenwood for two years and was SHOOK when I saw it on this list!!! Honestly I didn’t even think you’d know where it was!! I love your videos and I think I’m honestly just super excited to see a smaller town I actually lived in and am familiar with in one of your videos! I been watching for a while in hopes! Anyways…yeah..South Carolina is….South Carolina. That’s the only way I can describe it. Have you visited McCormick & Mount Carmel? They’re way smaller than Abbeville but the people are so sweet and both towns have amazing restaurants! Highly recommend if you decide to come back on day. 😉
*one not on
Calhoun Falls, Ninety Six, Due West etc.
What about Parksville SC..I Luv that place
Luv McCormick SC...Grew Up There

Hey, Watching this and I live in Lancaster, and have all my 58 yrs of life, wish I had the BALLS to leave, but your right IT SUCK!
What did you find wrong about it and if it’s so bad, then why didn’t you leave.
Sir, those type of towns are everywhere not just there.
I see people offended in the comments. I’m 47. Born & raised here. This list isn’t his opinion. It’s FACTUAL DATA. It’s quite an accurate list. I lived in several of these places over time. If you’re passing through on a trip or in one of these towns for a festival, you’ll probably experience nice people & have a good time… BUT DO NOT MOVE THERE. Never leave ANY door unlocked when pumping gas. Don’t leave ANYTHING of value in your car. Don’t sit in your car, get out or drive off. If you are shopping alone do not use the key fob to unlock ur doors when ur done. Put ur purchases in the trunk & open your door with a key.
I've lived in Inman, Spartanburg, boiling springs and columbia and out of those inman was my favorite. Small town very rural. Quiet and country.
I have a friend who owns a mill house in Inman, close to the remainder of the mill. Quiet, no one bothers anyone, though the houses are showing their age. I own a house in Spartanburg, been in it for 4 years now (lived in Spartanburg up until I was 13 also), and not bad honestly, though people's driving is atrocious lol
@@pauldehayes1898 The poor driving is the whole state. Only place I have been where everyone will pull over for a hearse, but not an ambulance. Among a slew of other 'quirks.'
I live in Greenwood and it’s really not that bad. I own my own business and am successful. Most crime in the city is in the run down parts of town, but what town doesn’t have a bad part. But overall it is a beautiful town and has grown significantly since I moved here in 1990 from Baltimore.
